Drift Day

Believe it or not, I got acquainted with the driving technique called drifting when I was still playing Need for Speed. Then came the 3rd installment of the Fast and the Furious movie series: Tokyo Drift. I got so fascinated with it. I've always toyed with the idea of what it felt like to drift. Hahaha but I don't think I have enough guts yet so when I heard the familiar squeal of tires on the pavement while trying to find parking at Greenhills last month, I was ecstatic! Finally, I got to see and smell burning rubber up close.

It was the Glade Sport Lateral Drift Championship held at the open parking near Promenade Greenhills Shopping Center. First, what is drifting anyway? Drifting was popularized in Japan by Kunimitsu Takahashi. Drifting in a nutshell is purposely letting your car go into oversteer where your rear wheels lose traction during turns, the front wheels are pointing in the opposite direction of the turn.

I didn't stay long enough to see who won the championship because it was getting dark by the time they got through the semi-finalists. There were pretty good drivers there and I was so amazed when a pick-up truck lined to the competitor line. That one I had to see. I'm posting the video here so that you can see for yourself. I was only using my phone camera at that time, so forgive the resolution.
