Blog Action Day 2009: Climate Change

Climate change, we've heard the warnings from foremost environmentalists and climatologists all over the world. I'm sure you've read articles on how it is drastically shaping the conditions of the weather on earth. And yet have we really developed an understanding of its consequences?

The recent superstorms that ravaged our country namely Ondoy and Pepeng will go down in history as the most devastating calamities that struck our country in decades. I would like to treat them as wake up calls. We've seen the wreck that they left and we've cried tears of compassion over the lives and properties lost.

A call for action
3992612044_5a154d68a2 Although unwillingly, the tragedies are forcing us to rebuild. It's now high time for those in power to be able to make a significant change. Even more so, it is also a call for the everyday Filipino to each make a contribution for a better future. Climate change has many factors and most of it have been happening for decades now and at an accelerated speed, it is time to accept the fact that it is inevitable. The most important thing now is what we can do about it. It is time to become more environmentally aware and take a stand.

There is always a path to urban progress without sacrificing nature. That's why there is a revolution with Green Architecture and Green Building materials which I hope our government and design community will adapt. Urban planners know how to efficiently design cities to avoid disasters like these with always a fail-safe system, maybe it's time our government listened to them. And of course, for those in power, set aside greed and personal gain when it comes to the budget allotment for these projects. If all the red tape on these dealings were cut off, we would have fared better during these storms.

And so I contribute my voice for a call for action for climate change along with all the Filipino bloggers. Let's open our hearts and minds, and spread the word. We can accomplish a task no matter how daunting as long as we stand united.

The problem is the government is not too quickly or too early to plan ahead. After the consequence and a lot of lives lost, that's when action happens which is disappointing.

That's why there are private sectors, who are willing to take action instead.

We will never learn. Sigh.
