I read this book over the weekend and I was surprised at how different the movie adaptation was from the book. It was an entirely different plot and although most of the primary characters were there, they were depicted differently in the movie.
First off, Rebecca Bloomwood was already working for Successful Savings as a finance journalist but not directly under Luke Brandon. In the movie, the first exciting plot sequence was the moment she was being interviewed by Luke Brandon as a journalist for Successful Savings as Rebecca's stepping stone to Alette magazine. Here in the book though, she kept trying to find jobs that would earn her extra money for her already accumulated credit card debt. These offered the sense of humor and hilarity to the whole reading experience.
The chapters were almost always forewarded by debt collection letters from various credit card companies showing responses to various excuses that Rebecca came up with to delay paying.
Luke Brandon in the book was already established with his own PR company named Brandon Communications. He was portrayed as a brilliant genius with a photographic memory close to what he was in the movie. I think the romance that played out with Rebecca and Luke was told more nicely in the book.
In the movie Derek Smeath was a relentless debt collector who came across as an irritating character, in the book he wasn't made out into such, he was an understanding family man who was just doing his job.
All in all, I think I like the movie more because it had more drama and funny moments. It was a little toned down in the book and at times it was too tame instead of being bubbly fun.
