Barely two weeks after Ondoy, power outages have plagued the Metro. These scheduled "brown outs" are causing some major frustrations here and there, me included. So what do I do when the power is out?
To date, I have three magazine subscriptions and I must admit due to the craziness of my schedule, my desk is piled up with unopened magazine issues. So during the other night's brown out I found myself opening them one by one and actually reading through them. I read them when there's enough light using the rechargeable lamp, don't read when the light is too dim, you might destroy your eyesight. Take it from me, I've learned my lesson.
Flip open a novel.
If you like to buy books like me, there's probably several books that you've bought that you haven't read that's sitting on the bookshelf (then again, it might just be me). If you don't fancy reading a magazine, then reading a novel could be the next best option. You can just count the hours away engrossed in a really engaging thriller or getting teary-eyed over a romance novel. I'm reading through the first book of the Twilight series and I must admit, it's getting pretty hard to put it down.
Play a handheld console.
Play, play, play! If you have a PSP or a DS, time to get busy doing quests or fighting a level Boss. Hopefully your unit is fully charged though.
If my gadgets don't have enough juice in them for me to play with, board games are the next fun thing to do. It will be fun to engage the whole family in this as well. You get to have fun and bond at the same time. Hmmm, now this makes me want to pay a visit to Hobbes and check out the new board games that they have.
Gab on the phone.
Another next best alternative. Vent out your frustrations or catch up with an old friend. I usually do this when I've exhausted all of the things above or when I get an unexpected phone call which is always nice.
Take refuge at a coffeeshop.
When it's not too late, I'll just go ahead and grab my laptop to go to a coffeeshop especially when I have a deadline to finish. For this year, I find that buying a laptop was a pretty good investment. I no longer have to stress about making my deadline whenever there's a power outage.
How about you? How do you ease boredom when the power is out?
