Ondoy's Aftermath

Monday, September 28, 2009 0 Comments

After being hit by Tropical Storm Ondoy, Filipinos stand united. Last weekend was a nightmare. Our house suffered a little flooding in the backyard but that was nothing compared to the other areas that got really covered by floodwaters up to the roofs of their homes. We got lucky. Others were unfortunate. But through this, 2 days after, rescue and relief operations are still being conducted by various personalities, companies and organizations. We cannot just sit and do nothing. Do your part. The easiest way is being able to donate to the Philippine Red Cross via SMS.

Monday, September 28, 2009 0 Comments

bad-300-250 This global event will take place on October 15, 2009. For this year, the topic is Climate change. One day. One issue. Thousands of voices.

Here's how to join:

Here's a clip about this year's topic from the Blog Action Day homepage.

Climate change affects us all and it threatens more than the environment. It threatens to cause famine, flooding, war, and millions of refugees.

Given the urgency of the issue of climate change and the upcoming international climate negotiations in Copenhagen this December, we think the blogosphere has the unique opportunity to mobilize millions of people around expressing support for finding a sustainable solution to the climate crisis.

Why I love Windows Live Writer

Monday, September 28, 2009 6 Comments

WLW 7 I've tried several blogging clients before and when I got to use Windows Live Writer for the first time, I never turned to another client ever again. It had everything that I needed and more. Here are some of the reasons why I love using it to suite my blogging needs.

WLW 1 What's so unique about is, is that it provides me a preview of my blog template so I know exactly what my blogpost will look like even before I post it. I could see if my pictures are all aligned with the blog template or if they're a little off-margin. You also have the option to view the source code of your post if you want to do a little tweaking. The interface is styled like a normal word processor but much more specially tuned for blogging. You can choose the color theme template of WLW according to your taste. There's no limit to the number of blogs you can associate Writer with. Just follow the wizard in setting up your blog and Writer will automatically detect your blog settings and you have the option to allow automatic log-in.

Picture Formatting

Another thing that I love about the writer is the picture formatting options. You can choose to have several effects to add some pizzas to the pictures in your post. My favorite by far is the photopaper and drop shadow effect. You can also crop the pictures within Writer itself and even put a watermark. Sometimes cropping can become tricky though because the pictures can get re-sized with a very odd ratio, making them somewhat distorted. I think this is the bug that the developers have to fix.

You can also download several plug-ins to use with Writer. This makes posting so much more interesting. Here's an overview of the ones I have so far. Word Count is a plug-in that provides me the word count in my post, this is useful especially if I have to post something worth 100 words or more. I use Cool Emotion to add cute little emoticons in my posts. They have 13 pages of emoticon styles to choose from, some are animated and some are not. This is not really necessary but I find it's nice to jazz up the posts. Another is the Digg plug-in. This is for my users who have Digg accounts. You can browse hundreds of user-generated plug-ins at the Window Live Gallery download page. Be careful though, make sure to read user-reviews first before installing them. Sometimes some of the plug-ins have already been incorporated into the latest version or isn't compatible anymore.

Tags and Categories

You can also automatically add tags and categories into your posts that will automatically be synced to your blog settings. You can check any number of categories for your posts to be filed into.

Scheduled Posts & Editing

The little drop down calendar button at the bottom left corner lets you input what time and on what date your post will be published. For quick editing, you can choose to open and retrieve posts from your blog from within Writer itself. It preserves the original formatting you did before, which saves you a lot of time. I found it especially irritating if I used Blogspot's post editor and some of the post margins have been re-aligned. Writer eliminates this problem.

Try my hand out with music? Why not?

Saturday, September 26, 2009 , 0 Comments

1359865966_084c84cbca During a christening that I attended a few months back. I was sitting with a bunch of my girlfriends from my old highschool talking about how we were back then and how we are now. My talent has always lied in the artsy side, visual arts. Then one of my friends blurted out that she wanted to learn how to play the guitar and I immediately answered "me too!!!" We laughed. I have a really good classic guitar here at home and sadly no one is playing it. I've been wanting to try my hand with musical instruments for the longest time but just didn't have the proper time to do it. Been so caught up with so much happenings lately and I've forgotten about this. Maybe now is the time to slow down.

My sister used to have keyboard lessons here at home but she grew tired of it so I decided to continue with the instructor since we already paid in full. So there, I used to play the keyboards before but it's been a long time since I've played. At least I have some sort of background with music. Now back with learning to play the guitar, I really want to do this. I've already inquired for some lessons but I'm trying to coerce a friend into teaching me instead. I really hope he would, just for at least an hour or two once a week. *crossing my fingers*

Hmmm, now that I'm on a roll here, if there were other musical instruments I could play, I would choose to play the drums! Find some outlet for some of my crazy beats hehe. I would have to have a separate music room for that. Maybe when I already have my own place.

Trying out Yahoo Messenger 10 beta

Saturday, September 26, 2009 , 1 Comments

I've been a user of Yahoo Messenger 9 for months now and I loved the look, the feel and I've gotten used to most of its features but now since the release of YM 10, I'm starting to like the new version more. At first look, it doesn't differ much from YM 9 except for a few minor design tweaks. Upon signing in, you'll immediately see an option to choose the language you'll want your messenger to be in. I think this is the first thing that you'll notice with YM 10.

There's a new Yahoo Insider button at the bottom right of the menu bar. I've set my settings to default so that the Yahoo insider won't show as soon as I log in but for some users this is the first thing that they see. They've vamped it up as well. It now includes your Yahoo Mail, news, weather and Yahoo search.

16One more thing to notice is the new tabs for your contacts and Yahoo Updates. If you click the Yahoo Updates tab, you'll see all the updates from your contact list in order of recent activity.

You now have the option to directly click on an update and it automatically shows on the IM chat window of your friend so that he/she will know that you're commenting on his update.

You can also manage what kind of updates that you want to show up on the tab and whose updates you want to show.3

You can now also get alerted by a "toast" popup window on the bottom left side of your taskbar everytime a contact makes a status update. You can disable this anytime in the preferences menu.

There are also new icons in the IM window. There are now specific buttons for video and voice calls plus an activity button with options to interact with your friends.

4 For the activity button, I find the Scribbler will be very useful. It's much like the old Imenvironment that they had before where you can doodle stuff.

The major redesign that they did, although I haven't tried it out yet was for the video calls. I found out through the YM10 blog that you can now make a HQ video call with synched audio. Additional features include swapping video windows, positioning the windows side by side, muting the call and placing it on hold. The only catch is, your friend has to have YM10 also.

The reason for few updates

Friday, September 25, 2009 1 Comments

I want to extend my apologies to my readers, I’ve been having trouble with my internet provider at home for days now. No internet connection at home means I couldn’t get my blogposts out. Bummer! Given the delicate condition of my health now, I’m also taking the time to take it easy and rest while I can. I will try to update as much as I can when I can. I really hope they get my internet connection fixed soon. *crossing my fingers*

Red Ribbon's Newest cake: White Forest

Tuesday, September 22, 2009 , 1 Comments

IMG_0637 I highly recommend this new cake by Red Ribbon to white chocolate lovers. Thanks to Jonel Uy of Nomnomclub and Let'sGoSago.net for the exclusive bloggers invite to this event. The White Forest took its inspiration from the Black Forest, hence the namesake. The new cake is made of white chiffon and creamy white chocolate layered with real cherry bits and a fusion of cream and white chocolate flakes. The cake is topped with cream rosettes and juicy red maraschino cherries. I'm a dark chocolate lover myself but once I got a taste of this cake, I'm an instant fan. Trust me, you'd have to try it and see for yourself why we're raving about it. Go visit your nearest Red Ribbon branch today.

Food poisoning is such a harrowing experience

Tuesday, September 22, 2009 0 Comments

I suffered food poisoning a few weeks back. See the title above? I can't state it with more than enough apostrophes! It was really awful and I had it right when I was on vacation. Talk about bad timing. I had eaten oysters the night before at Oysterboy Metrowalk. The oysters that I had wasn't even fresh oysters, it was baked. But still I got food poisoned. One of my friends was a new mom and she couldn't breast feed while she was on antibiotics.

Food poisoning occurs when you eat food contaminated by bacteria or other toxins. In my case, the oysters must've been not prepared well when it was cooked. The symptoms usually appear 12-72 hours upon eating the contaminated food. These include: nausea vomiting, abdominal cramping, diarrhea, head or muscle aches and fever. Except for the fever part, I endured all of those symptoms during the first two days of my vacation. Trust me, it's one experience I don't want to ever go through again. Plus I've sworn off eating oysters for good.

What you should do:

  • Drink plenty of fluids to replace the electrolytes in your body and to prevent dehydration.
  • Avoid solid for a while but increase clear liquids.
  • Go to the nearest clinic and have yourself treated with the right antibiotics.
  • Although not proven, it was suggested to eat yogurt and red wine to neutralize the bacteria in your stomach.

They're Back! A look at SATC 2

Tuesday, September 22, 2009 0 Comments

SPL122205_001 Following the success of the first movie, the entire original cast and crew have started filming in New York City for the sequel: Sex and the City 2.

As clipped from the official press release:

Returning in their starring roles as the four great friends are Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon. “It’s a great privilege to be spending time again with this beloved cast and crew and to be filming in New York City,” says Parker. “We look forward to the next few months of this adventure.”

Of course, where would these women be without their men? Also back for the much-anticipated sequel are Chris Noth as Mr. Big, David Eigenberg as Steve, Evan Handler as Harry, Jason Lewis as Smith, Mario Cantone as Anthony and Willie Garson as Stanford Blatch.

“Sex and the City 2” also reunites the original creative team from the series and the first feature. Michael Patrick King is once again directing from his own screenplay. States King, “We are thrilled to have the luxury to continue to tell the story of these four iconic women characters: Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha. We will do our best to entertain the loyal fans who were so supportive of the first movie.”

King is also producing with John Melfi, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Darren Star. The executive producers are Toby Emmerich, Richard Brener and Marcus Viscidi. Also returning will be director of photography John Thomas, production designer Jeremy Conway, composer Aaron Zigman and costume designer Patricia Field.

Set to be released in theaters June next year, “Sex and the City 2” is the follow-up to the first film, which pulled in more than $415 million worldwide. The original film was inspired by the phenomenally popular, award-winning HBO series based on the writings of Candace Bushnell.

The majority of filming will take place in and around the city of New York.

New Line Cinema presents “Sex and the City 2.” The film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Unique Nesting Dolls

Saturday, September 19, 2009 0 Comments

I'm sure you've seen them, whether on print or on TV. A nesting doll is more correctly termed as a Matryoshka doll or a Russian nested doll. They are a set of dolls of decreasing sizes placed one inside the other. They originated from Russia. The shape is always the same, kinda like a bowling pin but stockier and shorter. The design of the nesting dolls has come a long way since it's traditional counterparts, here are some of the quirky designs I've found.

But first here's what a traditional Matryoshka doll looks like:

Free is not always worth it

Wednesday, September 16, 2009 , 0 Comments

I'm sure you've seen various ads popping out as windows or as banners all over the web, offering free business cards , be wary of these offers. Always ask yourself, what's the catch? Why is it free? Often the word "free" has been used countless of times to attract consumers but not in the truest sense of the products being free.

In this case, the cards offered for free might have limited designs, or the company logo splattered all over. Of course, your business card is supposed to carry your identity and not theirs. In exchange for the cards being printed free, they advertise their company on your card as well. They might also be charging sky-rocketing shipping rates.

Why not choose to pay a significantly less amount instead and get the quality and design that you were looking for? Save yourself the hassle. Have the freedom to choose the design that you want and the authority to choose which layout you think is best for you. For just $1.99 (plus S&H) at 123Print, you'll get 30 high quality, full-color business cards and you can upgrade to 100 cards for only $3.95.

Here are some of the card designs that I liked.
