I was watching The Happening the other night and Mark Wahlberg's character mentioned something about mood rings and it got me curious on how they work. After a little research, here's what I found out.
Mood rings became all the rage in the 1970s but still come back every now and then as a fad. The stone set in the ring is supposedly able to show your mood when it changes its color. The stone is not actually a stone but a hollow glass shell filled with thermotropic liquid crystals, they react to the subtle changes in temperature of our body. The change in temperature causes the crystals to twist in different ways and directions that causes it to absorb a different wave in the color spectrum. Thus reflecting the "mood" color that your body projects.
Here's the color range according to temperature and the corresponding mood it suggests:
- Dark blue: Happy, romantic or passionate
- Blue: Calm or relaxed
- Blue-green: Somewhat relaxed
- Green: Normal or average
- Amber: A little nervous or anxious
- Gray: Very nervous or anxious
- Black: Stressed, tense or feeling harried
