Movie Preview: John Carter

Wednesday, February 29, 2012 , 0 Comments

Little did I knew that Disney’s newest 3d epic action adventure, John Carter was based from an Edgar Rice Burrough’s classic, “A Princess of Mars.” Upon hearing the title, my initial reaction was that it was pretty ordinary, or to put it bluntly “Lame”. However, upon reading up on some PR materials from the movie, I’ve come to know that John Carter was a character that set the paradigm for all the heroic forms of pop culture.

Photobucket

The movie is about how a war-weary former military captain named John Carter (Taylor Kitsch) was marooned on the planet Mars inexplicably. Soon he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict amongst the inhabitants of the planet including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). During this plight, he rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of everyone else rests in his hands.

Sounds melo-dramatic right but I’m keeping an open-mind about this epic movie. I want to see why Andrew Stanton, the director and writer for the movie has been very inspired to bring the book to life on the big screen. The Barsoom series of books seems pretty interesting too. I might just check that out as well. John Carter will soon open in Philippine cinemas this coming March, let’s see if we’ll be left in awe.

Gadgets & Tech: The Nokia 808 Pureview Smartphone

Tuesday, February 28, 2012 0 Comments

Did you ever hear that SLR companies are now fearing that cameras are going to become obsolete now that people have resorted to taking photos with their phones more and more? Why not though? Phones are so much portable than bulky SLRs and there a lot of apps to apply photo filter to photos without having to buy any other equipment. With SLRs on the other hand, you’d have to buy a very good lens, the proper photo filters and other attachments in order to achieve the same effect.

Photobucket

Perhaps this is what Nokia was counting on when they released the Nokia 808 Pureview smartphone. While big brands today have already dismissed Nokia in the running for leading smartphones, I think Nokia is making a comeback. Could this be the moment they’ve been waiting for?

Movie Review: Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance

Tuesday, February 28, 2012 , 0 Comments

Normally a skull on fire would be perceived as one of the symbols for evil. This is why at initial glance; The Ghost Rider can be seen as such, an emissary for the dark forces. This is why he’s very fascinating as a hero or a dark avenger because he’s a mystery, seriously unpredictable but every bit as powerful as his other heroic counterparts. For the first movie, I don’t share with the general public opinion that it was bad because I liked it. I liked how Nicolas Cage gave life to the character of Johnny Blaze.

Photobucket

Plot:

The priest Moreau (Idris Elba) enlists the help of Johnny Blaze (Nicolas Cage) as the Rider to help retrieve Danny (Fergus Riordan), a boy who’s believed to be the very spawn of the Devil himself. The Devil wants him so that he can have a more permanent vessel for his spirit. The Rider must save the boy and bring him to the priests that Monroe serves in order to get rid of his curse.

Movie Preview: Wrath of the Titans New Trailer

Monday, February 27, 2012 , 0 Comments

I was underwhelmed with the first movie, Clash of the Titans but looking at the previous released trailers for this sequel, I’m really impressed. There looks to be more action and more backstory than the bickering of the gods of Olympus in the first movie. The demigods looks to be on top of things and would be the ones saving the gods.

Photobucket

Perseus (Sam Worthington) comes once again to the aid of his father, Zeus despite already having settled as a fisherman raising his 10 year old son, Helius. We don’t know what has happened to Io. The gods are severely weakened by the lack of devotion from humans and were in need of help controlling the imprisoned titans led by Kronos. Hades (Ralph Fiennes) and Ares (Edgar Ramirez) conspired with the titans to capture Zeus. Perseus must then enlist the help of Queen Andromeda (Rosamund Pike) and Argenor (Toby Kebbell) to help rescue Zeus.

Opening in March, Wrath of the Titans is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. The new trailer for the movie can be seen below.

Reasons to Re-live the TItanic Movie in 3d

Sunday, February 26, 2012 , 0 Comments

“Near Far wherever you are...”
Upon mention of the movie Titanic, Celine Dion’s My Heart Will Go On immediately plays on my head. This iconic song will forever be associated with the movie which also broke a lot of records. I saw the movie about twice in the cinemas and more times than I can care to remember when it was showing on HBO. Both me and my mom can’t somehow resist its lure whenever we see it on cable tv.

So what makes Titanic a very memorable movie? Aside from the song I mentioned above, here are my top 5s.

Best Candy Photographs: Candy Madness!!

Friday, February 24, 2012 0 Comments

I can’t resist good candy. I’m one of them adults who are still very much fond of these sweet treats. If strolling through a mall and I see a candy stand, somehow my feet get a mind of their own and gravitate towards it even if I don’t want to. Okay, okay that’s a measly excuse. While I’m trying to carb my cravings for candies, look what I stumbled into. A whole gallery of them over at The Berry.  [beware though, they might give you cravings too]

Movie Review: Journey 2 The Mysterious Island

Thursday, February 23, 2012 , 0 Comments

I know that this review is a little late in coming but bear with me as I write down some thoughts I had about this film. I wasn’t able to watch Journey to the Center of the Earth prior to watching Journey 2, so I had no idea that Sean (Josh Hutcherson) was the same actor in the first film.

PhotobucketPlot
Sean’s (Josh Hutcherson) adventure begins when he receives a mysterious signal that Hank (Dwayne Johnson) helped him decipher. Hank is his mom’s new fiance. Before long, both were already on the way to the island of Palau where Sean thinks the mysterious island is located. They enlist the help of father-daughter team, Kailani (Vanessa Hudgens) and Gabato (Luis Gazman). Finding themselves caught in the eye of a hurricane, their chopper crashed onto the very island that they were looking for. Initial wonders of the island made it so much like paradise, until it began to divulge its secrets.

Lindsay Lohan and the Jag billboard hop

Thursday, February 23, 2012 , , 0 Comments

Everyday my route to work takes me to C5 road where there are huge billboards lining up alongside the flyover. One of them has an ad from Jag in which Lindsay Lohan is the current endorser. The first time that billboard from Jag went up, I had to do a double-take to  make sure that I was really seeing Lindsay Lohan on there. This was the ad that went up.

Photobucket

Okay so her hair was meticulously styled but I was mildly annoyed at the black roots among the golden locks.  Her smokey eyes were flawless and only she can pull off that “come hither” look – La Lohan style. Then I noticed a lot of other things too. “Hmmm, has she lost a lot weight?” She now has uber thin arms and legs. While the face is still pretty, the rest of her body weren’t looking too great.

How to Woo a Woman: Team Pine vs. Team Hardy in This Means War

Wednesday, February 22, 2012 , 0 Comments

Lauren (Reese Witherspoon) is caught between choosing from two gorgeous men who are adamant at making her fall in-love. True, most women (including me) were quite envious that she was put in that predicament. I mean, who wouldn’t want to be wooed right?

Photobucket

In This Means War, she managed to turn best friends Tuck (Tom Hardy) and FDR (Chris Pine) into clever and beguiling rivals. Both wants to win her heart even at the cost of their friendship.
Photobucket

Having watched the movie already at a premiere last week, I just can’t get enough of the fun and the ruckus. I can’t wait to watch it again. For those who do not know, the movie opens today in cinemas nationwide. Still my vote goes to Team Hardy. Let the wooing begin! Read my review for the movie HERE.

Free Android App: Path

Tuesday, February 21, 2012 , , 0 Comments

I’ve been a happy user of Path for some two weeks now and at times I have to stop myself from posting there too much as not to spam my Path friends. It can get very addicting! For those who do not know, Path is a social media journaling app that is available both for the iPhone and for Android phones. At first, I was apprehensive in trying the free Android app out because as of the moment, I already had too much social networking sites to keep me procrastinating for the better part of the day (oh the shame!) but when I got to it, it was quite fun. What do you think? Will Path be good to try out?

Movie Preview: My Week with Marilyn

Tuesday, February 21, 2012 , 0 Comments

Mention the name Marilyn Monroe to me and what immediately comes to mind is a willowy blond with classic American beauty in a white dress. You all know that famous photo I’m talking about. It has become iconic as Marilyn herself. I have to be honest though, I know so little about Marilyn’s life and what made her the icon that she is. Perhaps the movie My Week with Marilyn will further my curiosity with the life of the icon.

Photobucket
On the left is Michelle Williams, on the right is the real Marilyn.

The movie stars Michelle Williams and Kenneth Branagh and will soon be shown exclusively at Ayala Mall Cinemas. It tells of the recounts from the memoir of Colin Clark with which he tells of a magical week he spent with the star. He also wrote a previous memoir entitled The Prince, the Showgirl and Me, which documents his experiences onset as a production hand in The Prince and the Showgirl, a film which starred Marilyn and was directed by Sir Laurence Olivier. I’m eager to know what Clark wrote in this particular memoir. We’ll see shall we?

I’m soo loving these right now

Photobucket
  • Maybelline Strawberry Lip Balm

While my original lip balms were always cherry, I took a chance and tried out strawberry when I bought this last week and what do you know? I’m loving this color more. What I like about Maybelline lip balms are they’re not sticky on the lips. It just provides the right amount of moisture so that the lips won’t feel chapped. The color also lasts longer than most lip balms even after drinking my favorite drink or eating.

  • Krispy Kreme Kaffe Kreme

I’ve discovered the perfect blend of latte and coffee with Krispy Kreme’s Kaffe Kreme. What makes it special is that it’s made from their original blend of coffee. Since I’ve taken to hanging out recently at a Krispy Kreme near my office, this is my drink of choice. Best enjoyed with a doughnut of course!

  • Dove Nourishing Oil Care Shampoo Photobucket

Ever since I heard Delamar of RX93.1 gushing about it on the radio during their show The Morning Rush and on her tweets (of which I’m a follower of), I’ve been curious to try it. So when coincidentally my shampoo ran out last week, I eagerly made a beeline for where the Dove products were located and promptly put myself to the task of choosing which one should be best for my hair. I couldn’t choose the one for straight hair of course since I’m still wearing my hair in curls so I opted for the nourishing oil care instead. After having tried it for a week, I must say there’s really a huge difference from the other shampoos I’ve tried. My hair has less frizz, it’s softer and it smells good too even at the end of the day. So this was a really good buy.

  • Music from Pretty Little Liars

One of the factors why I love watching the show is the very good selection of songs that are cued expertly into each episode. Not only is the series a treat for the eyes, it is for the ears as well. Not to mention the pretty good and riveting story. When I’m deeply engrossed in my work tasks, this is the music I like to keep in the background as well. Now I can’t wait for the season 2 soundtrack to come out.

The inspiration behind This Means War

Tuesday, February 21, 2012 , 0 Comments

I have expressed my utmost enjoyment upon watching This Means War and I was delighted to learn a few days later that the plot of the movie was somewhat loosely based on the personal experience of the writer behind the film, Marcus Gautesen.

Photobucket

Back in college, Marcus and his roommate were living in a two bedroom apartment in New York City’s Little Italy. Due to financial constraints, they were forced to rent out the other bedroom where a beautiful French woman came to live. Both vied for the woman’s affection and both tried to sabotage each other’s attempts.

Photobucket

That was where the backstory of the movie This Means War came from. I’m thoroughly excited to see it again, come tomorrow it will be shown in cinemas nationwide. Read my review and more about the movie through THIS LINK.

Movie Preview: Jack and Jill

Sunday, February 19, 2012 , 0 Comments

I can’t exactly remember when I’ve seen my last Adam Sandler movie but I have always loved them. Sandler’s definitely has his own unique style in comedy. Now in Jack and Jill, we’ll not only get to see one but two of him.

Photobucket

I’m already intrigued at how this will turn out. Jack and Jill is a movie about how during Thanksgiving Jack endures a two-day visit from his twin sister Jill. During childhood they were as close as can be but when Jack moved away, they began to live lives as different people. Jack became a successful executive in an ad agency while Jill stayed behind to take care of their parents. On top of facing the prospect of enduring the annual two day visit from Jill, his ad agency is about to lose its biggest client, Dunkin Donuts. They will stay on board only if he gets Al Pacino in their commercial. Pacino however is an actor who seemed to be losing his mind, having played too many roles. When he schedules an impromptu meetup at a game, Pacino was only interested in talking to Jill. Jill now becomes the romantic interest of Pacino but Jill isn’t interested. Now it’s up to Jack to convince her otherwise. Will he be able to?

Movie Review: This Means War

Friday, February 17, 2012 , 0 Comments

My initial thoughts coming out of the theater last night after the premiere was that I haven’t laughed this hard (and so long) because of a movie in such a long time. The last I could remember was Hangover and Due Date. Man! This was an awesome movie.

Photobucket

This Means War stars Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine and Tom Hardy. Where Tuck (Tom Hardy) and FDR Foster (Chris Pine) were best friends who unknowingly started the same girl. They made a pact to let Lauren (Reese Witherspoon) decide for herself who the better man is for her. They also agreed not to let her know that they know each other. Lastly, the dating and courting must not get in the way of their friendship and of their job in the CIA. That’s how their gentleman’s agreement went. Now the big question left was “who will Lauren fall for?”

Free Android App: Screenshot ER

Thursday, February 16, 2012 , 0 Comments

When I’m reviewing apps for my Android phone, I find it extremely useful to take screenshots of the app that I’m reviewing. I’ll share with you the one app that I found so useful these past few months and it’s completely free.

freeandroidapp-screenshotER-001

Screenshot ER is a free Android app available in the Android Market for use as a great screen capturing application for your rooted Android phone. Yes, unfortunately, it does need for your phone to be rooted. it also has a PRO version but the only difference between the free and the paid version is the 6-10 second wait between screenshots. If you don’t mind this wait, then the free version should be a good download.

TV series: Game of Thrones Season 2 Poster

Wednesday, February 15, 2012 0 Comments

The tagline for the first season of the Game of Thrones was Winter is Coming. Now for those who have already read the book, this poster makes a lot of sense.

Photobucket

Season 2 is based from the second book of George R.R. Martin’s epic masterpiece, The Clash of the Kings. The book is mostly about war between would-be kings vying for the Iron Throne. I am most especially looking forward to Tyrion’s parts in this season, I became an instant fan when I read through the book. He’s going to be awesome!

The Walking Dead is back

Wednesday, February 15, 2012 , 0 Comments

Warning: Might contain some spoilers

After the long wait during the season break, the Walking Dead is finally back and we get to see what happens next. When it left off months ago, there was a massacre of zombies at the barn in Hershel’s land. It is also when the mystery of Sophia was solved. After several episodes of unsuccessful searches, it was finally over. The ending was emotional and very fitting for the season break. It wasn’t a cliff-hanger and yet it left me with loads of questions about what happens next.

thewalkingdead-season2-001
Would Hershel finally kick them out of his farm after this incident?
Shane is becoming more and more of the bad guy in the group, will the writers expound on this story angle more?
What will happen now that Rick knows about Shane and Lorie? Will the rest of the group find out?

Well, after having watched the Nebraska episode, I’m a bit underwhelmed with the series’ return. There wasn’t much of zombie action that I know most viewers have probably been clamoring about for several months now. Although, this episode set in motion several plot points that I think will carry on for the rest of the show.

Movie Review: We bought a Zoo

Wednesday, February 15, 2012 , 0 Comments

I saw this movie weeks ago and up to now, I can still remember the good feeling I got from watching it. This is a great family-movie that has such heart and pleasantness, that you just can’t help but be inspired with it.

Photobucket

Based from a true story, Benjamin Mee (Matt Damon) sought to have a fresh start after the death of his wife and resigning from his job by taking on the challenge of rehabilitating and taking care of a run-down private zoo. Knowing nothing about taking care of zoos, he must face financial hurdles, gain the trust of the animals and his staff lead by Kelly Foster (Scarlett Johansson). In the process, he was able to fulfill a life-long dream, bring his family closer together and make others believe in themselves again.

Movie Review: Safehouse

Monday, February 13, 2012 , 0 Comments

Photobucket

There are only perhaps a handful of movies that I’ve seen where Ryan Reynold’s character isn’t the one providing humorous quips and crazy antics, Safehouse is one of them. I think part of Ryan Reynold’s charm on-screen is the sense of humor and comedic timing that comes effortlessly from him so it commands attention when he’s doing more serious roles. In Safehouse, he played a CIA rookie who’s yet to experience life in the field and in my opinion he acted the part out just like that. While acting opposite Denzel Washington’s character who’s every bit as notorious, calm and collected as a rogue CIA agent, Reynolds was awkward, nervous and impulsive. Opposite traits that played off well on the big screen.

Beauty and the Beast in 3d

Sunday, February 12, 2012 , 0 Comments

Have you noticed just how many of the movie classics have been reformatted into 3d? Everything’s clearer and larger than life. What’s next after Lion King for Disney? Now we can see Belle, the Beast and Lumiere and the gang in glorious 3d too. What came into mind when I saw the poster was the theme song for the movie.

Tale as old as time, True as it can be…

Beautyandthebeast3d

Beauty and the Beast is the enchanting tale of a prince who was cursed to be a beast because he doesn’t know how to love. He has to learn before the last petal fell from the enchanted rose given to him by powerful enchantress. As destiny would have it, Belle wanders into the enchanted castle to save her father and was taken as a prisoner in exchange. Against her will, she fell in-love with all the mix of characters and people living inside the castle including the beast but an enraged townsfolk lead by Gaston, Belle’s suitor, storms the castle while she was checking on her father. The tale reaches its climax as Belle races to the aid of the beast and his friends.

Another memorable part of the movie for me is right at the start during Belle’s song. Beauty and the Beast really sends me a wonderful feeling of nostalgia and it’s nice to be able to watch it again. Coming soon in theaters, plan out a movie date to watch it in 3d.

Oh, isn’t this amazing. It’s my favorite part because you’ll see. Here’s where she meets Prince Charming but she won’t discover that it’s him ‘til chapter three…

Book Review: Infidel by Ted Dekker (Book 2 The Lost Books)

Sunday, February 12, 2012 , 0 Comments

2012 Reading Challenge: Book 4 of 75

This is Book 2 of The Lost Books series by Ted Dekker and like I’ve mentioned in my previous review of the first book, I resolved to read the next book just to see what made this series very interesting (based from the reviews that it got from Goodreads). The story picked up right where it left off in the first book. On an interesting note, the entire Lost Books series have titles in which the first letters spell the word C-I-R-C-L-E.

PhotobucketBook Flap:From Chosen to Traitor?
After being stretched to their limits, the four heroic young Forest Guard recruits--Johnis, Silvie, Billos, and Darsal--are pulled into deeper danger on their mission to secure the seven lost Books of History.
Celebrated as a hero, Johnis's world is shattered when he learns that his mother may not be dead as presumed but could be living as a slave to the Horde. Throwing caution to the wind, he rushes to her rescue.
But this is precisely what the Horde has planned. Now he will face a choice between Silvie, whom he is quickly falling for, and his sworn duty to protect the Forest Dwellers. How can he save those he loves without betraying his own people?
In the end, one will be revealed as the Infidel. And nothing will be the same for the remaining Chosen.

The Kissinger from Lovotics

Thursday, February 09, 2012 0 Comments

No one can deny that keeping a long-distance relationship (LDR) is extremely hard. That’s not even said in an exaggerated sense but as a matter of fact. The couple would need to devote a lot of time and effort in order to make it work, otherwise they’ll break up in no time. I’m not speaking from experience though but I’ve heard enough from friends who used to be or are currently in one to know how it is. A slightly light and comedic look on it was seen in Going the Distance.

I think the noble intention of helping couples in LDRs was the inspiration for the Kissinger. On one episode of The Big Bang Theory, Leonard and Priya were in a long-distance relationship. So for a time it was Skype chats and meals together via webcam. Howard attempts to help by introducing Leonard to a kissing machine. One that could send virtual kisses that would feel “real”. He did a test run on it with Raj. Well, the resulting scene was just hilarious.

Photobucket

I didn’t think that they’d really come up with one in real life. Hence, the kissinger. It works by transmitting lip movements between two robots that presumably both couples should have. According to the description at Gizmodiva, the Kissinger also works for single people too by offering a variety of kissing modes:

Kissenger enables 3 modes of interactions. If you are into that kind of thing, there is a Human to Robot kiss, enabling an intimate relationship with a robot. And even the Human to Virtual character physical/virtual kiss mode, which enables you to kiss virtual characters while playing games and receive physical kisses from their favorite virtual characters.

Photobucket

What do you think: Helpful or not? Would couples currently in long-distance relationships consider getting one? Let me know your thoughts.

Book Pillows and Zombie Pen Holders

Thursday, February 09, 2012 , , 0 Comments

Of my four year stay at the University of the Philippines, I can only recall a few times that I went to the Main Library. I only went there when I had the need to research rare books for my general subject classes. It was the same at the College Library. Although I scoured it for design books, I only did that during my senior year. I wasn’t a heavy user of the internet then and besides, during that time only a few design sites were available too.

You would think with that me being a bookworm and all, the library would feel like a second home to me. It would be IF they were very well-designed and cozy but the university libraries sadly weren’t. I preferred studying at home. Speaking of that scenario, this brings me back to my high school days when I’d be allotting 6 hours to study for an exam. However, I’d spend half of that sleeping. Haha. Well, I did pass highschool with flying colors so there’s no need to be alarmed. I don’t know what it is with the prospect of spending hours studying that my brain automatically links it with sleeping.

This book pillow would have been very useful during those times.

Photobucket

See? You can even put it somewhere where it will be mistaken as an ordinary book. Very incognito.

Photobucket

Then again, this is just me being playful. :P [PRODUCT PAGE]

Here’s a shot of what my desk at the office looks like. I know it’s pretty cluttered. I still haven’t bought a pen holder to keep my pens neatly organized.

Photobucket

When I saw this zombie pen holder, I was immediately charmed by its quirkiness. It also reminded me of my new-found love for anything zombie-related, be it movies, tv series (Walking Dead) and literature. Not only is the design quirky but it would also make me perfectly organized, see? Oh and I know I’ll be making squishy noises everytime I stick a pen in it. :D

Squish squish. Zombie head pen holders are awesome! Open-mouthed smile [PRODUCT PAGE]

Movie Preview: Skyfall

Sunday, February 05, 2012 , 0 Comments

The next James Bond film is coming our way soon. Skyfall is said to be the 23rd aventure in the movie franchise. In Skyfall, James Bond’s loyalty to M (Judi Dench) is put to the test as events from her past comes back to haunt her. As a result, MI6 comes under attack, Bond must track down the threat at whatever cost.

Photobucket

Columbia Pictures has just released an official photo still from the movie. From what we see above, Daniel Craig as James Bond is looking more gruff as usual. The tiny pistol suggests that he may be doing some surveillance operation that has gone terribly wrong. There is unbelievable height buzzing for this film, let’s see if it will be just as good as the first two with Daniel Craig in it.

The film will also star Javier Bardem, Dame Judi Dench, Naomie Harris, Ralph Fiennes, Albert Finney, Ben Whishaw and Bérénice Marlohe.

Free Android App: Magic Hour Free

Saturday, February 04, 2012 , , 0 Comments

I downloaded Magic Hour Free on a whim when I was scouring the Android Market for photo apps with lots of filters. It is named Magic Hour for that perfect time at sunrise and sunset when it is perfect to take pictures.

Photobucket

The app is easy enough to use. Just click on Take Photo after launching the app and you’re good to go. It has smart focus and saves the original photo automatically. After taking the shot, you can choose from the numerous filter effects that comes with the app either in standard list view or in a slideshow view. You don’t have to revert to the original photo in order to apply a new filter. Each new effect gives you the convenience of saving and sharing it immediately.

Photobucket

What I like about the app is the Filter Market. You can download more filter effects from here (both free and paid) if you still can’t get enough of the 40 filters that comes with the free app.

Photobucket

The Verdict

I like it very much. The ease of use and the cool dashboard instantly won me over. The free version alone is worth keeping on your phone but if you want extra features like unlimited access to the filters in the Filter Market. The filter effects were very good too and it doesn’t take a lot of processing time to apply them.
