As I'm writing this post, a Maroon 5 song is playing on my head. I'm bobbing my head to the tune.

That was a line from Payphone. Are you a big fan of Maroon 5 as I am? Well here’s your chance to get to watch them in their September 18 concert here in Manila. I’m delighted to bring to you news that JBL Philippines is giving away tickets and who knows? It might be you!

Getting Curled again at Beauty Brick Salon

Thursday, August 30, 2012 , 0 Comments

After more than a year since my last visit at Beauty Brick Hair Art Studio, I went back two weeks ago to get my hair cut and curled again. Since I knew that Beauty Brick has a lot of customers, I sent them a text to reserve an appointment. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that returning customers get a discount and that they haven't changed their rates from last year.

When I was there, it was a crazy busy day for the employees of BB. Mr. Shin, the owner and lead stylist, was in the midst of the hive of activity. This is one of the things that I liked from Beauty Brick, the owner is very hands-on. There were also several other things that I noticed too:

Health Boosts from Ginsana and Seresis

It's no secret to close friends of mind just how crammed my schedule is in a typical day. Each day has been a constant juggle between work, blogging and my personal life. Writing for several blogs is no mean feat but it's something that I enjoy immensely. I have a career that also requires me to work for more than 12 hours a day. The past week though I have a little secret that's been helping me along to handle stress a little better.

My health boosters had been Ginsana and Seresis. Both are health supplements made by Ginsana SA, a Boehringer Ingelheim Group company.

In the upcoming movie The Watch, Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn team up together to defeat an alien that’s prowling around their neighborhood. Their personalities however are polar opposites. Evan (Ben Stiller) is a senior manager at Costco and is the head of the Glenview Neighborhood Watch. Since he cannot make new friends on his own, he uses this community group to meet new people. Bob (Vince Vaughn) on the other hand, just wants to get away from family life for a while. He wants to hang out with the guys.

The New Look of Photobucket.com

Saturday, August 25, 2012 , 0 Comments

I've enjoyed a premium account in Photobucket for almost a year now and I've never found any other image host which provided good service, easy organization of my photos and fast loading of gallery contents. However, there was indeed something to be said of the web interface of the site and for a time, changing the background patterns of each album became too tiring even for me. The old site needed a fresh make-over and through the efficient use of the survey forms they sent out months ago, I've finally gotten an email to try out the new and improved Photobucket site. It is still in beta mode and open to more improvements but my initial impression was very good.

The welcome/home page is now loads better. It doesn't open anymore to your default album and it shows a huge thumbnail of your recent upload. There's also now quick links to your library and the image editor. The menu bar which is still on top has also been given minor facelifts as well as the more minimal color scheme of the entire site.

Tips and Tricks for Major Mayhem

Saturday, August 25, 2012 0 Comments

One of the free Android games from the Play Store that I really enjoy playing on my Android phone is Major Mayhem (see initial review). It has been the kind of game that I can play over and over even though I’ve finished all the missions and the story mode. I’ve been trying for several days to earn enough coins to buy the more powerful weapons in the game. I’m also trying to gain 3 star medals for each game level. Having played it for a considerable amount of time, I’ve gathered enough tips to share with you so that you can have the maximum Major Mayhem playing experience.

The Campaign Movie Review

Thursday, August 23, 2012 , 0 Comments

If there's one aspect of society that I mostly stay away from, it's politics. Why? Two things, it has always been dirty and it turns good men into corrupt leaders. This is why while watching the movie, The Campaign, I was amused by the comedic pranks and the ridiculous hilarity of some key scenes but in truth it was an exaggerated look into how cruel and dubiously shady the world of politics is. My laughter comes with the realization at how conflicting the life of a politician could be.

Why I enjoyed The Expendables 2: A movie review

Sunday, August 19, 2012 , 0 Comments

If you peg me to be girl who's into more chic flicks than action films then you're wrong. I do enjoy chair gripping, car-chased filled and explosive action flicks much more than I care to admit. The Expendables 2 was one testosterone dominated movie but made this girl very happy and thoroughly entertained.
Photobucket

Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) and his team, The Expendables were sent out on a mission for Church (Bruce Willis) and in the process crossed the path of one who called himself Vilain (Jean Claude van Damme). Yep I know, it's one bad name for a bad guy but hey during the entire movie I didn't even know it was spelled that way. Haha. During the mission, one of the Expendables gets killed and the important package was lost. The mission failed and Barney set out to retrieve the package and to avenge his man's death. The task involved securing a large amount of plutonium, rescuing innocent civilians and going through torrents of Vilain's defenses.

Free Android App: Pinterest

Thursday, August 16, 2012 , 0 Comments

I tried out the new mobile app for Pinterest users using my Android phone as soon as it hit the Play Store. Since I'm a very active Pinterest user, I was pretty excited. Here's my first run-through. The download from the Play Store is not that hefty, it will just take up only 4.6M of your memory space and the app loaded fairly fast. The default screen shows the current pins from boards that you follow.
free-Android-app-Pinterest
I think that the app would be best viewed with a tablet since the gallery view is only limited to two columns on a standard smartphone. I was using a Samsung Galaxy S2. The startup screen is very very similar to what can be seen on the website of Pinterest.

Movie Preview: Hotel Transylvania

Wednesday, August 15, 2012 , 0 Comments

These days I'm caught up in the TV series called Grimm where a cop finds himself being able to monsters that normally he wouldn't see. Just think if there were indeed monsters all around us living in secret. It's kinda like the aliens amidst humans in the Men in Black movies. In Hotel Transylvania, monsters can freely check in without humans noticing their existence.
hotel-transylvania-movie
Dracula (voiced by Adam Sandler) was celebrating his beloved daughter's 118th birthday, which was the coming of age in the vampire world. No Dracula and his daughter Mavis (voiced by Selena Gomez) won't sparkle but there are sure to be a lot of jokes in this comedy animation film. Dracula will be joined in by his pal Frankenstein (Kevin James) and his bride, Murray the Mummy (Cee Lo Green), the Invisible Man (David Spade) and Wanda (Molly Shannon) and the Werewolf family.

A Drink to Good Health with Enercal Plus

Wednesday, August 15, 2012 0 Comments

I'm an avid coffee drinker and I average to about 3 cups a day. However, sometimes I do take the time to take a break from my poison of choice and look for something healthier to drink. My work involves, at times more than 12 hours of stress in a day unlike most jobs that end at 5pm or 6pm. Aside from clocking more than several hours of the required working quote per week, I also try to squeeze in sufficient amounts of blogging time as long as I still have the energy to write.
enercalbox
Last Sunday, I tried something new. I took a break from my usual coffee fix and instead chose to make myself a warm cup of Enercal Plus. Enercal Plus is Wyeth's adult nutritional supplement that can be an important source of vitamins like Vitamin A, C and E. It also contains whey protein that's good for muscle synthesis.

Character Posters for Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days

Saturday, August 11, 2012 , 0 Comments

Zachary Gordon is back to reprise his role as Greg Heffley and a plan to be spending his summer playing video games with Rowley (Robert Capron) is thwarted by his father who eagerly wants to engage in summer activities with his son. Also back to make his life miserable is big brother Rodrick (Devon Bostick). While swimming and camping sounds like fun, count on Greg to get himself into embarrassing situations. I guess we’ll be seeing a lot of that as well as a pretty girl who’s just moved into the neighborhood and seems to be charming her way into Greg’s heart. The role of Holly Hills will be played by Peyton List. Also back to reprise their roles are Fregley (Grayson Russell), Chirag Gupta (Karan Brar) and Patty Farrell (Laine MacNeil).

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days will be seen in Philippine theaters starting August 15, 2012.  The character posters for Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days are shown below, as always, they are available in high resolutions. Just click on the photo and the hi-res photos will be shown in a new tab.

How to Tell if Your Make-up is Expired

Friday, August 10, 2012 1 Comments

Ladies, tell me honestly, if you rummage through your make-up kit/bag, do you have items there that are already years old? If so, then there's a good chance that some of those products are already expired. Don't worry, I'm guilty of the same thing too. However, cosmetic companies don't really put expiration dates on their products and it's rare for me to see those stamped on a lipstick tube or say even in an eye shadow palette. There's another problem too, if you're one who's a little bit hesitant to throw an expensive product away, then it's likely that you'll keep them there for years. Also, if I read through when you should throw this out, I'm already estimating that I've only used the product halfway through. It'll be a shame to throw away the rest right?
how-to-tell-if-your-make-up-is-expired

Skin experts strongly advise though that make-up products should be thrown after they've become expired no matter how much you love them or no matter if you don't see any effect on your skin after prolonged use. Why? Here are some reasons:

Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis goes Head to Head in The Campaign

Thursday, August 09, 2012 , 0 Comments

We’ve all seen how crazy it gets during the elections. The Campaign movie will show us the funny side of it all. Starring alongside each other in what looks to be a promising comedy movie of sorts are Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis. Will Ferrell plays the role of Cam Brady and here’s what he can say about the elections:
“One of the things the story makes fun of is the amount of money that can be poured into elections and how much influence it can have. The district these guys are fighting over is a relatively small one, unimportant on the larger stage, but, for the powers that circle it, it’s vital for their business interests and therefore worth a great deal to them.”

My Picks from Sweetheart Vintage Collections

Wednesday, August 08, 2012 0 Comments

Here’s a new online shopping site for women’s clothes and accessories to watch out for – Sweetheart Vintage Collections. The site itself has a very adorable color scheme and girly design elements which are just so nice to look at. Since the site is relatively new, there’s only a few selected pieces on display in their gallery but they’re oh so beautiful. I’m looking forward to the next line of clothes that they’ll feature. What sets them apart from other sites are the affordability of their items and the fact that they’re hand-picked. In the meantime, here are my faves:

Metro Manila (and nearby provinces) Hit by Heavy Monsoon Rains

Wednesday, August 08, 2012 0 Comments

The other night, I bailed out on a press screening halfway through the movie when I had started to receive frantic calls and messages from my parents urging me to go home. Since I was inside the cinema, I couldn’t see what was going on outside. A quick check on Twitter told me these:
  • the roads I’ll be passing on the way home was heavy with traffic
  • Metro Manila was under a Green warning from PAGASA
  • there were already a lot of areas in the Metro that were already starting to get flooded
PAGASA-color-codes
My leaving that early turned out to be a good call. Barely an hour after I set out on the way home, a Red warning was issued for Metro Manila. Then when I got home, I saw that people had begun to post about the water levels rising exactly on the roads that I had passed moments before. I got to sleep around 2am and it was a mounting panic over Twitter and Facebook. People were alarmed that this was going to be a repeat of the disaster brought on by typhoon Ondoy just 3 years ago. Sleep was light and by 5am, I was already up and grateful that my boss (even though she is currently on vacation in the US) had suspended work for the day.

Rowley’s Tips for Summer in Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days

Wednesday, August 08, 2012 , 0 Comments

My favorite character in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid both in the books and the movies is Rowley Jefferson, Greg Heffley’s best friend. What I like about him is that he’s genuine and a really good friend to Greg even if sometimes that puts him into trouble. In the latest movie, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days, Greg Heffley is determined to have the best summer ever. Those plans were thwarted when Greg’s father decides that they need more father-and-son bonding time. So Greg and Rowley makes a plan which involves a fake job at the ritzy country club. However, as we all know, where Greg Heffley goes trouble is sure to follow.

Now back to my favorite character, here are some of his tips about how to survive grown-ups for the summer.

The New Trailer for Taken 2

Tuesday, August 07, 2012 , 0 Comments

One of the most disturbing movies I’ve seen was Taken. I get so easily affected with a movie when it has a theme that involves the maltreatment of women. Now it seems that Taken will be getting a sequel with the new trailer already out. Liam Neeson reprises his role as the former CIA Agent Bryan Mills and joined along with Famke Janssen and Maggie Grace who play Mills’ wife and precious daughter. This time in Taken 2, the Albanian goons are out for him to exact revenge. Murad (Rade Sherbedgia) leads the villains out to get Mills and his family. He succeeds in taking Mills and his wife with only Kim (Maggie Grace) left to do impossible things in order to save her parents.

Read an excerpt of the latest Pendergast Novel: Two Graves by Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child

Tuesday, August 07, 2012 0 Comments

If you’ve been following this blog for a while then you’ll know about my love for the whole Pendergast series of books written by the wonderful tandem of Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child. The latest book Two Graves was originally meant to be released earlier this year but due to problems with their publisher, it’s been moved to December. Now to appease their readers (who just can’t wait to read the third book of the backstory of Pendergast’s wife), they’ve announced that chapter excerpts will be released every month or so.
You can read the chapter excerpt HERE. <-----

The Hobbit is Set to be a Trilogy

Monday, August 06, 2012 , 0 Comments

I only became acquainted with the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien around the time the first movie was released in cinemas. After that, I had read through the Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit even before the second LOTR movie came out. Suffice to say, The Hobbit was a very good book to read with all the adventures of Bilbo that was only mentioned in passing in the Lord of the Rings. There are a lot of key events that happened in The Hobbit and with the movie adaptation set to be a trilogy it looks like Peter Jackson will be touching on most of them.
The-Hobbit-Trilogy
What gets fans excited about this film is that with the success of the LOTR movies under his belt, The Hobbit movie adaptation seems to be in good hands. The only bad thing is the long wait for the entire movie to be concluded. The first set of the trilogy, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be shown in December 14, 2012.

Best Books for Dog Lovers

Monday, August 06, 2012 0 Comments

  • Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World’s Worst Dog by John Grogan
books-for-dog-lovers
Synopsis:
In this funny and poignant memoir about a wildly neurotic Labrador retriever named Marley, an unsuspecting young couple come to understand what really matters. Marley had no brakes on his loyalty, exuberance, or passion.
Loved the movie, reduced me to tears and made me want to hug my dogs more.

  • Inside of a Dog: What Dogs See, Smell and Know by Alexandra Horowitz
books-for-dog-lovers
Synopsis:
Inside of a Dog is a fresh look at the world of dogs -- from the dog's point of view. As a dog owner, Horowitz is naturally curious to learn what her dog thinks about and knows. And as a scientist, she is intent on understanding the minds of animals who cannot speak for themselves.
In clear, crisp prose, Horowitz introduces the reader to dogs' perceptual and cognitive abilities and then draws a picture of what it might be like to be a dog. What's it like to be able to smell not just every bit of open food in the house but also to smell sadness in humans or even the passage of time? How does a tiny dog manage to play successfully with a Great Dane? What is it like to hear the bodily vibrations of insects or the hum of a fluorescent light? Why must a person on a bicycle be chased? What's it like to use your mouth as a hand? In short, what is it like for a dog to experience life from two feet off the ground, amidst the smells of the sidewalk, gazing at our ankles or knees?

Catching Up on the Latest Episodes of Pretty Little Liars Season 3

Monday, August 06, 2012 , 0 Comments

I've been a long time fan of the show Pretty Little Liars ever since my sister convinced me that I will love it. True enough, it's one of the shows that I can't get enough of and has to be watched "marathon-style". I've learned to root for, hate, forgive and accept Hanna, Aria, Spencer and Emily's secrets along with their weaknesses and joys. We all thought that since Mona had already been revealed in Season 2 as "A" that the girls would now be safe, Season 3 has opened up more questions and more secrets. It seems like everyone has a secret agenda now and the new characters introduced so far has been raising my eyebrows with suspicion.
Photobucket
Last weekend, I've finally caught up with the latest episodes and events and I'll be writing about the highlights from two particular ones - Stolen Kisses and Crazy. Here are my thoughts:

The Children's Ward

Oh man, this has got to be the creepiest scene that I've seen on the show next to A's lair. The design crew did a spectacular job. As Mona's sanctuary in the insane asylum, it's got to be straight out from a thriller.

Manila as seen in Bourne Legacy

Sunday, August 05, 2012 , 0 Comments

Just last year, Manila was in a frenzy over the prospect of seeing Jeremy Renner and Rachel Weisz in one of the shoots done for the movie Bourne Legacy. The movie is a stand-alone from the previous Bourne films which starred Matt Damon. Shooting in the Philippines was a project that was helped along with the aid of Lope V. Juban Jr. He facilitated with communicating with the local officials to help ease the traffic in the shooting locations and the security of the film crew.
Bourne-Legacy-movie-Manila
Among the places that were included in the film were: San Andress, NAIA, Intramuros, Manila Yacht Club, Marikina market, the metropoint MRT Station in Pasay City and at El Nido in Palawan. The movie was important to show how different the Philippines is now from the previous films that were also shot here namely, Apocalypse Now, Born on the Fourth of July and Brokedown Palace.
Bourne-Legacy-movie-Manila
Admittedly, producer Patrick Crowley says that Manila was a hard city to shoot with. There's the ever present traffic jams and according to him, it was hard to move around. However, the graciousness and hospitality of the people about the films made a difference. Are you one of them excited to see the film which is due for its release nationwide on August 8? Bourne Legacy is directed by Tony Gilroy.

Chris Pine in the Family Drama People Like Us

Sunday, August 05, 2012 , 0 Comments

Most of the movies that I've seen of Chris Pine so far were mostly action films. At the top of my head I remember loving him in Star Trek: The Next Generation, Unstoppable and This Means War. In People Like Us, he's taken on a more dramatic role. Co-starring with him in the movie is Elizabeth Banks.
People-Like-Us
In the movie, Sam (Chris Pine) was a salesman who had recently found out that his father had died. Despite his protests, he reluctantly has to go back home and re-connect with his estranged family as he puts his father's estate in order. In the process, he discovers an amazing secret that his father has kept all these years. In a twist of fate, he finds himself a brother to a 30 year old sister named Frankie (Elizabeth Banks). Building a relationship with his sister made him re-think the choices he made in life.
The movie is actually based from a similar personal experience of the writer/director of the film, Alex Kurtzman. People Like Us will be shown exclusively in Ayala Cinemas (Glorietta 4, Greenbelt 3 and Trinoma) starting August 15, 2012. People Like Us is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International through Columbia Pictures.

Excited for Grimm Season 2

Saturday, August 04, 2012 0 Comments

We’re just days away from the season 2 premiere of Grimm, a show that I just can’t get enough of. In fact I’ve already re-watched the first season twice. I’ve also read over the Grimm Essentials section from the shows official site on NBC quite a few times. I’ve been trying to take in all the information I can get about all the fascinating creatures in the world of Grimm (at least he ones shown in season one so far). All that reading just made more excited for season 2.

I’m writing in a spoiler warning though, I’m about to list a few things that I’m looking forward to in Grimm Season 2. If you haven’t seen or finished season 1 yet, then it’s high time to do just that.

Kate Beckinsale in Total Recall

Saturday, August 04, 2012 , 0 Comments

Just last weekend I was watching Whiteout which starred Kate Beckinsale and Gabriel Macht. I had remarked that most of Kate Beckinsale’s roles in movies she’s been in were very strong women. Her characters had always been on the side of good, in the remake of Total Recall however, she plays the villain. For the first time ever we’ll see Kate Beckinsale try to outwit and kill the lead characters in the movie. The movie is the story of how a company named Rekall provides services to citizens who want to alter their perception of reality by making dreams as part of their memories. The film features how a seemingly ordinary factory worker Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell) finds his life turned upside down when he discovers his then alternate life.

My initial impression was that this was just a Kitkat-flavored ice cream cone thus making it ordinary. I was wrong though.

After you’ve finished off the ice cream, guess what you’ll find inside...a Kitkat bar. This truly brings meaning to the phrase - saving the best for last. The Kitkat cone is only available in certain parts of Europe, Japan and Malaysia. [SOURCE]

Does the LTFRB complaint line really work?

I work full-time on weekdays in Makati. I love working in this city and being the business district of the country, everything's a hustle and bustle here from Monday to Friday. The one thing that I don't like about this is the horrible traffic that I have to go through each day during the evening rush hour. It takes me 2 1/2 hours just to get home to Antipolo. Without traffic, it's just a 45 minute drive..even less if I drive really fast. Due to the bad traffic, I sometimes opt to stay at the office late to spare myself (and my car) the hassle.

It's been raining for the past few days and like everyone, as soon as office hours end, I didn't want to stay out on the road too late for fear of getting stranded in hard pouring rain. The other day, I did not take my usual route going home. I usually pass Paseo de Roxas. That night, I passed Buendia. It was a crawl as usual heading to the direction of the intersection of Makati Avenue where the stoplight was. It was bumper to bumper traffic and add to the fact that there was a bus stop at Petron building and a side street that merges into Buendia, well you get the picture. So there I was waiting patiently in my lane for the car in front of me to move. I was listening to a very good audiobook that time so I wasn't as irritated with the traffic as much.

How to view Instagram using your Computer

Follow my blog with Bloglovin
At certain points during my lunch break, I take the time to spend some 5 minutes just browsing through my Instagram feed. There’s some really entertaining photos from the folks in my timeline and some surprising ones that can sometimes make me think if those photos were really taken with a phone. They were just so good. However, if you’re running low in terms of battery juice and by some unlucky chance forgot to bring your charger with you, then here are some options where you can still keep yourself up to date with your Instagram timeline by browsing it on your PC.

Instagrille

Instagrille is a desktop client that you can download for free in your computer. It syncs your Instagram account by an easy log in. Take note though, that installing Instagrille automatically requires you to install Pokki too. It’s an app platform (kinda like Adobe Air) which has a handful list of other useful apps you can use. The Pokki app browser reminds me so much of the Chrome Web Store and functions in the same way too. You can try it out by clicking on the download link HERE.
