Ruby Sparks Movie Review

Thursday, September 27, 2012 , 0 Comments

Imagine being a writer whose writing is so good that for some miracle, your characters come to life. While the concept is not new to Hollywood, Ruby Sparks does offer a unique and quirky charm to it. A bit of trivia first before I launch into my movie review:
  • Zoe Kazan the actress who plays the character of Ruby Sparks is also the one who wrote the story for this movie
  • Paul Dano, the lead actor is her boyfriend in real life.

With that being said, now it’s obvious why their chemistry on-camera felt so real and these two talented actors carried the weight of the movie and did a good job with it.

First Look: The Wolverine

Thursday, September 27, 2012 , 0 Comments

Hugh Jackman is looking good and buff in this new teaser image released for The Wolverine, a movie that fans can look forward to seeing on July 25, 2013. Now I know that it’s still a long way off but trust that we’ll know more in the coming months what this movie is all about. For now, it is known that the movie will be based from the comic book arc, with Logan as an eternal warrior in Japan. A mysterious figure from his past will trigger a life-changing event. Adamantium claws and Samurai steel clash in the upcoming movie The Wolverine. Are you psyched?

How Having a Dog Teaches you Lessons in Compassion and Loyalty

Tuesday, September 25, 2012 0 Comments

I recently saw a disturbing photo on my Facebook feed of what I mistakenly thought was a dog's dead carcass. It looked that way because it was shrunken almost skin and bones. I normally dread finding these kind of photos on my feed because it just tugs at my heart. It also makes me hate how little human beings care for these wonderful animals. Lastly, I hate knowing what tortures and cruelty the dog was subjected to. However, after seeing the comments from my friends, I soon found out that the dog was Patrick, a pitbull who was rescued from near-death and was now an advocate for pet abuse.

memorable-dogs
This is Patrick now, healthy and very loved.
The incredible story of Patrick touched so many lives. They even held prayer vigils while he was being treated. It looked forlorn and hopeless because of the condition that he was found but Patrick was truly a miracle. He had an incredible will to live. His Facebook page is a testament of how much people still cared and that people were still compassionate to helpless animals. The photo album in his page showed pictures of his recovery and going through it brought tears to my eyes. Bless the people who nursed him back to health.

Warner Bros. Unveils the Main Poster for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Monday, September 24, 2012 , 0 Comments

Earlier this year, it has been revealed that the movie adaptation for The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien was going to be shown as a trilogy. The man behind this soon to be masterpiece is also the same man behind The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy. Using the same ingenuity and creative spark we’ve seen in the earlier films, The Hobbit promises to be just as extravagant and brilliant. The movie follows the adventures of Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) when he suddenly found himself on a quest to reclaim the Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the clutches of the fearsome dragon Smaug.

For fans who’ve read the book, the story of The Hobbit is as synonymous to the name of Smaug as well. Bilbo is accompanied by Gandalf the Grey and the company of Thorin Oakenshield. Here we’ll also see his first encounter with the creature Gollum and the One Ring. Sir Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf and Christopher Lee as Saruman. The first part of the trilogy will be released in the Philippines on December 13, 2012.

The third season of Pretty Little Liars is on break but with just a few days before the Halloween special, I’m just counting the days before the show resumes again. Ten episodes in and there’s already too much that went on and too many questions to ask. Before the show resumes though, here’s a little something that I did using Polyvore to showcase some fashion sets inspired by the main characters of the show.

Hotel Transylvania Movie Posters

Wednesday, September 19, 2012 , , 0 Comments

On the 28th, you’ll get to see the monsters we’ve come to know and love from the classic novels. Hotel Transylvania is an interesting and fun take on the life and relationship of Dracula and his daughter Mavis. The movie tells of how terrified these monsters are of humans just as we are terrified of them. No matter what though, we share the same instincts when it comes to loving and protecting those who are most important to us. You can read about my review for the movie HERE.

Movie Review: Hotel Transylvania

Tuesday, September 18, 2012 , 0 Comments

Most depictions of Dracula show him as a vicious monster but in the movie Hotel Transylvania the viewers will see Dracula in a whole new light. The legend of Dracula and his reputation is somewhat re-written here plus the other superstars in the monster world.
hotel-transylvania-movie-review
PLOT
Dracula (Adam Sandler) has created a safe haven for all kinds of monsters in his hotel, Hotel Transylvania. He has one rule, no humans are allowed. The hotel is also the venue for the upcoming 118th birthday of his daughter Mavis (Selena Gomez). Dracula is somewhat a very protective dad and he does everything that he can think of to shelter his daughter from human contact. However, Jonathan (Andy Samberg) accidentally stumbles into the hotel but was luckily intercepted at the entrance by Dracula himself. Dracula then disguises him as a monster and coerces him to keep the secret. Mavis fall in-love with Jonathan but soon everyone finds out that he’s human. Dracula must now choose which is more important, the sanctuary that his hotel provides or the happiness of his daughter.

The Sketchbook that Travelled Around the World

Tuesday, September 18, 2012 0 Comments

As an art lover and one working the field itself, I’m always appreciative of joint art projects that not only bring artists together for a good cause but also produces great art. Sketchtravel was an ambitious project which entails one red sketchbook to be passed from one artist to another through 12 countries for 4 years. It involved the work of 71 illustrators, animators and comic book artists. [You can view the complete list of artists here] The proceeds from the book goes to the charity Room to Read.

On Book 8 and Counting

Sunday, September 16, 2012 , 0 Comments

I now officially like two Harrys as my favorite wizards of all time. One is the famous Harry Potter and the other is a less-known but the amazingly all-powerful and wise-cracking Harry Dresden. Jim Butcher created a character that’s not overly cliché. The Dresden Files is kinda like your crime show and with Dresden as a wizard spy. The cases he’s working on just gives you a unique take on the wonderful creatures in Dresden’s world. They are both wonderful and sinister at the same time. However, there are no spell classes here; Harry Dresden takes on adventures that are often a matter of life and death. The trademark that I like with Harry Dresden is that he often has the presence of mind to utter a humorous quip even when he’s in mortal peril. It’s rare when a book compels me to laugh out loud and books in this series have never failed to do so.

Just who is Harry Dresden anyway?
Harry Dresden is the only practicing professional wizard in Chicago. Unlike other wizards though, he also offers his talents for hire. As a part-time job, he also is a consultant for the special investigations unit of the Chicago PD led by Karrin Murphy.

How to Create Your Own Google Chrome Theme

Sunday, September 16, 2012 , 0 Comments

Google Chrome has been my browser of choice for several years now and for me, it’s still the best browser that I’ve used so far. I love that you can install several extensions to it to make your browsing experience much more efficient while not hampering its performance. I also make it a point to change its themes once in a while to make my browsing more visually easy to my eyes. I have published several posts in this blog about my selected themes from the Web Store but I’ve always wanted to make my own. This time with the help of an extension, I was able to and it’s simple enough to do.

Before I launch into a step by step look into creating your own Google Chrome theme, here’s a rundown of the previous Chrome theme selections I have posted in this blog.

Steps to Create your Own Google Chrome Theme

First and foremost you have to install this extension, My Chrome Theme to your Chrome browser.

If you’re a woman on the go and usually too caught up in the day with too many work tasks, ideally you wouldn’t want to be bothered with constantly re-applying your make-up throughout the day. Here are some tricks you can try for your make-up last longer without buying too many expensive products.
  • Apply moisturizer on your face before putting on foundation. This also helps to hydrate the skin.

The New Wreck-It Ralph Trailer

Friday, September 14, 2012 , , 0 Comments

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ new 3d adventure comedy has been dubbed the movie made for gamers. Wreck-It Ralph has received a positive feedback so far from the gaming community but we might have to wait a wee bit more before we get to see it on the big screen. It’s slated to open in Digital 3d and regular theaters on October 31, right in time for Halloween.

Ladies you can Win Shoes from Blacklotus Corner!

Wednesday, September 12, 2012 0 Comments

When it comes to shopping, I have a special weakness for shoes. No matter how bad my day is, take me shoe shopping and I’ll immediately light up and I’ll be sure to be coming home with not only one shopping bag. I’m very particular with the shoe styles that catch my eye too. It has to have a nice shape because my feet are slim and wouldn’t look good in some shoe styles. Next the shoes should have excellent quality, sturdy, has a very nice color and design (of course!) and outstanding comfort.

Blacklotus Corner is an online shop that sells Philippine-made shoes and bags. They’re essentially known for their classic Espadrilles. They also join in bazaars. On September 28, 2012, you’ll be able to find them at the Filipinas Heritage Library at the Ayala Triangle in Makati City, where they’ll be joining the La Feria de Setiembre Bazaar. You’ll be able to shop your heart out from 4pm to 12 midnight.

What I like about the shoes from Blacklotus Corner are the hand-painted shoes. They’re available for the Classic Espadrilles shoe styles and the designs are way too amazing. Take a look at how these shoes will be able to bring the artsy side in you.  Take a look at these: [You can view more of the available shoes at their online gallery]

The Third Trailer for Twilight Breaking Dawn pt 2

Wednesday, September 12, 2012 , , 0 Comments

I’m sure all eyes will be on Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson as they begin their promotions for the last installment of the movie franchise Twilight. In light of the recent scandal that broke out with Kristen and Snow White and the Hunstman director Rupert Sanders, it is now a question of whether Kristen and Rob will still be able to hold the loyalty and interest of fans who were more than shocked at the indiscretion. Well, we shall see soon.

In the meantime though, expectations are also high with Twilight Breaking Dawn pt. 2. Will it be the epic conclusion that fans are clamoring for?

What to expect in Fringe Season Five

Tuesday, September 11, 2012 0 Comments

Fringe fans have less that 3 weeks to go to have a catch-up marathon of the previous seasons of Fringe. Despite having a strong fan base, Fringe will have a final run of 13 episodes before we say goodbye to it for good. I’m gonna miss Walter and his weird food cravings. Fringe Season Five will air starting September 28th and do I dare say that anticipation is slowly building up. Writers and producers of the series have restlessly assured fans that the plot won’t beat around the bush, meaning that there will be no filler episodes just straight up down to the nitty gritty to have the final send off that the series deserves. It’s good to know that any lingering questions that haven’t been answered in Season Four will finally have their own conclusions as well.

Fringe-Season-Five
In the next paragraphs, I’ll be writing about what I’m pondering about what Fringe Season Five will be about so if you haven’t seen Season Four, there might be some spoilers for you here.

Selena Gomez as Mavis in Hotel Transylvania

Monday, September 10, 2012 , 0 Comments

In Columbia Pictures’ upcoming 3d animated comedy, Hotel Transylvania, Selena Gomez provides the voice of Mavis, Dracula’s precious daughter. Dracula himself is voiced by Adam Sandler. Mavis is headstrong and smart and at 118 years, she’s the only capable of keeping her dad in check. Dracula in turn would do anything to keep his daughter happy. As with all teenagers, Mavis longs to see the world and see what outside life has in store for her, she has been cooped up in Hotel Transylvania for far too long.

As seen on Pinterest

I’ve been using Pinterest for a while now and it’s easy to lose a few hours just browsing through the thousands of pins that people put in it during the course of the day. It’s a good source of inspiration, DIY instructions, trends and quotes.  Here are some that I found particularly interesting.

JBL on Tour IBT Speaker Review

Sunday, September 09, 2012 0 Comments

Sunday is that day of the week that I usually do personal errands and chores. Just like last week, I washed my car first thing in the morning. I had the music blasting out loudly with the JBL on Tour IBT speakers. This is what I love about JBL speakers, no matter how loud I crank up the volume, music still comes out crisp and clear.
jbl-on-tour-speaker-review
The JBL on Tour IBT speaker is a pretty small speaker. You wouldn’t believe that music THAT loud was coming from such a small thing, at only about 160cm diameter. The design of the speaker is pretty simple, much like an embossed disk. It’s quite sturdy owing to the rubber pads that it has on its underside. This will prevent it from accidentally slipping off a surface. It’s pretty easy to use, you don’t need complicated instructions to have it up and going.

The Watch Movie Review

Saturday, September 08, 2012 , 0 Comments

Ben Stiller’s new movie The Watch can be likened to movies like Hot Tub Time Machine and Dude, Where’s my Car? This sci-fi comedy also stars other big names with comedic talents like Vince Vaughn and Jonah Hill. Each of them adding their own trademark acting and flair into the film. When you do decide to watch it this weekend, it’s best to leave your brains out the theater doors, you won’t need them for the nonsensical humor in the movie. Despite the weak opening and initial bad reviews that I’ve seen, The Watch won’t fail to give you a considerable amount of laughter and snorts from all the hilarious antics displayed in the film.
the-watch-movie-review
The Watch started when Evan (Ben Stiller) initiated a neighborhood watch group in response to the death of Antonio Guzman, an employee at Costco where he works in. The positive response that he hoped for was disappointing because only 3 people showed up – Bob (Vince Vaughn), Franklin (Jonah Hill) and Jamarcus (Richard Ayoade). And so the neighborhood watch was born but it started to be seen as a joke. However, their nightly patrols revealed a more sinister plot against Glenwood that is of Alien origin and they felt compelled to act against them.

Katy Perry: Part of Me Movie Review

Wednesday, September 05, 2012 , 0 Comments

So far, this is one of the movies I’ve watched this year that I surprisingly liked so much. Believe me, no one is more surprised than I am. I thought for sure that it will just be like one of those concert features with a mash of concert performances and backstage events. Well yes, it had those but Katy Perry Part of Me movie turned out to be so much more.

katy-perry-movie-review
Katy Perry had her California Dreams Tour documented on film and filmmakers followed her around for most of the year to record each significant onstage and offstage in Katy Perry’s life. It was a very monumental year for her with some key highs and lows and they were all captured on film.

Awesome Bento Boxes

Wednesday, September 05, 2012 0 Comments

Last week when my sister was home for the weekend, she showed me some pictures of the lunches that she made on her phone. I was pleasantly surprised at how creative my sister was becoming. She’s actually doing some good bento box food art of her own. Naturally it reminded me of a site that I came across a while back. It’s called Lunchbox Awesome. From the title of the website itself, you’ve already got a clue about what it’s about however, you’ll be amazed at how awesome the bento boxes are. If I had lunches like this, I’d be a little apprehensive eating it. They’re truly works of art.

ParaNorman Movie Review

Tuesday, September 04, 2012 , 0 Comments

Norman (Kodi Smit-McPhee) was a kid who loved horror movies and had the ability to talk to dead people Naturally, he began to be regarded as the neighborhood weird kid because people do not understand anything that he does. The movie mainly centered on three underlying themes - bullying, what's it like to be different and how people react when they fear the unknown. Although the movie is meant for a younger audience, curiosity towards topics like witchcraft and the witchcraft can engage young kids to look up this time in history.

ParaNorman-movie-review
Norman can talk to dead people and see them. It is this ability that he found himself shouldering the task of keeping a centuries old witch's curse from destroying the town that he lives in. It's hard when nobody believes in what you can do and more so that he himself didn't know what can be done. However, after finally understanding what had transpired in the past, he knew. With a brave act, not only did Norman save the entire town but he also gained the respect of his family and friends.
