It's Fun Being a Girl at the BDJ Box Event

Monday, October 29, 2012 0 Comments

I got pretty excited when I got the invite to attend the first unveiling of the BDJ BOX, another great creative project from the wonderful women of Belle de Jour. If that name sounds familiar, it should. I've been raving about the amazing Belle de Jour planners for so long now and I can't wait to be using next year's planner too.
BDJ-Box

So what is a BDJ BOX you say? Well I was pretty curious too. Before we ladies at the event found out, we were treated with these scrumptious meals from Slices at Bonifacio High Street.

Looper Movie Review

Monday, October 29, 2012 , 0 Comments

I went to see Looper because every single geeky friend of mine was raving about and it had been awhile since my last sci-fi film. I've been reading too many crime fiction lately and I was having a bit of a burnout. Like every time travel film, Looper has enough paradoxes and loopholes that can give you a headache. Well that's the fun of sci-fi films right, you can theorize all you want and no one would really know the right answer.

Argo Movie Review

Sunday, October 28, 2012 , 0 Comments

After suffering a bit of a lull in his career, I think Ben Affleck made it good for his name with this film. Argo makes it clear that Ben Affleck has more to offer Hollywood other than his acting talents. Argo is about a super secret cooperative mission between the US and Canada to extract six fugitive American diplomatic personnel out of Iran.
argo-movie-review

For the first few scenes of the film I already was admiring the authenticity of it. Obviously the film was well-researched because it mostly stayed true to the time setting, the clothing and man the hairstyles speak volumes themselves. The film even had a grainy retro film to it. The plot may be too simple but the fact that it was based from true events made the seemingly impossible mission more heroic.

Android Apps That I Use Daily

There's no denying that twiddling around with my Android phone is part of my daily routine. The few times that I had left my phone at home was a bizarre experience for me. I felt incomplete and utterly useless without it. Yes, I had become THAT dependent on my phone. I'd like to share with you the everyday apps that I use for various tasks within the day.

aCalendar - Android Calendar
One thing that I hate is forgetting what I have on my schedule. This app is synced with Google Calendar where I usually input my commitments and meetings. You can choose which size of widget to use on your home screen. I like the 4x4 one in weekly view. It gives a notification sound for every calendar entry. I prefer this over the stock app because it looks so much better.

What’s your Nail Color Personality?

Saturday, October 27, 2012 , 0 Comments

One of the fun things about being a girl is being able to paint our fingernails in every color possible. The trend nowadays are the uber creative nail art that are featured in magazines and beauty blogs. However, for this post, let’s just go to the more basic ones, solid and metallic nail colors. Personally, my nail polish preferences are usually in the color range of purple, pink, red and mauve. The next time you’re choosing which nail color to buy, here’s a fun and handy guide that’s associated with our nail color choices.
nail-color-psychology

What’s you nail color personality?

RED POLISH
Most powerful women, if you may have noticed, have on bold red nails because they’re the ultimate statement for sending out the signal that they’re confident. Having them on also means that you’re in touch with your sultry personality. Red also is the color to mean an adventurous, daring and energetic personality.

Lawless Movie Review

Wednesday, October 24, 2012 , 0 Comments

movie-reviewI've never had much of a liking for gangster movies because they were too heavy with death and violence. For Lawless though, I made an exception. After all, Tom Hardy and Shia LeBeouf were in it. True enough, Lawless had all the elements of a gangster film in it: guns, lots of blood, high testosterone and the fight to the death for the principles that they believed in.
lawless-movie-review

PLOT
Lawless is based from the true story of the Bondurant brothers who made a name for themselves in a little town in Virginia during the Prohibition in the US. Just a quick history lesson here, the Prohibition was the time in American history when it was deemed illegal to manufacture, sell and transport alcohol. The Bondurant brothers (Forrest, Howard and Jack) were in the business of making and selling moonshine which was also called white lightning, hooch and Tennessee white whiskey. All you really need to know is that it's 190 proof (95% alcohol). I probably won't even last long after taking a few sips of that.

A Peek at the Just Released Iron Man 3 Trailer

Tuesday, October 23, 2012 , , 0 Comments

Do you remember the banter between Captain America and Tony Stark during one of the scenes in Marvel’s The Avengers movie? The Cap questioned what would become of Tony when his powerful suit is taken away from him. In Iron Man 3, Tony will face the very same question as he struggled to get revenge on his enemies who destroyed his personal life and to protect the people closest to him.

The Ostrich Pillow

Tuesday, October 23, 2012 , 0 Comments

Aside from a scrumptious meal, another thing that I look forward to during lunch is my regular 20 minute powernap. These are incredibly refreshing especially after going through a stressful to-do list in the morning. This is what the designers from Kawamura-Ganjavian must’ve been thinking of when they designed the ostrich pillow.

ostrich-pillow
Taking inspiration from the way the Ostrich buries its head in sand, the Ostrich pillow more or less works the same way. It’s either that or they really just hold the value of a powernap in high regard.

The Zombie Teddy Bear: Not so Cute and Cuddly

Monday, October 22, 2012 0 Comments

Everything is really being zombified nowadays. Take a look at this zombie teddy bear for instance. Think a little kid would be scared of it? For some reason, it reminds me of Happy Tree Friends. I love the attention to detail, the exposed intestines, the standard ribcage and the bone stub on his right foot. People seem to have a positive response to this toy because upon checking the product page, it’s currently out of stock. Let’s hope they produce more soon.

Giving the Mechromancer Class a Spin in Borderlands 2

Monday, October 22, 2012 , 0 Comments

My Sundays are usually evenly spaced out with a stack of things to-do which varies from chores, to blogging some posts and doing my hobbies. Sometimes when I just want to just relax, I watch a marathon of episodes from really good TV series. Other times however, I play away several hours playing games on the PC. What’s keeping me geeked out nowadays is Borderlands 2.

borderlands-mechromancer
Borderlands 2 is one of the most hyped up games this year boasting of numerous side quests, an impressive storyline, a battalion of new monsters to fight and a humongous stash of weapons to loot and hoard. After playing for a time now, it looks like Borderlands 2 can easily surpass the success of the first game.

The Excitement of Owning a New Home

Sunday, October 21, 2012 0 Comments

For several weeks now, just before going to sleep, I’ve been watching episodes of Will & Grace. I do love this show. In one episode, both of them agreed to buy a new apartment because the current one that they lived in was getting too cramped for both of their lifestyles. There were also some issues about privacy that came up. They have to schedule their dates so that they wouldn’t get in each other’s way. Earlier in the seasons, there was even a spat about the bathroom space.
own-a-new-home

So when they found the perfect apartment with lots of space, I couldn’t help but feel their jubilation coming across the screen. Their eyes lit up and they started to jump up and down. Of course, this show was set in New York (Chicago foreclosure listings are found here). From an interior designer’s perspective, the apartment was gorgeous. It had lots of open space and provided just the right amount of privacy for both of them to be able to live the same lifestyle. It’s also perfect for a contemporary-themed interior.

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen Movie Review

Sunday, October 21, 2012 , 0 Comments

movie-reviewImagine having unlimited financial resources to draw on to cater to your every whim. This was my initial thought about Sheikh Muhammed’s (Amr Waked) wish to introduce Salmon fishing in the Yemen. I shared the same reaction that Ewan McGregor’s character had when he was unwillingly signed for the project. In the end, the venture resulted in so much more. This movie is really a light romantic comedy with touches of witty British humor.

Tom Hardy is Back in Lawless

Wednesday, October 17, 2012 , 0 Comments

From the success of him playing the role of the villainous Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, Tom Hardy is back as a ruthless gangster in Lawless. Looks like Tom Hardy is on a roll when in comes to playing the bad guy in movies. Let’s see if he can strike fear on-screen once again.

Lawless will be shown exclusively at Ayala Malls Cinemas (Glorietta 4, Greenbelt 3 and Trinoma) starting October 24. The movie is an adaptation of the novel The Wettest County in the World by Matt Bondurant. It centers on the story of the Bondurant Brothers who sold moonshine in Virginia during the Prohibition in the United States.

What I Would Bring in a Zombie Apocalypse

Halloween is very near and the new season for The Walking Dead is here and it has gotten me in the mood for zombies. I’ve read an article recently on the internet about a zombie apocalypse and it gave me an idea for this post. Well, what if a zombie apocalypse happens in our lifetime? There are too many books and Hollywood movies about this that you already have an idea of what I’m talking about. Think abandoned buildings, citizens up in arms and zombies scattered everywhere. Frankly, I’m more worried how everyone (especially me) will stay clean. All the actors in the movies look so sticky! :P

Just for fun, I’ve made a list of the things that I would like to have with me in case of a zombie apocalypse.

Max Brook’s The Zombie Survival Guide
For something like this, I’d leave it to the experts. If you haven’t read this book, you should. It has everything you need to know about the types of zombies, which weapons are best and survival tactics. If you’ve seen Zombieland, then a working knowledge of zombie movies is also needed.

Meet the Level 1 Characters of Wreck-It Ralph

Friday, October 12, 2012 , , 0 Comments

After spending so much time being the bad guy, Ralph (voice of John C. Reilly) has finally had it. He’s done being overshadowed by the win of the good guy who gets to save the day. To change this, he embarks on a quest to prove that he’s got what it takes to be a hero. It had been recently revealed that the quest will involve four main levels, just like in a video game.

Level 1 is the Game Central Station where it is populated by the following characters:
  • Wreck-It Ralph Bad Guys Finish Last
Here’s where our lead character resides. He’s the bad guy in the arcade game Fix-it Felix Jr. He’s a heavy-handed wrecking riot with a heart and he’s struggling to love his job when everyone seems to hate him for it.

New October Book Reads

Wednesday, October 10, 2012 0 Comments

While browsing through the October newsletter from Goodreads, I’ve made my picks from the list of new book releases.  These include This Book is Full of Spiders by David Wong, Son by Lois Lowry, Death: Deluxe Edition by Neil Gaiman and The Mark of Athena by Rick Riordan.  Among the books I’ve just mentioned, I’ve already finished The Mark of Athena yesterday and due to a misconception in my part, I was surprised that the Heroes of Olympus series was going to be in five parts. I had the impression that it was just a trilogy. You can imagine my surprise when at the last chapter of the book, I found that there’s more of the story to be told in the next books.  Well here’s to waiting around for book four!

Photobucket
The Mark of Athena (Heroes of Olympus #3)
by Rick Riordan
(from the back cover)
Annabeth is terrified. Just when she’s about to be reunited with Percy—after six months of being apart, thanks to Hera—it looks like Camp Jupiter is preparing for war. As Annabeth and her friends Jason, Piper, and Leo fly in on the Argo II, she can’t blame the Roman demigods for thinking the ship is a Greek weapon. With its steaming bronze dragon masthead, Leo’s fantastical creation doesn’t appear friendly. Annabeth hopes that the sight of their praetor Jason on deck will reassure the Romans that the visitors from Camp Half-Blood are coming in peace.
And that’s only one of her worries. In her pocket Annabeth carries a gift from her mother that came with an unnerving demand: Follow the Mark of Athena. Avenge me. Annabeth already feels weighed down by the prophecy that will send seven demigods on a quest to find—and close— the Doors of Death. What more does Athena want from her?
Annabeth’s biggest fear, though, is that Percy might have changed. What if he’s now attached to Roman ways? Does he still need his old friends? As the daughter of the goddess of war and wisdom, Annabeth knows she was born to be a leader, but never again does she want to be without Seaweed Brain by her side.

Figaro Introduces Lunch Meals

Wednesday, October 10, 2012 0 Comments

Mention the name Figaro and what comes immediately to mind are their delicious coffee concoctions which is ultimately what the brand is very known for. Recently though, they’ve expanded their menu to include a line up of lunch set meals. The lunch meals are available at Figaro stores from 11am to 2pm. The idea and concept might be good to make Figaro the place to have a casual lunch with friends or colleagues.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower Movie Review

Monday, October 08, 2012 , 0 Comments

I was extremely excited to see this movie for two reasons: One is that I absolutely loved the book and two, Logan Lerman was in it. I have a teensy weensy crush on him since seeing him in the Percy Jackson movie. I also knew full well that book adaptations have a 50/50 chance of staying true to the book and I tried to brace myself for the disappointment.

perks-of-being-wallflower-movie-review
What made the book great were the humanity and the raw emotions from Charlie. It’s amazing how Charlie (Logan Lerman) kept everything so innocent and simple at the same time. The book was a picture of the struggles of a teen that was experiencing life for the first time with a positive outlook despite a traumatic past. It was also how Charlie was rescued from anonymity by his friendship with Sam (Emma Watson) and Patrick (Ezra Miller).

Ted Movie Review

Friday, October 05, 2012 , 0 Comments

If you’ve seen episodes of Family Guy and American Dad then you’re no stranger to Seth MacFarlane’s work which I like to call is “brilliantly dirty comedy.” Watching Ted is like watching episodes of those adult cartoons which I’m happy to say is littered with lines of Seth MacFarlane’s trademark humor. He also provides the voice of Ted, the teddy bear, in this movie by the way.

Best Rainy Photography

Wednesday, October 03, 2012 0 Comments

It’s raining pretty strong outside and as of this morning, the weatherman said that there’s a storm looming over the country. It doesn’t have strong winds but it does carry with it a lot of rain. While I deem the weather to be best spent in bed, I’m now currently at work. Thanks to the color coding which had me on the road as early as 5:30am, I am missing my warm bed terribly. Oh well, as a result, I’ve browsed for some photos at Flickr.com to make this post. I haven’t done a post like this for such a long time and I do miss getting lost in gallery after gallery of great photos in Flickr. True to what’s happening outside, here’s a roundup of the best rainy photography on Flickr as of yet (the ones which are part of the creative commons search).

Emily Blunt and Ewan McGregor Stars in Salmon Fishing in Yemen

Wednesday, October 03, 2012 0 Comments

Two of the stars I admire the most are starring in a movie called Salmon Fishing in Yemen. The romantic comedy brings together Ewan McGregor and Emily Blunt where they pair up in order to fulfill the dream of a visionary sheik (Amr Waked) who believes that the peaceful pastime of salmon fishing can bring an extraordinary richness to the lives of his people. The catch is, he wants to bring the sport to the not so fish-friendly desert. Will the pair be able to make the impossible possible? Salmon Fishing in Yemen is directed by Lasse Hallstrom, the genius who also brought us Chocolat.

A Website to Improve your Grammar

Tuesday, October 02, 2012 , , 0 Comments

Back in high school, one of my favorite subjects was English and when I started to become serious with blogging, it was only then that I became thankful that I paid close attention during classes or else the grammar nazis would be hot behind my trail. I’m not claiming to be an expert in grammar but what I do know has served me well. Each time I publish a post, I consider it part of my learning experience and heavy training in grammar. It’s great when there are sites on the internet that can serve as virtual classrooms.

Road to Grammar is a site which provides interactive quizzes to help refresh your knowledge of grammar lessons. The site is simple enough to navigate with a simple white and orange theme. Here’s how the welcome page looks like. There’s a series of topics for the grammar quizzes you can choose from and each has a series of questions to test your grammar.

The Hunting Party Movie Review

Monday, October 01, 2012 , 0 Comments

The Hunting Party was made five years ago and I’ve only finally seen it two weeks ago. It’s a movie about a disgruntled journalist trying to re-claim his reputation by capturing the most wanted man in Bosnia. I usually stay away from heavy drama war movies which I presumed The Hunting Party to be but instead it’s an insightful take on war which was made a bit lighter by the subtle humour provided by the characters of Duck and Benjamin Strauss. It also was an unreal insider look at how journalists risk their lives when covering a story amidst a war stricken country.
