Dots for the New Year

Monday, December 30, 2013 0 Comments

Here in the Philippines, it has always been customary to be wearing anything polka dot for the New Year. It comes with the belief that the circular pattern resembling coins will bring prosperity. Along with that tradition, it is also considered calling in good fortune to be jingling coins inside pockets as the clock strikes midnight to welcome the New Year. Well, with that in mind, check out my latest creations from Polyvore, inspired by nothing else but the humble polka dot.

See Emma Stone in this New Trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Monday, December 30, 2013 , , 0 Comments

When it was announced before that there was going to be a reboot of the entire Spider-Man movie franchise, fans expressed their serious doubts especially when the announcement of who would play Peter Parker came to be. Now though, Andrew Garfield is well received as Spider-Man and his real-life significant other, Emma Stone plays opposite him as Gwen Stacy. Together they make the cutest couple that all we can just say is, Mary Jane who?

Liven up Dull Hair with L’Oreal Paris Extraordinary Oil

Sunday, December 29, 2013 , 0 Comments

Late this year, I traded in my curly hair for a short bob. My hair is not naturally curly but I did enjoy having digi-permed hair for more than two years. I miss it especially because it was easy to style. After shower, I just put in a bit of mousse and finger-style and I’m all set. Now with a shorter do and without having done any straightening or rebond, I have to allot a few minutes into my morning routine to blow it straight. I’m now so happy that I discovered the L’Oreal Paris Extraordinary Oil from the Exclusive L’Oreal Elite BDJ Box because it cuts my styling time by a lot and I get the hair look that I want without so much fuss.

My Love Affair with Matte Liquid Foundation

Sunday, December 29, 2013 , 0 Comments

Most people stay away from using liquid foundations for everyday use. They always give the impression that the look it provides is too heavily made-up for let’s say, just an ordinary day at the office. While I enjoy BB creams myself ever since they’ve been introduced and has now educated myself with all the beauty creams coming out of the market, I do want to vary my make-up routine from time to time.

After receiving the Max Factor Facefinity All Day Flawless 3-in-1 Foundation from the December Max Factor Exclusive BDJ Box, I had dared myself to try and wear it straight for a week at work. Now for me to like this product, I would review it based on three things – consistency, skin match and coverage.

Gone Home Game Review

Sunday, December 29, 2013 , , 0 Comments

The other night, I finished Gone Home, a game that was heralded for its innovative gameplay storytelling and was raved about by so many game critics. When I first saw it on Steam, it caught my eye because of two things:
  1. It had a purple graphic game banner
  2. Upon reading the game synopsis and the mystery that you are tasked to solve in the game, I was instantly interested.
I’ve always been a girl who was always lured by a good mystery and this kind was one that I couldn’t resist. Truthfully, when I started to actually play Gone Home, despite all the raves I’ve read, I wasn’t at all prepared for the gaming experience that I got from it.

Top 15 Hay Day Tips and Tricks

Wednesday, December 25, 2013 , , 0 Comments

As mentioned in my catch-up post, I’ve compiled my very own list of tips and tricks for Hay Day, the farming game that I’ve been addicted to for the past month. Since writing my initial play-through of the game late in November, my farm (which has had name changes as well) has evolved greatly. I am now a proud level 31 and excited to progress to level 32. I still have a long way to go to catch up to my level 50+ friends whose farms are like kingdoms. I kid you not! To date, I still can’t believe just how many of my Facebook friends play the game, and to think that I only discovered it by accident on the Google Play Store.

Find the Candy is a free online game that you can play right on your browser that I discovered this morning. It’s one of those browser games that I really wish they’d make a mobile version of. If you just want a casual game that’s uncomplicated and visually appealing, Find the Candy is a good game that you might want to try out.

Are you Ready for Another Barrymore-Sandler Teamup in Blended?

Monday, December 23, 2013 , , 0 Comments

Two of my favorite romcoms are The Wedding Singer and 50 First Dates, both featuring the love team-up of Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. There’s really just something on-screen that clicks between these two and it’s no surprise that they’ll try out for a third movie entitled Blended.

Debut of the New Godzilla Poster

Sunday, December 22, 2013 , 0 Comments

After teasing us last week with a trailer, the movie Godzilla makes waves once again with the debut of its new movie poster. Featured in the movie poster are the skydivers falling among the bomb-ridden skies to a burning city below. Unlike the most recent Godzilla film, this epic rebirth of Toho’s Godzilla, the world’s most famous monster will go against malevolent creatures brought about scientific experiments to save humanity’s very existence.

2013 Book Review #56 The Hostile Hospital by Lemony Snicket

Sunday, December 22, 2013 , 0 Comments

I’ve finally resumed reading A Series of Unfortunate Events with this eight book. I loved the movie and it still helps in making me visualize the characters as I read. I still can’t believe that this dark series has a young target audience. For what the Baudelaire children are always unfortunate enough to go through, some themes are sometimes more appropriate for adults.
hostile-hospital
In The Hostile Hospital, Violet, Sunny and Klaus are off to have another misadventure. After being on the open road for quite some time, they’ve finally managed to send a telegram to Mr. Poe. However, the Daily Punctilio had made it their headline to spread false news that the orphans were murderers. Afraid of being found out, they climbed into the van full of VFD people. VFD was short for Volunteers Fighting Disease.

Catching Up

Sunday, December 22, 2013 , 0 Comments

For the past months, I’ve written an average of 50 posts or more per month. No matter how busy I got, I made sure that I get out at least 3 to 4 posts per day. If you’ve noticed though, for this month alone, I barely got posts out and it’s already near the last week of the month and I’m nowhere near my 50 post quota. My blogging notebook had been unopened for days and my colored pens and highlighters have been set aside. I recognized that I was at a low point in my life. There was too much going on in my personal life that I found myself being dispassionate about the things that used to make me happy. Blogging was one of them. It’s been a really tough time in my life and in addition to the writer’s block, I’ve also gotten bit by the depression bug and I was chest-deep in my misery.
catching-up-quote
Since then, I’ve been making so many physical and emotional adjustments and had been going through the motions of daily life and performing tasks half-heartedly at work. I had so little to go on and I found no will to pick myself up.

Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar Teases with New Trailer

Tuesday, December 17, 2013 , , 0 Comments

Christopher Nolan takes us into an adventure into deep space with next year’s Interstellar. The award-winning director brings to life a script that he co-conceptualized with his brother Jonathan Nolan. It chronicles the accounts from a group of explorers who uses a newly discovered wormhole in order to find out the limitations of human space travel and to lessen the vast distances involved in space voyages.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Movie Review

Sunday, December 15, 2013 , 0 Comments

An epic closing for a great year in movies was The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Last Tuesday, I attended the premiere filled with fellow Tolkien fans and together we embarked on a journey through Middle-Earth. Having already watched the first film, we thought we already knew what to expect. We were wrong, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug was simply glorious on the IMAX screen and in HFR 3d. It’s just wow, simply wow.

Godzilla Thrills in This Teaser Trailer

Friday, December 13, 2013 , , 0 Comments

When the announcement came that the teaser trailer for Godzilla had finally arrived online, I couldn’t wait to see Aaron Taylor-Johnson who was starring in it. Truthfully, my only exposure to the Godzilla lore were those provided by the last recent movie starring Matthew Broderick and from tales told by friends. Godzilla is based from the original Toho “Godzilla” and I’m sure fans can’t wait to see the famous monster go head to head against malevolent creatures.

2013 Book Review #55 The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galbraith

Friday, December 13, 2013 , 0 Comments

There was such a buzz when it was revealed that this book was written by J.K. Rowling under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith. I admit that I didn’t hear about The Cuckoo’s Calling until I read that reveal in an online site. My initial experience with Casual Vacancy held me back at jumping at the chance of reading this book.

Her use of a pseudonym was quite surprising. I learned that the book was pre-released in Goodreads. Did she need the affirmation first while she tried her writing skills with the mystery and crime genre? Well, my curiosity finally got the better of me and acquired a copy to read.

Tucked among the garden shops along Katipunan Avenue Extension is a haven for bread lovers. It was my first time at Harina Artisan Bakery Cafe formerly known as Monsee’s one lazy Saturday afternoon. It’s location is not easy to miss because it is heralded by a red flag sign with the name of the cafe written in formal type.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Thrills in this Latest Trailer

Monday, December 09, 2013 , , 0 Comments

With a generally positive response in the reboot of the Spider-Man film franchise, Andrew Garfield once again takes on the role of Peter Parker and Spider-Man as he struggles with an inner battle with himself while trying to protect the people of New York. In The Amazing Spider-Man 2, there’s nothing comparable to a day swinging between skyscrapers, spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone) and fighting villains that threaten the city. However, two enemies have sworn to make his life a living hell.

2013 Book Review #54 Friendship Bread by Darien Gee

Sunday, December 08, 2013 , 0 Comments

How do you feel about chain letters? I used to participate in them a lot back in grade school but as far as fads go, everyone goes tired of it sooner or later. The giving of Amish Friendship bread worked like a chain letter in this book written by Darien Gee. What results is an extraordinary tale in which a simple bread touched so many lives in the small town of Avalon.

PLOT
Julia Evarts and her daughter Gracie received an anonymous loaf of Amish Friendship bread on their doorstep one day. Julie’s life is one that was touched with tragedy and betrayal and it was this similar life experience that enabled her to connect with newcomers Madeline and Hannah. As bread starters of the amish Friendship bread went around town, each chapter revealed a facet of each woman’s past. Little by little, their stories were told. The sleepy town of Avalon soon discovered the power of friendship, forgiveness and compassion.

The Wonders of Serums and Moisturizers

Sunday, December 08, 2013 , 0 Comments

What I love about getting a BDJ Box each month and also getting to attend special beauty events like the BDJ Soirees, is the chance to use new products that I previously didn’t know about. It’s always a delight to learn about the new beauty products and find out how to properly use them. Before, I only knew how to skin supple and hydrated by regularly including a facial moisturizer for my daily skin regimen. Then I discovered that serums are wonderful too, the Guerlain Super Aqua-Serum to be exact.

Greeks vs. Persians in this New 300:Rise of an Empire Trailer

Sunday, December 08, 2013 , , 0 Comments

When the movie 300 came out in theaters in 2006, we were all blown away by the unique graphical way that it was presented. It was when Zack Synder made his mark officially as one of the most creative directors in Hollywood today. This time around, he’s part of the consulting team behind the film adaptation of another Frank Miller graphic novel, Xerxes.

2013 Book Review #53: Geektastic by various authors

Friday, December 06, 2013 , 0 Comments

I was attracted with this book initially because of the cover and without looking at the title, it already appealed to the geeky and gamer part of me. The book Geektastic was promised to be written by fellow geeks. The array of YA authors who made up the list was impressive: M.T. Anderson, Libba Bray, Cassandra Clare, John Green, Tracy Lynn, Cynthia and Greg Leitich Smith, David Levithan, Kelly Link, Barry Lyga, Wendy Mass, Garth Nix, Scott Westerfield, Lisa Yee, and Sara Zarr. It already had me looking forward to what I would read inside.

Delivery Man Movie Review

Wednesday, December 04, 2013 , 0 Comments

The movie Delivery Man was based on the French-Canadian film “Starbuck”. It stars Vince Vaughn and truthfully, was one of the most inspiring and feel-good movies that I’ve seen this year. For a Vince Vaughn film, one might expect his usual comedic trademark but surprisingly, Delivery Man is very light and its humor is very subtle. That coupled with an effective cast and amusing play of personalities, Delivery Man has a unique kind of charm that will surely endear viewers and fans.

As I Lay Dying Movie Review

Monday, December 02, 2013 , 0 Comments

Have you noticed recently that more and more actors go into directing movies nowadays? The most recent one to do so is James Franco. In the movie As I Lay Dying he not only directs the film but also had a hand in writing the screenplay. The movie was based from the 1930 classic American novel of the same title written by William Faulkner.

How to Train your Dragon 2 Releases Teaser Poster

Friday, November 29, 2013 , 0 Comments

Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) and Toothless are back in How to Train your Dragon 2 from Dreamworks Animation and 20th Century Fox. I just love this teaser poster for the movie. Take note of Toothless’ piercing lime green eyes. Hiccup is far from the cowardly lad that we saw in the first film, here he is in complete leather armor.

More Farming Fun with Hay Day

Thursday, November 28, 2013 , , 0 Comments

When Farmville from Zynga was THE game to play on Facebook, I wasn’t swept along by the trend even though my friends kept sending me requests. I’m no stranger to farming games myself so I know just how addicting they can be and I didn’t want to say goodbye to an entire day of productivity by just playing. However, since I really haven’t played a farming game in a while, I decided to look for a free farming game on the Google Play Store. My first candidate was Hay Day.

2013 Book Review #52 A Study in Scarlet by Arthur Conan Doyle

Thursday, November 28, 2013 , 0 Comments

I'm a huge fan of the Sherlock Holmes movies and while I enjoyed them immensely especially with Robert Downey Jr. playing the role of Sherlock. I honestly cannot imagine anyone else playing the role. Anyway, I shamefully ventured to read my first Sherlock with this year's reading challenge. A Study in Scarlet was the book that gave way to the legend and hopefully get me interested enough to read through the entire series.

Get to Know the Wonders of Argan Oil

Thursday, November 28, 2013 , 0 Comments

The latest beauty product that has got everyone abuzz is Argan oil. It comes from the pressed nut of the Argan tree which is only found in Morocco. The fruit is only produced when the tree is 30 to 50 years old which makes the oil quite rare. This is why Argan oil is sometimes coined as “liquid gold” and a bit expensive. It’s proven to be quite effective for various beauty uses and can be used as an all-around oil for the body.

The Redemption of The Hunger Games Movie Franchise with Catching Fire

I still had high expectations though and I was crossing my fingers for them not to mess it up.

Unconventional Candle Scents

Monday, November 25, 2013 0 Comments

Just last week I was browsing the many candles at the home section of the department store. I remember wrinkling my nose and suppressing a sneeze as the scents of lavender, rose, vanilla and other candle scents threatened to overwhelm my olfactory sense. I finally settled on choosing an ocean breeze scented candle to light at my work desk. That’s what I remembered when I saw these unconventional candle scents made by Kathy Werking to celebrate the scents of the Commonwealth.
