New Character Posters from Oz the Great and Powerful

Tuesday, January 29, 2013 , 0 Comments

The next movie that I’m looking forward to see is Oz the Great and Powerful. It tells of the not so known story of Oscar Diggs (James Franco) who will be the great wizard as we know him in tales. He was a small town magician with dubious work ethics. When he was blown away in the land of Oz, he reveled in the life of a celebrity. Three witches were out to get him. Theodora, Evanora and Glinda doesn’t believe that he is the wizard that the people of Oz yearns for. Diggs was challenged to become a better man, does he really have what it takes?

Here are the newly released posters from Walt Disney Studios. Oz the Great and Powerful will be shown in Philippine theaters on March 7 in IMAX 3d, Digital 3d and regular theaters nationwide. [Click on the photos for a larger view]

Les Miserables Movie Review

Tuesday, January 29, 2013 , 0 Comments

It took me a while to write this review because watching the movie Les Miserables was a very unique experience for me. This review is written from the viewpoint of someone who hasn’t seen nor watched the musical before although On my Own was the very first piece that I learned to play on the keyboard. The movie was shown a few weeks late in Manila and by the time that it did, we already know that Anne Hathaway won the Best Supporting Actress at the Golden Globes and that the movie itself has won the Best Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical category. It was part of why I wanted to see the movie myself. I’m also an Anne Hathaway fan and I think she’s an awesome actress.

Alarm Droid App Review

Tuesday, January 29, 2013 , 0 Comments

With my ever so busy schedule, I usually go by with only about 4 hours of sleep. I know that it’s unhealthy but sometimes it can’t be helped. I’ve gone through several alarm clock apps and I’m happy to have found (finally!) something that wakes me up each morning. Alarm Droid is a free Android application that you can download from the Google Play Store for only 3MB.

Rodrigo Torres’ Cool Office Tools for Alessi

Monday, January 28, 2013 , 0 Comments

Behance is a very nice portfolio platform for aspiring designers to showcase their concepts and design ideas for the whole world. I’ve constantly stumbled upon works of great artists that have great potential. Such is the work of Rodrigo Torres when he designed these animal-themed office tools for Alessi. They caught my eye because of the originality and the simply flawless curves of the animal shapes.

If you’re a mom who’s having trouble having your kids eat some eggs for breakfast, here’s how to make the meal more fun. Have you considered getting some egg moulds? I’ve seen the one that makes an egg into a heart shape several years ago but these designs are sure to add a bit more quirk to a dull morning.

Talks of a Wicked Movie

Sunday, January 27, 2013 , 0 Comments

For the past month, I’ve gotten into the habit of tweaking my work playlist which enables me to finally sift through my massive song collection. A staple in that playlist is the soundtrack from Wicked the Musical. I’ve read the Gregory Maguire book from which it was based from but sadly I haven’t seen the musical yet. Wicked the Musical has won numerous awards like several Tony Awards and Grammy Awards. The original musical starred Idina Menzel as Elphaba and Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda and is much loved by critics and fans. No wonder it’s the 12th longest running Broadway show of all time. It has also earned a whopping $2B since its debut.
wicked-musical-stills-03
There’s no doubt that it’s been successful in Broadway, the next move therefore is to transition this award-winning musical into the big screen. Fans have much cause for celebration with this news. There have been several rumors before but it’s just now that the news is very much confirmed. I think this is influenced by the success of Les Miserables. What’s great is that Winnie Holzman will write the screenplay for the movie.

Loving a Healthy Snack: California Crunch Cassava Chips

Sunday, January 27, 2013 0 Comments

I’m sure you’ve noticed the growing trend of health conscious lifestyle coupled with the rise and ready availability of healthier food choices around. Before, if you go on a diet, one of the major unhealthy snacks that you’ll have to give up are chips, now it’s hardly the case. Here’s a wonderful find that I discovered while browsing the chips isle at the SM Hypermart in Megamall.
california-crunch-cassava-chips-02
Next time that you’re craving for chips, reach for this instead. The California Crunch Cassava Chips is a healthier option because it has 30% less fat than potato chips and has 0% cholesterol and transfat. It’s healthy as long as you observe the proper serving sizes for a snack. 2 bags full doesn’t count, remember that. Although I can totally understand if you slip up and eat a whole bag by yourself. It’s THAT good.

2013 Book Review #5 The Best of Archie Comics

Sunday, January 27, 2013 , 0 Comments

Late high school and during my early years in college, I used to collect a lot of Archie Comics. I would purposely set aside part of my allowance just so I could buy at least four comic books a month. Then the double digests became 12573049_zps6004018a.jpgthinner than they previously were and more stores began to be repeated in the digests. I stopped collecting then figuring then that I would probably pick up on this hobby again one day. Soon though, I discovered other reading genres and I forgot about my Archie’s. Reading through The Best of Archie Comics was a nice nostalgic kick and it made me remember the joy of opening through a new Archie comic book freshly bought from the bookstore.

The Best of Archie Comics is a compilation of 50 selected stories from the published comics which spans to around 70 years. It’s a nice chronological look at how the character designs evolved through the years. Obviously, the entire series that spanned for more than several years cannot be compiled into just one omnibus. So I’m hoping that they come up with more volumes in the coming years.

Trying out Photo Sphere

Have you tried to explore the panoramic feature of your smartphone's stock camera app if it has one? It's great for capturing shots of a great landscape right? When we had our company outing last December, I had the chance to use something much better. I tried out Photo Sphere which was released by Android last October as a mode for the camera app of the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. Here's my experience in using it.

How to Use the Photo Sphere

Launch the camera and choose the Photo Sphere mode. Make it a point that you're standing at a very good vantage point to do a 360 degree revolution as you take your photos.
 photo photosphere-10_zps507670d0.png
The camera will then enter a grid mode where blue buttons will guide you exactly where you should point your phone's camera at. The trick is doing this slowly and aligning the blue button smack in the middle of the circular guide.

A Look at Hitchcock

Thursday, January 24, 2013 , 0 Comments

Mention the name Alfred Hitchcock to any movie fanatic and it is almost synonymous with the words “suspense” and “thriller”. In the biopic Hitchcock though, we look behind the life of the master of suspense and see his explosive romance with wife and collaborator, Alma Reville. The movie’s plot takes place during the making and filming of the 1960s thriller masterpiece, Psycho. Psycho would then become one of the legendary benchmarks in the horror movie genre. Credit was given to Hitchcock but few realized that he had help from his wife.

Movie Preview: World War Z

Wednesday, January 23, 2013 , , 0 Comments

Among the fictional monsters, I’m least afraid of zombies because although they might look gory and nasty, they’re slow and one can easily outrun. A zombie hoard though is one other matter. They’re deadly when you’re backed into a corner. In World War Z though the zombies are darn fast. Running away may not be an option anymore. If we were in a zombie apocalypse and these are the zombies hunting us, the future is bleak indeed.

PLOT
World War Z is one of them one man saves the entire human race plots. A UN employee named Gerry Lane played by Brad Pitt who goes around the world to gather testimonies from survivors in order to stop a Zombie pandemic which threatens to wipe out the entire human race.

Richard Heek’s Amazing Bubble Photography

During the holidays, my sister and I were playing with bubbles along with our dogs. Instead of playing with them though, they got scared and ran away. I also tried to take photos but I wasn’t successful. Richard Heeks though took bubble photography to another level. Armed with a zoom lense, he photographed the reflections captured in bubbles.

2013 Book Review #4 - Trapped by Kevin Hearne

Tuesday, January 22, 2013 , 0 Comments

Trapped is Book Five in The Iron Druid Chronicles written by Kevin Hearne. Some have dubbed him to be the heir to Jim Butcher's The Dresden Files series and I can't agree more. If you're looking to get acquainted with Druidry, then I urge you to pick up the first book in the series. If you're loving the series trapped-kevin-hearneas much as I do then you know of the joy I'm talking about. After reading through book five, I'm so ready for Book Six which is entitled "Hunted" but unfortunately it's still a few month's wait (expected publication will be in June). Also if you've been following this blog for a while, then you'll know I've been raving about this series in a couple of previous posts.

It's very hard not to give away key points in the plot while I write this review but I'll try not to reveal so much. I think it's still fair though to put a spoiler warning here.

PLOT
Trapped is set 12 years after the events from Tricked and Granuaile is finally ready to be bound to the Earth and become a full-pledged Druid. Binding her to the earth means that she'll finally get her tattoos and Druidic powers. However, it becomes a hide and seek game when Bacchus, an ancient vampire and Loki all decide to hunt down Atticus for what he has done in the past.

Movie Poster for Oz the Great and Powerful

Monday, January 21, 2013 , 0 Comments

For several weeks now, I’ve been constantly listening to the soundtrack of Wicked the Musical as part of my playlist at work. It helps keep me anticipating one of the movies I’m looking forward to see this year. Oz the Great and Powerful is directed by Sam Raimi and will be distributed by Walt Disney Studios.  The movie is the re-imagining of how the powerful wizard came to be in Oz. Oscar Diggs (James Franco) is a small-time circus magician who finds himself being doted on and looked up upon by the citizens of Oz.

He meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams ) who insist that he’s not the great wizard he seems to be. Oscar must then find out who belongs to the good and evil side before it’s too late. He also must rely on his own skills in illusion, ingenuity and a bit of wizardry so that he can become the powerful wizard he was meant to be.

Oz the Great and Powerful will be seen in Philippine theaters on March 8, 2013.

Notebooks App Review

Sunday, January 20, 2013 , 0 Comments

If you’re looking for a free Android app that lets you organize your notes into separate notebooks, then you might consider an app that has the same name. I found Notebooks while browsing through the Google Play Store and got lucky. I consider Notebooks to be an alternative to Microsoft OneNote that doesn’t need a signup for an account and no limit to how many notes you can make. Notebooks is also simpler and offers a lot more customization options.

Parental Guidance Movie Review

Sunday, January 20, 2013 , 0 Comments

Having no kids of my own, I only have an inkling of just how hard it is to raise kids. I’ve watched too many movies though to safely conclude that there really movie-reviewis no definite manual for this except that each kid is different from the other and parents may have to revise their tactics now and again. In the movie, Parental Guidance, we get a hilarious look at parenting - contemporary style and old school. We’d also get to conclude for ourselves what really works. Parental Guidance is no doubt a movie with a lot of heart and it is evenly balanced by lots of hilarious scenes.

PLOT
Alice (Marissa Tomei) and Phil (Tom Everett Scott) pride themselves on employing contemporary parenting practices when it comes to their children – Harper (Bailee Madison), Turner (Joshua Rush) and Barker (Kyle Harrison Breitkopf). Are you Ready for the Next Hunger Games?

Sunday, January 20, 2013 , 0 Comments

Entertainment Weekly has just recently released production stills for the second movie in the Hunger Games trilogy. Catching Fire is due in theaters November of this year. Just two days shy of my birthday. I am honestly having some reservations about this because the first movie was such a disappointment for me. I ranted about it in my Hunger Games movie review. Catching Fire is going to be directed by Francis Lawrence, not the same one from the first movie so maybe it’s going to be done right this time around.

2013 Book Review #3 An Abundance of Katherines by John Green

Wednesday, January 16, 2013 , 0 Comments

When it comes to attraction with the opposite sex, most people have a type. It’s almost always a physical trait. For Colin though it was a name, Katherine to be precise. Colin is the protagonist in John Green’s novel, An Abundance of Katherines. Colin was fortunate enough to have met quite a few of Katherines in his life. His count grew up until a 19th Katherine who unfortunately had recently dumped him.

abundance-of-katherines-book-review
And so begins this amusing and sort of whimsical novel. The mood that the novel conveyed reminded me so much of The Perks of Being a Wallflower minus the dramatic and sad parts. When Katherine the 19th dumped Colin, he thought he wouldn’t be happy again. His best friend Hassan, coaxed him to go on a road trip as a means of distraction from his heartache. In a town named Gutshot, he met a girl named Lindsey. For the summer, Colin and Hassan stayed at Lindsey’s place while Colin mulled things over and they got a job to interview people around the town.

An Abundance of Katherines is a fun and amusing read for me. I kept imagining Hassan to be the Indian guy in Parks and Recreation even though he is a Muslim. This a book for those who have experienced getting their hearts broken more than once. I’d expect some parts to be highly relatable. Colin tortured himself after the break-up pondering over minute details of their relationship and of course Katherine. Haven’t we all gone through that too?

Jack Reacher Movie Review

Tuesday, January 15, 2013 , 0 Comments

One of the most recurring lead characters in a movie or novel is that rogue cop who’s always movie-reviewfighting for what is right. Jack Reacher is such a man and for those who do not know, he’s a foremost protagonist in Lee Child’s successful series of novels. Jack Reacher’s investigative skills is said to be unparalleled, add that to a photographic memory and fighting prowess, makes one extremely grateful that he’s one of the good guys. Well, that depends on your definition of good too. In this adaptation from the novel One Shot, Tom Cruise plays the legendary role of Jack Reacher.

10 of the Best Steampunk Book Covers

Monday, January 14, 2013 , 0 Comments

I’m currently still on a high from a Warehouse 13 marathon and at the same time suffering from severe withdrawal because the show is currently on break and won’t return until April. Oh golly gosh that’s still months from now. Most of the artifacts featured in the show has a Steampunk vibe to it. According to wikipedia, Steampunk is a genre of science fiction that features steam-powered machinery, it also features a post-apocalyptic future where steam power has become the primary power source. Steampunk can therefore be seen in fashion, culture, architecture style and art.

To my surprise, by browsing Goodreads one lazy afternoon during the holiday break, there’s a whole category dedicated to Steampunk novels. Here are the best ones for reading and the ones with the best Steampunk book covers.

2013 Book Review #2: Ghost Story by Jim Butcher

Sunday, January 13, 2013 , 0 Comments

I’ve been a fan of The Dresden Files book series ever since reading the first one last year. I breezed through 12 of the books since then. In fact, if you look through my 2012 reading challenge at Goodreads, you’ll see that I read the books one after the other and with only a few books in between. So done with the 12 and here comes book 13th. For Jim Butcher though, 13 may not be such a lucky number. At the risk of giving you a spoiler, in Ghost Story, Harry Dresden is now a ghost.
ghost-story-book-review

PLOT
Harry Dresden wakes up as a spirit and was given the task by Murphy’s father to find his killer in order for him to “move on” to the afterlife. If he doesn’t do so, three of his loved ones will be harmed.

IMPRESSIONS
I’ve given consistent ratings of four to five stars for the previous books and it is for the first time that I’ve given a two star rating. I honestly didn’t enjoy Dresden as a ghost too much. Although he generally retained some of his personality, gone are the wit and sarcasm that made Dresden such an enjoyable protagonist to read about. It almost feels like Jim Butcher had someone else write this one because the Dresden is different in a lot of obvious and subtle ways.

I’m sure that by now, you’ve seen a lot of note-taking apps in the Play Store. Some of those you’ve actually tried and kept on your phone while some have not been so fortunate. Well, here’s one more note-taking app that you can try. I know you don’t need one more but trust me, it’s worth a look. Dining at Mango Tree Bistro

Tuesday, January 08, 2013 0 Comments

Last November, we got the chance to quell our Thai food cravings at the Mango Tree Bistro at Greenbelt 5 in Makati City. The interior of the store is relatively smaller than its flagship cousin at Bonifacio High Street but is just as cozy nonetheless. I love the intimate and mysterious mood that the black, purple and red orange color scheme exudes.

I love the bottom-lit wall accents behind the banquette seating inside the restaurant. It lends a nice glow and ambient light throughout the dining space.

2013 Book Review #1: Tricked by Kevin Hearne

Tuesday, January 08, 2013 , 0 Comments

The Iron Druid Chronicles is one of my most recommended fantasy novel series last year, I’m so happy that it was recommended to me. From reading the first book up to Tricked, I couldn’t get enough of Druid lore, Atticus, Oberon, Granuaile and of course the gods adapting to modern times. I even raved about it in a separate post that you can read here.
tricked-kevin-hearne

PLOT
Facing the consequences of what happened in Azgard, Atticus must now fake his death to protect the ones he love. In exchange, Coyote enlists Atticus’ help in a mining project that he has in the desert, only for Atticus to find out that he had to deal with skinwalkers while he was there too.

THOUGHTS
You can probably read this book without having read the other but you’ll be missing out on A LOT. With that said, this book continues from the events of the previous book and Atticus is now covering his tracks. I’m still in awe of the power of druids and this book made me realize that even more. The events in the book are very fast paced but with enough breathing room for the reader to learn about Native American rituals and mythology. There’s a healthy dose of twists and betrayals in between that were extremely unexpected. I’ve found myself at a loss along with Atticus when he couldn’t figure out things too. I guess part of what makes this book fun is that you can formulate a guess about certain plot points and still get surprised in the end.

I’m a huge fan of fancy pens and as far as those go, Parker is one of the leading brands for professional writing instruments. There was one show that described architects as pen whores, well Interior Designers are no exception. Over the course of my career, I’ve had brand preferences for my pens. I use pens both for sketching and for writing.

The New Parker Pen which uses 5th technology caught my eye mainly because of its design. It’s a cross between a calligraphy pen and a modern pen. Look at it, it’s just simply beautiful.

Incredible Burt Wonderstone Movie Posters

Friday, January 04, 2013 , 0 Comments

This is one of the movie that I very much would like to see this year. The movie posters in this post show the lead characters of the movie - Steve Carell, Steve Buscemi, Olivia Wilde and Jim Carrey. Yep that’s right Jim Carrey and Steve Carell together again in the movie. Jim Carrey looks almost unrecognizable with his straight long hair and meticulously styled moustache.

In the movie, a great magician duo was ruling the Las Vegas strip. Burt Wonderstone (Steve Carell) and Anton Marvelton (Steve Buscemi) raked in millions with the magical act. However, they have long since had a falling out and their friendship on-stage was also just part of the act. Their foremost competitor is a rising street magician name Steve Gray (Jim Carrey), whose fame and popularity seem to surge with each stunt. Wonderstone and Marvelton must figure out a way to get their act together and tame the competition.

An Intimate and Relaxing Dinner at Café 1771

Thursday, January 03, 2013 0 Comments

For my birthday a few months ago, I chose to celebrate it with a special dinner at a nice and charming restaurant at El Pueblo in Ortigas. The place is called Café 1771. I believe that it is one of El Pueblo’s most treasured haven for foodies.

THE INTERIORS
Entering Café 1771 alone is such a delight to the eyes. The interiors are visually appealing, blending elements of modern country chic with neo-Victorian styled furniture pieces. Part of the charm of the interior are the informal chairs that were upholstered in fabrics bearing the color accents of turquoise, fuschia and sea green. The effect isn’t cluttered, instead each seating stands on its own. Each providing its own cozy cove in the already relaxing space.

I used a mild Lomo filter here for my camera and the interior appears more yellow than usual but take note of the bright splashes of color.
