Watch the Latest Trailer for Pacific Rim

Tuesday, April 30, 2013 , , 0 Comments

I watched this trailer just a few minutes ago and once again, I felt the goosebumps and the silent anticipation for July, the month when Pacific Rim will be shown in theathers. I just can’t say no to the appeal of giant robots, giant monsters and the voice of GlaDos all in one film. There it goes again, the goosebumps. Smile with tongue out
pacific-rim-movie-stills-04
In the movie, monstrous creatures called the Kaiju have began a war with humanity. Consuming Earth’s resources and taking countless of human lives. Humanity isn’t so frail as it seems because they started to fight back. Their massive robots called Jaegers stand against the Kaiju. Each Jaeger is controlled by two pilots and in the face of sure defeat, two unlikely heroes must take upon themselves the responsibility of saving mankind.

Marvel at these Amazing 3d Book Art

Tuesday, April 30, 2013 , 0 Comments

Sometimes, a book that was penned by a great writer becomes so significant in the world of literature that it becomes a classic. I’m sure that you’ve probably read one or two. These stories can stand the test of time and passed down to future generations. They never fade and our appreciation for them only mature with the passing of time. What happens after you’ve read a book? Normal people (like you and me perhaps) just probably would put it back to the bookshelf or returned to its rightful owner if it was borrowed. Artist Kelly Campbell Berry takes her love for great classics to another level. She re-interprets these well-loved stories into an amazing creation of book sculpture.
3d-book-art
Her tools are a hardbound book of a certified classic, preferably the one with pictures and a very sharp craft knife. Her art consists of cutting out the pictures from within the book’s pages and superimposing them in the middle of the opened book in a form of collage.

Jane Levy Stars in Evil Dead

Monday, April 29, 2013 , 0 Comments

I’ve already accepted the fact that I’ll be sleeping with the lights on tonight after attending the press screening of Evil Dead. This remake of the 1981 original film had already gotten positive reviews from critics and I can’t wait to see myself how good it is, despite me not having a particular liking of horror films. Well, I’ve made the resolution earlier this year to watch more films from this genre and this seems like a good step to take.
jane-levy-evil-dead
The lead character of the film will be played by Jane Levy who impressed Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell so much in her audition that they knew at once that she was the one to play Mia. The role was a pretty demanding part, they needed an actress who is generally sweet but terrifying when she transforms into a monster. Jane Levy went above and beyond what was directed of her in her role, she never complained and always asked how she could improve.

Iron Man 3 Movie Review

Monday, April 29, 2013 , 0 Comments

I was lucky enough to see iron Man 3 on the first day of its release. As expected, the cinemas were packed; people just couldn't wait to see the third installment of the Iron Man movie franchise. I couldn't help but get caught up in the excitement too and when Robert Downey Jr. showed up on screen, I was already giddy with too much anticipation. I'm sure by now you already know that just on the opening day alone, Iron Man 3 had already earned Php 62.6M, a sure sign that this movie is worth seeing. Let me tell you why.

Exploring the New Look of the Google Play Store

Sunday, April 28, 2013 , , 0 Comments

I finally got to try out the new look of the Google Play Store last Friday. I'm using my Android tablet to view this. On initial launch, in case the Play Store update has already been applied to your Android device, you'll notice three things:
· Gone is that dark color scheme of the Play Store, it's now replaced by the trademark Android green and a beige background.
· The menu categories can now be accessed by swiping from left to right depending on the size of your screen.
· Lastly, the most noticeable change in this new look will be the Pinterest-like presentation of the apps.

2013 Book Review #19: The Adoration of Jenna Fox by Mary Pearson

Sunday, April 28, 2013 , 0 Comments

What if you wake one day without any memory of who you were? That was the question that I had in mind when I read the synopsis for the book, The Adoration of Jenna Fox by Mary Pearson. Jenna Fox woke up from an 18th month long coma and she has to figure out things from a set of videos that her parents prepared for her. The novel is set sometime in the near future. Jenna and her family lived in a quiet suburban neighborhood that was far from the hustle and bustle of the city.
“There are many words and definitions I have never lost. But some I am only just beginning to truly understand.”
adoration-of-jenna-fox-book-review
The novel centered on Jenna Fox and her journey to discover who she once was. She has to piece together her life through the meticulous video documentation of her parents through the years. She also has to figure out the meaning of her nightmares and memories that she wasn’t supposed to have. Throughout the novel, these questions plagued Jenna Fox. What happened while she was in a coma and what caused her coma anyway? Who were her former friends? What were her parents hiding from her?

What prompted to read was curiosity. I wanted to find out what went on in Jenna’s life pre-coma. What made the novel more interesting was that it was told in her point of view. It’s almost like being inside Jenna’s mind while she figured out the clues to her previous life. My initial impression was that her parents wanted her to think that she was someone else and I wanted to find out if my instincts were correct.

I liked the fact that the novel touched on moral issues lightly but presented the two sides without preference. What Jenna’s parents did was out of love and concern. I think it’s what any other loving parent would do for their child. I understood that when they had the means to manipulate technology and science, even though they knew that it was wrong by law, they took the chance out of desperation and personal justification. On Jenna’s behalf though, I could sympathize how she felt incomplete not knowing who she once was. Her natural curiosity was understandable; I would also be if I were in her position.

Unboxing the BDJ Box Elite, excited!

Friday, April 26, 2013 0 Comments

Here’s one more reason to love being a BDJ Box subscriber, the BDJ Box Elite. I found the package on my work desk this morning and when I saw the BDJ Box logo on the black box, I couldn’t wait to put down my bags and open it. I was already smiling because I knew there’s something good inside. I was having a bad start to my Friday morning and a BDJ Box waiting for me never fails to perk me right up. Like all the previous BDJ Boxes that I’ve written before, the BDJ Box Elite  can be yours for a slightly higher fee than your usual BDJ Box subscription but it is a bigger box and filled with full-sized products.

Trance Movie Review

Thursday, April 25, 2013 , 0 Comments

Have you ever been curious about hypnotherapy? Does it really work? The movie Trance offers us a glimpse into this form of psychotherapy. Coming into the theater to watch the movie, I admit that I knew little about the film and I honestly didn't know what to expect. I thought for sure it would go just like any other suspense film would. Instead I found myself at the edge of my seat and with my mind blown more times than I could count. Trance was unexpectedly dark, complex and satisfyingly engaging.

Using Sketch Guru to Edit your Photos: A Free Android App

I've been using a lot of photography apps with filters on my Android phone and tablet and I haven't found a good app that applies excellent "sketch" effects. It seems like I've finally found one with Sketch Guru. It's a free Android app from the Google Play Store that you can download for only 6.3MB. What I like about Sketch Guru best is that it's a very simple app with no frilly interface. It's a breeze to use.

Main Trailer for Man of Steel

Monday, April 22, 2013 , , 0 Comments

Here’s a movie that’s been making a buzz since last year but don’t count it out as yet another origin story. Man of Steel tells of the story of Superman, perhaps the most recognizable and loved superhero among all superheroes. The fact that Zack Snyder is directing the film make it all the more something to look forward to. The director has a lot of great hits under his belt – 300, Sucker Punch, Legend of the Guardians: Owls of Ga’hoole.
superman-trailer-02
Man of Steel stars Henry Cavill in the role of Superman/Clark Kent/Kal-El as he finds himself discovering his superpowers and finding himself alienated by it. He learns that he was from the planet Krypton and begins to question why he was sent to Earth. His humanity was shaped by adoptive parents Martha (Diane Lane) and Jonathan Kent (Kevin Costner). When the world needs a superhero, Clark must become the hero the world clamors for to protect the ones he loves. Starring opposite him is Amy Adams in the role of Lois Lane.

Revisiting Old Vine Grille

Monday, April 22, 2013 0 Comments

One weekend we decided to get lunch at Old Vine Grille at Eastwood Mall and it’s been quite a while since I last sampled their tasty dishes. Now I’m apologizing for the low quality photos because I only had my phone at that time. Inside Old Vine Grille, it was just as cozy as I had remembered and I was eager to have my fill of their meat dishes this time around.

Enjoying Good Online Shopping Experience with Zalora

Since its launching, I’ve been going to Zalora for those times when I find myself too busy to go to a mall to shop. Zalora lets me shop in the convenience of my own home and on my own chosen time. Online shopping has its own conveniences and disadvantages. Two of the major conveniences I can think of are: there’s no line at the checkout counter and you can spend hours and hours browsing through the products and your feet will not get tired. Unlike conventional shopping though, shopping online does limit you from touching or fitting the items before buying them. Zalora does allow returning of items within a certain period of time should you find that a shoe or a piece of clothing doesn’t fit you. Fortunately for me, I never had to return anything so far.

Star Trek Into Darkness Coming to us in May

Sunday, April 21, 2013 , 0 Comments

Kicking off the highly anticipated number of movies for summer in the US is Star Trek Into Darkness. I’m more than excited to see J.J. Abram’s latest project and this time I guess he’s converting more and more people to become Trekkies. The movie Star Trek Into Darkness was initially met with doubt when the announcement for the movie title came out but as the opening date draw near and the teaser trailers continue to be met with cheers in theaters, people are now embracing the movie and looking forward to it.

2013 Book Review #18 – I am Legend by Richard Matheson

Sunday, April 21, 2013 , 0 Comments

As I read through Richard Matheson’s novel, I am Legend; I couldn’t help but recall scenes from the movie. As fully dramatized the movie was, the novel infinitely better. They said that I am Legend paved the way for modern writing about the zombie genre and the concept of mankind being annihilated by disease. You’d be surprised to learn that Richard Matheson didn’t write about zombies at all but of vampires, veering away from traditional vampire lore.

i-am-legend
PLOT
Robert Neville finds himself as the last man on earth. He struggled to find the answers about where the disease came from and if possible, a cure. Each night, he was taunted by the vampires and by day, he adds to his research. Then one day he finds a woman and he finally has hope that he wasn’t alone after all.

IMPRESSIONS
Being alone.
I can’t imagine the certain kind of loneliness that Robert felt. He had watched his wife die and his friends and neighbors turn into vampires. He didn’t understand why he was immune and he was lonely except not really. It was a desperate situation that he was in. It wasn’t surprising why he had wanted to take his life several times.

300: Rise of an Empire Teaser Poster

Sunday, April 21, 2013 , 0 Comments

Back when Zack Snyder’s movie 300 hit the theaters, the cinematic style in which the movie was done was revolutionary. I couldn’t think of a better way to honor Frank Miller’s masterpiece. Now several years after, 300: Rise of an Empire is movie based on Frank Miller’s latest graphic novel Xerxes and done in the same visual style of 300. The movie tells of the story of Greek general Themistokles and his efforts to unite all of Greece. He leads the Greek army against the invading Persian forces led once again by the mortal-turned-god Xerxes and Artemesia, the commander of the Persian navy.

12 Amazing Wallpapers for your Android Tablet

Friday, April 19, 2013 , , 0 Comments

I don’t like boring homescreens. Every week or even sometimes more than twice a week, I change the wallpapers on my tablet, my phone and my desktop. If I happen to like the design, then that would stay there for months. I like changing the wallpaper often because I like a fresher look every now and then. Then again, it might also just be the antsy artist in me. Here’s a number of wallpapers that  I have personally chosen to use for my Galaxy Tab 2 and for you to use on your own tablets or PCs. The resolution of the wallpapers are 1280 x 800.

Another Dose of Frankie’s New York Buffalo Wings

Friday, April 19, 2013 0 Comments

Last week, I finally got the chance to go back to Frankie’s New York Buffalo Wings at City Golf Plaza right beside the Ortigas Home Depot. Remember how I raved about it before? Well, this time around, I was there to try out some more of the flavors for the chicken wings. So there we were, eager for a scrumptuous chicken wing lunch. The flavors of choice were Smokey BBQ and Honey Mustard. Of course, the meal wouldn’t be complete without a side of their delicious fries.

Steamed Tilapia with Three Onions

Thursday, April 18, 2013 0 Comments

Here’s yet another healthy dish that I served for dinner last week. It’s super easy to make but reduced me to tears while I was chopping up the onions. My dog looked on probably worried about what was happening to me. Haha. The original recipe which I found in the Yummy: Healthy at Home recipe book had a dipping sauce with it but since my dad isn’t allowed anything too salty, I scratched that off.

INGREDIENTS
2 medium tilapias, cleaned and gutted
2 leeks, sliced thinly
3 spring onions, sliced thinly
2 purple onions, chopped coarsely
dried tarragon
salt and pepper

2013 Book Review #17 Promised by Caragh M. O’brien

Thursday, April 18, 2013 , 0 Comments

Promised is the third and LAST book in the Birthmarked Trilogy and if you’ve been following my blog for a while, then you’ll know that I’ve given not so good ratings to the first two books. You might be asking yourself why I continued on to the third book if the first two weren’t that good. I stuck with it for the sake of finishing the trilogy and for sparing some of you from suffering the same fate as I have. I admittedly had a hard time finishing the book. I can’t count the number of times that I had wanted to just abandon it due to extreme annoyance with the lead character in the novel. Despite that though, I prevailed.

promised-book-review
PLOT
Gaia is now the matriarch of the people of Sylum and her first act of leadership was to lead the people away from the cursed place that was altering their genetic makeup. Their destination was back to the Enclave. Under the rule of the evil Protectorat, the chances of a harmonious relationship with the people of the Enclave is grim. Gaia must convince the Protectorat to share their resources in order for the people of New Sylum to survive.

As I read the book and marked my progress on Goodreads, I couldn’t stop myself from putting comments in my update. I knew I might be putting in a bit of spoiler but hey, I had to vent out somewhere right?

Nope, we don’t like your Fumes

Thursday, April 18, 2013 0 Comments

Working in Makati, the business center of Metro Manila, has its perks and disadvantages. One of the disadvantages is how nightmarish it can be to find parking especially if you arrive well beyond 8 am. This is the reason why I tend to sacrifice a few more hours of sleep just to get up extra early not only to beat the traffic to get to Makati but also to find a good parking spot that’s near where I work. Thankfully there is a parking building that’s only a few blocks away. I usually get there before 7 am.

There are quite a number of cars inside the parking building as early as that. I think most have the same thinking as I do. I’ve observed that some pass the time in their cars, opening their windows a crack and nap for a while. When you’ve been going through the routine for a while, you begin to notice familiar cars in the same slots each day. Napping would have been fine since most of the cars there arrive well past 8 am and those are for the reserved sections. I think you can get at least an hour of quality nap without worrying about too much exhaust fumes.

Then I begin to notice that this gray ’92 Galant started to park as early as we do and he doesn’t shut off his engine as we do. He idles for I don’t know how long and his car doesn’t idle quietly, he has a loud muffler. His car fumes actually fill the immediate area near his car. Too bad for the ones looking forward to a nap before going to work because his carbon monoxide fumes post a risk to that habit. Then just today I noticed why he’s keeping his car idling for so long, he was smoking!

What Can We Expect from Iron Man 3?

Wednesday, April 17, 2013 , 0 Comments

Robert Downey Jr.
For the past Iron Man films, I've written over and over that I wouldn't be able to see any other actor play the genius and brilliant billionaire Tony Stark with the alter ego of Iron Man. Robert Downey Jr. has done such a great job with the role and fans couldn't be happier. Iron Man 3 serves as a culmination of all the Iron Man movies and a continuation of where we left off in Marvel's The Avengers. It's great that they're tying up the films together and for the viewers to have continuity at some point.
iron-man-3
In Iron Man 3, the filmmakers has decided to put Tony Stark in an environment where he would have to rely on his brilliant mind to be resourceful, stripped of his toys and gadgets, he would have to find another means in which to survive. This reminds me so much of the first film and it would be great to see Tony Stark hard at work for survival again. Although I'm not thoroughly familiar with the Iron Man comics, this third film is said to have the Extremis story line mixed in it. I guess we'll find out when it hits theaters next week.

Solitude

Tuesday, April 16, 2013 0 Comments

It’s National Poetry Month and here’s a poem that I like to share with my readers. It’s written by Ella Wheeler Wilcox.
Solitude
Laugh, and the world laughs with you;
Weep, and you weep alone.
For the sad old earth must borrow it's mirth,
But has trouble enough of its own.
Sing, and the hills will answer;
Sigh, it is lost on the air.
The echoes bound to a joyful sound,
But shrink from voicing care.
Rejoice, and men will seek you;
Grieve, and they turn and go.
They want full measure of all your pleasure,
But they do not need your woe.
Be glad, and your friends are many;
Be sad, and you lose them all.
There are none to decline your nectared wine,
But alone you must drink life's gall.
Feast, and your halls are crowded;
Fast, and the world goes by.
Succeed and give, and it helps you live,
But no man can help you die.
There is room in the halls of pleasure
For a long and lordly train,
But one by one we must all file on
Through the narrow aisles of pain.

The Top 5 Free Android Games that I’m Playing Right now

Tuesday, April 16, 2013 , , , 0 Comments

I’ve recently developed a habit of playing a lot of games with my Android tablet simply because I’ve been testing out its battery life. So far so good. With constant playing I’ve had it last for up to 6 days and sometimes when I get so busy, it can even last up to 10. These free Android games are great for relaxing at the end of the day too. Here’s my list.

ONE
Candy Crush Saga
I know you’re probably tired of seeing a lot of game updates from this game on Facebook but believe me, it’s so darn addicting. I can get stuck for several days in one stage and even ask for help when I get desperate but continue playing on. I’m past level 100 now and I’ve been told that it gets harder the longer your play it especially in the harder levels but hey I’m not there yet. I think this is one game where I’ll look forward to more frustrations to come.
free-Android-games
Why I keep playing it: To develop the skills I need to make those killer candy combos plus the sheer number of friends playing it too make it all the more fun.

Incredible Crochet Food Art

Tuesday, April 16, 2013 , 0 Comments

Before she got married, my mom made a promise to herself that she’ll finish an entire white crochet bedcover for herself. That she did. It is from her that I got my basic skills with crocheting. I’ve made phone cases and doilies for myself but never got into the complicated patterns. Then I got busy with so many other hobbies. When I saw these works from Kate Jenkins, I was amazed at how incredibly creative she got with crochet. I’ve been thinking of learning amigurumi myself but her crochet food art is definitely something else.

Take a look. I’ve chosen these photos of the crochet food art that I liked best but she has tons on her website. I wonder how long these took to make.

And the Crazy Photo Memes Live on

Monday, April 15, 2013 , 0 Comments

Back when planking became such a craze, it came to the point that it just looked plain silly everytime I saw one on my Facebook feed because everyone was doing it. Fads as they say come and go in the blink of an eye. Now however, there’s a seemingly sheer number of photo memes circulating around the internet that are slowly catching on and making waves in the social media scenes. I wonder how long it will take for people to tire of these too.

Epic is Coming our Way from Blue Sky Studios

Sunday, April 14, 2013 , 0 Comments

It’s been awhile since I’ve last seen an animation film with bugs and birds. Lately it’s been cars, giants, video game characters and dinosaurs. I kinda miss seeing all those greens and fantastic little creatures. What made me notice the movie Epic when they started showing the trailer in theaters last year was its good choice of Snow Patrol song. The movie Epic features the voice of Amanda Seyfried as Mary Katherine of MK for short who is joined by her estranged father, Professor Bomba voiced by Jason Sudeikis.

Unboxing the April BDJ Box, All Set for Summer

Sunday, April 14, 2013 0 Comments

Capping off a stressful week was my unboxing of the April BDJ Box which was full to the brim and heavy with beauty goodies. Unlike the last two BDJ Boxes, this one is not an exclusive box of products but more like the first few BDJ Boxes released. What’s good about the April BDJ Box though is the sheer number of full-sized products inside. Out of the 9 products inside, 6 were full-sized. It’s really good to be looking forward to this beauty treat every month courtesy of the BDJ Box subscription.

I’m hoping that this will be the start of a series of posts with the topic of healthy recipes. Last week, I had the chance to make this - Baked Fish a la Mushrooms.

The Books of Gillian Flynn and Upcoming Movie Adaptations

Sunday, April 14, 2013 , 0 Comments

One of the authors whose works I’ve started to read this year is Gillian Flynn. I consider her works to be disturbingly brilliant. She’s a master at crafting stories that explore the darkness of human nature. Her style, as I’ve come to know from her novels is to take readers on a journey where you get to read a character’s thoughts and with details in the plot revealed at strategic points in the novel but leaves you on the edge and guessing until the big reveal.

Gillian Flynn writes in a way that exposes the weaknesses and faults of her protagonist but you’ll end up liking them anyway. Very few authors have the skill to do that. Others simply render their reader excessively annoyed and frustrated with the lead character.

Gillian Flynn has already published three books so far and all of them had garnered awards and merits and are on bestseller lists. I’ve rated the 3 books with very high marks over at Goodreads. After reading just one novel from her had me searching for the other books that she wrote. I was instantly a fan.

How to Spend More Time with your Dog

Friday, April 12, 2013 0 Comments

Dogs are one of God’s most noble creatures and as an avid dog lover and owner, I can attest to their fierce loyalty and devotion. Given proper care and attention, a dog will be there for you no matter what. Since they give us unconditional love, even if we don’t demand it from them, it’s just right to give back some time and affection. For me, it’s simply heartwarming to see a dog wagging its tail off at the joy of being with you.

Here are some ways on how you can spend more time with your dog.

Go for a walk.
Dogs love walks and the exercise will do your body wonders too. Just remember to bring along a poop scooper just in case.

Unique Phone Case

Thursday, April 11, 2013 0 Comments

Just when I thought that I’ve seen all the designs that they could think of for phones, they come up with this. Phone underwear!!! Oh yes, they have one for sale.

Oh goodness, I stand corrected. They have several designs available. I had thought a phone case serves to protect the “body” of your phone and not just one part. This one is clearly intended to be just cute.

Well, would you fancy dressing up your phone with the fantastic undies? You can buy it HERE.

The Great Gatsby Character Artworks

Thursday, April 11, 2013 , 0 Comments

One thing that I loved when I first saw the trailer from the movie The Great Gatsby was the great soundtrack, then I noticed the period fashion. I have not had the opportunity to read the book written by F. Scott Fitzgerald but I’m looking forward to this movie adaptation from Warner Bros. Pictures.

Take a look at the rest of these bus shelter artworks released especially for the film. The Great Gatsby stars Leonardo Di Caprio as Jay Gatsby, Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan, Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway, Elizabeth Debicki as Jordan Baker, Isla Fisher as Myrtle Wilson, and Joel Edgerton as Tom Buchanan. The movie is set in New York City in the year 1922 at a time when people lived lives that were following very loose morals and night were spent in glitz, glamour and jazz.

Women’s Top 5 Favorite Excuses to go Shopping

Wednesday, April 10, 2013 , , 0 Comments

I remember an infographic that I saw before about the differences between men and women when it comes to shopping. It showed how men go straight to the store with the stuff they want and then leave whereas women tend to go through a lot of stores before buying anything. The infographic merited a chuckle from me but I do recognize its truth. Well, women just really enjoy shopping and that’s a fact.

Women’s Top 5 Favorite Excuses to go Shopping

I deserve a treat for all the stress at work.”
I’m guilty of this excuse a lot of times and with my line of work, there are certain weeks when I get stressed every single day. Sometimes it feels like a nice way to de-stress by means of shopping.
