Quick Bites: Stella

Friday, May 31, 2013 0 Comments

Last week we decided to check out this seemingly homey and cozy restaurant at the Bonifacio High Street East Superblock. Since Stella was a bit full of customers at the time that we arrived, we had to sit down at the adjoining bar and resto, Rocket Room which also served the food items from Stella. Stella had more of a diner feel while Rocket Room had dim lights and candle lighting. Our chosen dinner were the following:
  • Melted Spanish Chorizo Bruschetta
  • Stella’s Porchetta
  • Butcher’s Best Pizza
Melted Spanish Chorizo Bruschetta Php 195 [dish from Rocket Room]
Shishito peppers, Malagos pecorino, melted Rizal dairy mozzarella

Hand Cut Coin Pendants

Thursday, May 30, 2013 , 0 Comments

Have you ever thought of recycling old coins lying around the house into jewelry? If that thought came to mind, I would just have someone bore a hole into them and put them as charms on a bracelet or just a pendant. At Thornhill Jewelry, they decided to add some more design and art into old coins before they were made into jewelry. Check out these hand cut coin pendants

The Latest Monsters University Poster and Trailer

Wednesday, May 29, 2013 , , 0 Comments

Here’s our chance to find out where it all began. Before Sulley (John Goodman) and Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) became the formidable team in Monster’s Inc. that we came to know and love, they started out far from being friends in Monsters University. In the movie, Mike Wazowski’s dreams of hitting it big as a Scarer was put to a halt as he crossed paths with Sulley, a natural-born Scarer.

The Hangover Part 3 Movie Review

Wednesday, May 29, 2013 , 0 Comments

When the announcement for The Hangover Part 3 came out, the first thought that came into my mind was what trouble and scandal will the Wolf Pack get themselves into this time around? As I recalled the first two films, those were utterly a riot. Bearing in mind the first set of The Hangover films, my expectations were like this - the significant memory loss, the antics that Stu will get himself into and the scramble to re-trace their steps and find out what happened during the memory gap. Have my expectations been met? Yes and no. Read on to find out why.

Amazing 3d Latte Art

Tuesday, May 28, 2013 0 Comments

When I made a post years ago about some unique latte art, I’ve been wanting to see the same kind of talent here locally but unfortunately, the occasional floral pattern was the only one I got. Here’s taking the art to another level. A Japanese-based barista named Kazuki Yamamoto is making waves on the internet with his exceptional latte art. His designs have sometimes been in 3d. Take a look.

2013 Book Review #24: The Fault in our Stars by John Green

Tuesday, May 28, 2013 , 0 Comments

When I read the synopsis for The Fault in our Stars, I immediately had the impression that it would just be your regular sad love story born from two unfortunate souls. Instead, I found myself deeply immersed in a novel with characters so perfectly drawn, a plot that's incredibly well-written and an unforgettable book that in no surprise won the Goodreads readers choice award last year.
fault-in-our-stars-book-review

The novel did reduce me to tears on more than one occasion. Those were tears falling because the author's writing made me feel so much compassion and emotion. It's one of those rare novels that I'll gladly read again and I will stay at the very last chapter, "Damn, that's a good book."

When Hazel Grace checked in to a cancer support group after finding herself in remission from stage IV thyroid cancer, she didn't expect to find a friendship with a kindred spirit within Augustus Waters. Her friendship with the gorgeous boy soon deepened as he found more and more ways to make her feel glad to be alive, including the chance to meet her favorite author in person. The complications start when the disease threated to overcome them both and Hazel must find meaning about life's purpose and as it seems, destiny's cruel fate.

Monday, May 27, 2013 , , 0 Comments

Ever heard the phrase “two wrongs don’t make a right”? Well, it seems like David Burke (Jason Sudekis) hasn’t known about this because as he clings for desperation, he devises a plan that may or may not put him into so much more trouble. David works as a small-time pot dealer and in one brief act of kindness, he helps a bunch of local teens and in turn gets beat up in the process. With his stash gone, he is left with great debt to his supplier, Brad (Ed Helms).

To make amends, David must now bring in Brad’s latest shipment from Mexico. In a stroke of genius, David generates a plan that might get him through the border with the help of his neighbors, the stripper Rose (Jennifer Aniston) and future customer Kenny (Will Poulter), and the rebel teen Casey (Emma Roberts). Carrot Cake Squares

Sunday, May 26, 2013 0 Comments

For quite a while now, I’ve stared enviously at all the cupcakes and baked goodies I’ve seen on Pinterest. I’ve been wanting to learn how to bake but found that I have neither the means nor the time to learn to do so. Thanks to the oven that my sister bought a few months ago, I can now learn how to bake. Today I did just that. My first attempt was to make carrot cake squares.

When you stroll through the cinemas inside a mall, don’t you notice that most movie posters look almost the same in layout and in color? Here’s something refreshing though. The recently released character posters for The Wolverine will definitely stand out. They were done in black and white using an ink medium. The Wolverine brings back Hugh Jackman in his most iconic role as Logan aka Wolverine.

Let me take you on a Spiral Buffet Restaurant Tour

A few months ago, I got to visit the new and improved Spiral Buffet Restaurant at Sofitel, a five star luxury hotel in Manila. The restaurant is so named for the grand spiral staircase serving as a strong and functional design focal point in the restaurant. Before filling my tummy with wondrous mouth-watering food, I took time to go around the 21 ateliers that Spiral Buffet Restaurant is famous for. Let me take you on a grand tour at Spiral Buffet Restaurant. This post is quite picture heavy and it might take a while for all the pictures to load but I promise you they’ll be worth it.

Man of Steel the Fate of your Planet Trailer

Thursday, May 23, 2013 , , 0 Comments

When the first few teaser trailers for Man of Steel was released, you couldn’t tell much about the plot. Yet Zack Synder’s version gave the impression that this was a more serious and darker Superman movie. Little by little the trailers released gave us glimpses of the characters and action shots from Superman himself but the latest one gives us an idea about the plot.

man-of-steel-movie-banner
The trailer entitled, Fate of your Planet reveals the enemy Zod and what he plans to do to get at Superman. The inevitable face-off can be seen during the last half of the trailer and it’s just massive. Sorry for the lack of a better word to describe it. Henry Cavill leads the cast as Clark Kent/Superman. I still can’t unsee some scenes in this movie that reminds me so much of his role the The Immortals. However, we shall see on June 12th if this is the Superman movie that we have been waiting to see. Watch the trailer below.

Who’s Up for Bird-Flavored Ice Cream?

Thursday, May 23, 2013 0 Comments

Remember when I posted about the fads and crazes coming out of Japan? There was this creative form of photography, then unique hairstyles and now we venture into food. If you think they’ve come up with all the possible flavors for ice cream, think again…here comes Bird-flavored. Say what? Oh yes, it’s bird-flavored ice cream. I know the question you’re going to ask next is who in the world would want to eat bird-flavored ice cream?
bird-ice-cream-02
Fortunately, the ice cream was just aptly named for the “seeds” that the kinds of bird assigned to each ice cream flavor eats. *whew* So as of now, there are three flavors, sparrow, parakeet and cockatiel. The sparrow-flavored contains grains and marshmallow, the parakeet is of honey and apple while the cockatiel has pumpkin and sunflower seeds.

See Jurassic Park again in 3d

Thursday, May 23, 2013 , 0 Comments

"Welcome to Jurassic Park"
Oh how those words gave me goosebumps when I heard it first on the big screen. I had watched Jurassic Park with my family and I remember the cinemas being packed. I also remember wearing red shoes. Haha not that it's relevant. Anyway, since seeing it the first time, it has been on my favorites list. I also saw the sequels after that but nothing really compares to the "awesomeness" of the first film.
jurassic-park-3d
Now it seems in the grand tradition of reformatting old movie favorites into 3d, they're bringing back Jurassic Park as well. Steven Spielberg's dinosaur masterpiece can once again be enjoyed by fans like me in glorious 3d format. Can you believe that it had been 10 years since it graced the cinemas?

2013 Book Review #23: Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare

Thursday, May 23, 2013 , 0 Comments

Clockwork Angel is the first book in The Infernal Devices series by Cassandra Clare. I decided to give this series a try after seeing some good reviews for it from my friends in Goodreads. Clockwork Angel centers on Tessa Gray and her discovery that she had a special ability. This certain ability classifies her a Downworlder. In an unusual turn of events, she finds herself in the care of Shadowhunters, who would normally persecute her kind.
book-review-clockwork-angel
Tessa Gray sought the help of the Shadowhunters furthermore to find her brother and maybe have the chance to take down the being called The Magister, the one who ordered for her abilities to be harnessed and the mastermind behind all the strange happenings in London.

When you think of Clockwork Angel as a whole and as the beginning book of a series, it offers so much in terms of character diversity. It's got Shadowhunters which I first read in the original Mortal Instruments series, there are vampires, demons, warlocks and a shapeshifter. However, after reading through another book by Cassandra Clare it reminded me so much about why I stopped reading the books from the Mortal Instruments after book 3. She's just one of those authors who creates a protagonist that annoys the heck out of me. Believe me, I've learned my lesson and never again will I subject myself to that torture.

Man of Steel Character Posters

Wednesday, May 22, 2013 , 0 Comments

The coming of the month of June also means the start of the countdown for one of the most anticipated films this year. Man of Steel is slated for release on June 12, 2013 and the promotions for the said movie is in full swing. As for me, I’m hoping that Zack Synder adds this movie as another blockbuster under his belt. Here are the recently released character posters for the movie. Featured are Henry Cavill as Superman, Jor-el, his father played by Russell Crowe and the villain Zod played by Michael Shannon.

Sneak Peek: Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique in X-Men: Days of Future Past

Wednesday, May 22, 2013 , 0 Comments

Director Bryan Singer has just recently released a tweeted photo of Jennifer Lawrence as she was being made up for her role as Mystique in X-Men: Days of Future Past. She is reprising her role from first playing it in X-Men: First Class. Just imagine how much work it entails for every shoot to get her looking like this.

Days of Future Past is a popular storyline in the comic book issues of The Uncanny X-Men. It involves a dystopian future where mutants were being hunted by sentinels. The future events were triggered by the X-Men’s failure to prevent the Brotherhood of Mutants from killing Senator Robert Kelly.  The present-day mutants were warned by Kitty Pryde’s future self. The movie X-Men: Days of Future Past will be seen in theaters on July 17, 2014.

Wednesday, May 22, 2013 , 0 Comments

One mellow Saturday afternoon, we decided to hang out for a bit at the DW (Digital Walker) Café in Eastwood. Right after browsing through the various products at the Digital Walker Store, we sat down in the café which had an inner store access. The café looked nice and it was pretty quiet inside.

Sleeping Aid: Celestial Seasonings Sleepytime Herbal Tea

Wednesday, May 22, 2013 , 0 Comments

For the past months, I've been having troubles with my sleep. No I don't think it's insomnia because I don't have any difficulty falling asleep but rather I wake up from a deep slumber in two to three hours and then get restless sleep after that. I often wake up tired and having lesser energy than usual. I know that it's from the combined stress and emotional distress I've been feeling from my personal life, the adjustments in our family and the work load that I have at the office. It's been tough just to clear my mind right before bedtime and get a good restful sleep.

I discovered the Celestial Seasonings Sleepytime Herbal Tea at the grocery at one time when I was due to replenish my tea stash at home. I've always been on the lookout for new teas that I haven't tried and this one stood out because of the sleeping bear on the box. I read the herbal ingredients and decided to try and see if it will help in my sleep.

Meet the Characters in Epic

Tuesday, May 21, 2013 , 0 Comments

What blew me away when I saw the first trailers of Epic were the lush 3d plantscapes and the great soundtrack that accompanied the trailer. Give me Snow Patrol any day. The hardworking animation team that created the fantastic visuals in the movie aimed to produce the highest form of realism more than any other animation film has released before. From the previews, they really do look amazing. The attention to detail was spectacular and the colors used were vibrant and easy on the eyes. Epic does not only boast a stunning 3d realism but also a star studded cast.

Hail the Pacific Rim Main Trailer

Monday, May 20, 2013 , 0 Comments

Great anticipation is building up for Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim as the main trailer for the movie was released. In this trailer, Manila figures prominently as the second city to be attacked by the sea monsters known as the Kaiju. I still get goosebumps whenever I see the Jaegers come into view. It seems like July can’t come sooner for us to enjoy the Jaegers in all their glory in the big screen. Which one will you root for?
pacific-rim-main-trailer-01
In Pacific Rim, the battle for Earth begins when mankind decided to fight back against the mighty Kaiju. Their main form of defense are the Jaegers, massive robots controlled by two pilots via a neural bridge. The Jaegers do their best but it seems that mankind is on the losing edge until they turn their last beacons of hope to two unlikely heroes and an obsolete Jaeger from the past. The film stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day and Ron Perlman.

Egg White Omelette

2013 Book Review #22 Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn

Sunday, May 19, 2013 , 0 Comments

I had delayed in reading another one of Gillian Flynn's novels after going through Dark Places at the advice of one of my Goodread's friends. When I finally did pore through the pages of Sharp Objects, the novel had me wincing and nauseous at some parts. In true Flynn fashion, she had once again presented a flawed protagonist that still makes the reader want her to have a happy ending.
book-review

In Sharp Objects, Camille was a journalist who had to go back to her hometown to cover a series of little girl murders. She was then revealed to be a "cutter" during the early parts of the book. As she continues her investigation, she is forced to confront her past and her repressed urges to cut herself once more. At age thirty, she has to deal with an estranged mother who hates her, a town that pretty much knows her dark secrets and a step sister who's in danger of becoming a victim herself.

I had already seen and read instances of cutting as a psychological sickness but I had never visually imagined it before. Well not after reading the very graphic descriptions in Sharp Objects. The pleasure of bringing hurt to other people was also touched on in this book and these were the parts that made me wince. Thank goodness that I couldn't hear the bones cracking.

While reading through Sharp Objects, I had a guess at who the killer might be and in the end I turned out to be right. Despite guessing at the right one, the revelation was still very much satisfying. The events unfolded in a truly surprising manner and they were evenly paced.

Great Examples of Wine Photography

Sunday, May 19, 2013 0 Comments

I had been watching a lot of Cougar Town lately and if you’ve seen the show, you’re most probably going to take note at how much the cast (and pretty much each episode) drinks wine. It made me think of how great wine can be paired with some food but mostly, the show kinda makes you want to drink wine everyday yourself. They just make it look so all so fun and classy. Oh well, I’ll just settle for the virtual kind. After scouring the web for some bits of wine photography, here are the ones that I found that caught my eye. You won’t believe just how few good ones there are out there.

The Wolf Pack is Back for Hangover Part 3

Thursday, May 16, 2013 , 0 Comments

In the movies, when a character asks out loud "what could possibly go wrong?" it's like an invitation to a chain of disastrous events. In the previous Hangover movies, this exact phrase had been taken to mean epic adventure, no holds barred antics and one crazy wild ride. In the same spirit, the Wolf Pack is back for a third and hopefully the last installment for the Hangover movie franchise.
hangover-3-movie
Hangover Part 3 once again brings together friends - Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis and Justin Bartha as Phil, Stu, Alan and Doug on another wild ride as they go back to Las Vegas where it all began. The movie starts out mellow as we see the guys settled back into their normal lives after the events of the first and second movie. Alan (Galifianakis) however wasn't content, he desperately sought to put meaning into his life and who better to help him but his friends. A seemingly innocent ploy to put a friend to the right path turns into, yep you've guessed it - a night that they won't soon forget.

What do you always End up Buying at the Grocery?

Wednesday, May 15, 2013 , 0 Comments

How many times has this happened to you? You went to the grocery to buy only two things and you end up going home with an armful of stuff. This happened to me recently, I passed by the grocery after work to buy some dog food. That would have cost me only about Php500.00 ($12.17) but I ended up going home with Php 2700 ($65.73) worth of groceries. Groan. Yeah I know. I won’t go into detail about the things I bought that time but it did get me thinking.

What are the things you always end up buying that are not in your grocery list? Well here’s mine.
Vegetable and Greens
This is the first area that I make a beeline to and somehow I can’t get past it without buying some salad greens, lemons and either some small potatoes or a bunch of cucumbers.

Watch the trailer for Elysium Starring Matt Damon

Tuesday, May 14, 2013 , , 0 Comments

In the movie Elysium, Matt Damon stars as Max who agreed to do a life-threatening mission that might tip the balance of equality. The year is 2159 and it seems that equality between classes do not exist between the extremely wealthy and the “others” left in a now-ruined Earth. The wealthy can afford to be in a pristine man-made station called Elysium but the “poor” must make do with the wastes of Earth. People do try to break into Elysium everyday and Secretary Delacourt (Jodie Foster) will stop at nothing to protect Elysium at all costs.

2013 Book Review #21 Trust no One by Linda Sue Park

Tuesday, May 14, 2013 , 0 Comments

When I had finished the entire 39 Clues series, I couldn’t wait to get started with the spin-off. The Cahills vs. Vespers is now on its 5th book with Trust no One and it had maintained the crazy fast-paced action that was very prominent in the original 39 clues series. The series is intended for a younger audience but the complexity of its plot makes it a great read for adults too.

trust-no-one-book-review
The crazy clue hunt to save 13 of the Cahill family still held hostage is still as manic as ever. This time the clues led them to get to know more about Archimedes and his works. Amy and Dan must again face seemingly insurmountable odds and fight the urge to turn on each other while they fight for the rest of their family.

Trust no One reveals the mole in the Cahill family and not just that, the possible identity of Vesper One too. Event after event kept me guessing about who will betray the Cahills next. When the endgame was finally revealed, I began to wonder how they will carry it out.

Trust no One was a quick read and as mentioned before, it was very fast-paced. This was better than the last book and while there was a lot revealed here, I can’t help but get the impression that Trust no One is a filler for setting up the events for the next book with a lot of cliffhangers. I hope the next one will answer a whole lot of questions.

Read the synopsis for Trust no One on Goodreads.

Manila set to host Fast and Furious 6 Asian Premiere

Tuesday, May 14, 2013 , 0 Comments

If you stayed to watch the teaser scene after the end credits of Fast and Furious 5, then it’s no surprise to you when the announcement for the 6th movie in the franchise came out. I am still in a cloud of disbelief even though I saw the teaser myself. Fast and Furious 5 would have been a great series ender but here they go again back for a 6th helping. I hear that a 7th movie is in the works too. Just how far will they milk this franchise? Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge fan of Vin Diesel and the Fast and Furious movies; I’m just a little bit worried that they’ll be bleeding the series dry of all the things that made it good.

After the events in Fast and Furious 5, Dom (Vin Diesel) and Brian’s (Paul Walker) crew may by $100M richer but will never be able to set foot on American soil. Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) meanwhile is on the trail of mercenaries led by newcomer Owen Shaw (Luke Evans) and is backed by his second, Letty (Michelle Rodriguez). Hobbs then seeks the help of Don and the crew in return for a full pardon and a chance to come home.

The Wearable Food Art series

Monday, May 13, 2013 , 0 Comments

If you think food and fashion don’t mix. Think again. Here’s yet another example that food and fashion can become great art. The thought does bring Lady Gaga’s meat dress to mind but though she claims that it is a statement, in no way will it be viewed as art. The Wearable Food Art Series of Korean artist Yeonju Sung is entirely different but created from a similar concept. His arts features consumable food and treats them into fashion constructions. His Wearable Foods series can sometimes be defined as sculptures but also encourages creative photography.

Jennifer Lawrence is Back in Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Monday, May 13, 2013 , , 0 Comments

When I saw the first Hunger Games movie, I was extremely disappointed with it. I loved the book series and I hated that the movie got it all wrong. I despised the thought that people who didn’t read the books got the wrong impression of the series. They probably weren’t able to understand all the anticipation that Hunger Games fans exhibited just before the movie got released. They probably wondered why so many were raving about the novels and yet the movie was so blah. Well, my enthusiasm for the second movie, Hunger Games: Catching Fire may have abated but I’m really hoping that they get it right this time around. There’s a new director so I think that’s a good start.

The latest teaser trailer for Hunger Games: Catching Fire looks pretty exciting. It’s been quite some time since I’ve last read the novel and I’ve been racking my brain for some of the scenes presented there. There’s not much to see about the other champions yet but already, the trailer promises a good movie.

Bullock and Clooney, Lost in the Perils of Space in Gravity

Monday, May 13, 2013 , , 0 Comments

They say that space is the final frontier, one that cannot be fully explored by an ordinary man yet. What if we suddenly can and be able to? One of man’s greatest fears when it comes to the final frontier is being lost in it. Can you imagine being lost in space?

Sandra Bullock stars as Dr. Ryan Stone, a medical engineer on her first shuttle mission with veteran astronaut, Matt Kowalsky played by George Clooney. Disaster struck when the shuttle was destroyed and with both of them tethered to each other and floating helplessly into the blackness of space. They had no contact with Earth, no possible chance of rescue and very little oxygen left.

The Ripe Tomato Hairdo

In our part of the world, one of the countries that usually make waves when it comes to anything fashion-related is Japan. They come up with the craziest designs and fads. While some may become a full-blown fashion trend, sometimes one has to have the right funky attitude to wear them. One of the latest trends out of a particularly creative salon called Trick Store is the Ripe Tomato. Take a look.

Yes it looks very literal but upon first look, I think it looks very cute and totally unique. Then again, think how it would look when it’s not unique anymore. Will it be amusing? A sight to behold? Or just downright weird?

Summer isn’t over yet in my part of the world but I think we’re just about done with the hot spells during the high time of the day. While summer is the best time to go to the beach, it’s also the season for dresses. Here are some that I saw from Anthroplogie that has captured my fancy.

10 Signs that You may have a Bad Candy Crush Addiction

Thursday, May 09, 2013 , , 0 Comments

I’m currently waiting for friends to send me three tickets in Candy Crush Saga so that I can cross over to the next area and on to level 156. Each night I make sure to play to see if I can get past a level or just to attend to the requests that my friends sent me. When I started to play Candy Crush Saga, I had no idea about how addicting it would be. I also didn’t expect to have most of my Facebook friends playing it too. Are you playing the game yourself? Can you and I be well addicted to the game?

10 Signs that you may have a bad Candy Crush Addiction

ONE
You can’t stop playing (obviously) but it’s a different level of addiction when you find ways even when you shouldn’t. For example, at work or in traffic on the road. You’ve also found ways to cheat to be constantly refreshed of lives and never having to wait.
