Wednesday, July 31, 2013 , 0 Comments

If you’re finding yourself just randomly browsing the Internet during your lunch break, you might want to check out these time waster websites. I’ve especially compiled the top 10 sites that I go to myself. Oh and don’t look at the term “time waster” so negatively, believe it or not, I’ve found some blogging inspiration in quite a few of them. Just be careful, you just might get into reading them that you forget to get back to work. Other than that, enjoy!

This is a site for dog lovers. They have a nice collection of funny dog memes, as well as dog portraits that you can admire as long as you like.

Steampunk Sculptures made out of Cardboard

Wednesday, July 31, 2013 0 Comments

I’ve always been a fan of anything steampunk since I’ve gotten to play Arcanum years before. I’ve since blogged about steampunk jewelry and steampunk literature and this time around, I found the most amazing steampunk sculptures so far. Guess what, I can’t hardly believe it either but these were made of cardboard!

The Conjuring Ready to Scare Audiences this August

Tuesday, July 30, 2013 , 0 Comments

For weeks now you’ve probably already noticed the scary looking stills for the movie The Conjuring. It’s the one with the wooden doll in braids that has a scary menacing look. Yeah you know what I’m talking about. By now you might have already heard just how much of a success this movie is in the US. So what’s the deal? Is there just really a large number of horror movie patrons there? For me, the appeal of The Conjuring is the fact that it involves accounts from the real survivors of the frightening ordeal.

2013 Book Review #36: The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult

Monday, July 29, 2013 , 0 Comments

I must admit that I chose my first Jodi Picoult novel based on the book cover but I had no idea what a great choice it was. I loved reading The Storyteller from start til end and truthfully, I didn’t expect that I would become a fan of the author after just reading one book but I can’t wait til I get to choose which book she had written I’ll read next.

Amusing Potato Food Art

Sunday, July 28, 2013 , 0 Comments

Peter Pink prides himself in the art world as the “nonsense maker” but if you ask me these amusing potato food art are anything but. Just take a look at these adorable potatoes basking in the sun with sunglasses on. I also love the contrast of the pink colors with the shades of brown too.

Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn in The Internship

Sunday, July 28, 2013 , , 0 Comments

This is not the first time that comedy duo Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn starred in the same film. This team-up was also seen in Starsky & Hutch and The Wedding Crashers. In The Internship, a somewhat older Owen and Vince comes to dabble in the corporate world amidst younger twenty something techies to vie for a much coveted job at Google. Nick (Owen Wilson) and Billy (Vince Vaughn) were forced to go on an internship at Google when the company they had worked for shut down.

The Purge Movie Review

Sunday, July 28, 2013 , 0 Comments

When I walked inside the Glorietta cinemas last Friday night, I had no idea that I was about to see the most disturbing movie that I have seen this year so far. It’s a movie that makes one question how you would envision the future. The plot for The Purge takes place in 2022, a timeline in the future that's not very far off and in the US, the economy seemed to be flourishing and unemployment was at a low of 1%. Yet the public majority was unhappy, why is that? The explanation for this was not entirely clear but it must have been so dire that the government felt the need to allow the people to give in to their animal urges and let loose for one night. The animal urges being acts of violence like maiming, killing, beating etc.

Get Luscious Lips with Revlon Colorburst Lip Butter

Sunday, July 28, 2013 , 0 Comments

One of the first products that I immediately wanted to try from the 2013 July BDJ Box was the Revlon Colorburst Lip Butter. I had been ecstatic that it was included in the box. Checking out the official product page from Revlon, would you believe that this particular line of lipstick has 20 available shades?! Oh wow. The one that was included in my BDJ Box was Cherry Tart and the other lipstick shades also had names that sounded so delish. Among them are Tutti Frutti, Fig Jam, Candy Apple, Juicy Papaya etc. The main ingredients in this particular lipstick are mango, shea and coconut butter, all of which are known to provide moisture.

Make Great Mindmaps with Mindomo

Saturday, July 27, 2013 , , 0 Comments

Since I’ve adopted blogging as a habit, I’ve used mindmaps and a designer notebook to draft my posts. This had been my blogging routine for years now but I wanted to explore making mindmaps using my tablet this time around. After meticulous searching at the Google Play Store, I’ve finally narrowed my finding to three. For this post, I’ll share my experience in using Mindomo. Mindomo is a free Android mindmapping app that you can download from the Google Play Store. It requires 15MB of storage space and if you’ve used a mindmap software before, then this will be a breeze to use. For newbies though, it does require a bit of feature exploration.

First step in using Mindomo to create a mindmap is by creating a central topic. As you can see here, this is my step by step walkthrough when I made my mindmap for my Warm Bodies review.

The Wolverine Movie Review

Friday, July 26, 2013 , 0 Comments

For both of the Wolverine movies released so far, they’ve always given off an impression of a dark storyline. Being not so familiar with the original comic book storyline for Wolverine, I was told that he had always been this mutant who had a troubled past resulting in a dark demeanor both for his present and future. Much like the origins movie, The Wolverine feels like it had been shot through a cool filter giving the film more blues, grey and black tones making it more somber and dreary. The perfect atmosphere to convey Wolverine’s dark storyline. It’s no wonder he’s always depicted with a scowl or snarling with adamantium claws out.

2013 Book Review #35 Reflex by Steven Gould

Friday, July 26, 2013 , 0 Comments

Reflex is the second book in the Jumper series and in my opinion, the best one of all three. This was the book that for me, made me put this particular book series in my “must-read” list. Steven Gould surpassed himself this time around because the writing was impeccably good. The book had a generally heavy mood to it but I relished each and every minute.

Here’s another movie that we can look forward to January of next year. I'm currently in the process of reading the book and I thought the series to be really promising. In this post you’ll find the character posters for the seven important characters in the Seventh Son.

Sadako inspired Milkshake

Wednesday, July 24, 2013 0 Comments

At what lengths would a marketing arm go through to promote a film? From what I’ve seen during the weeks before the release of Despicable Me 2, the McDonalds Happy Meal toys with those adorable minions were selling like hotcakes. It proved to be very effective because the anticipation for the film grew to a fever pitch. I think the efforts to promote a previously released film will have to be double than that. Which is why, it’s doubly innovative for the folks in Japan to come up with this - The Ring-inspired milkshake to promote the 3d release of Sadako in theathers.

Move over Barbie, You’re no Longer the Favorite

When I was a kid, I only had one Barbie doll and even though they say little girls LOVE to play with dolls, strangely, I didn’t feel any special fondness for my Barbie doll. I liked dressing her up sure, but other than that, I’d rather be reading instead. Well I guess, I started young as a nerd. :P There have been issues with Barbie’s figure for as long as I can remember. There have been articles discussing that she would be anatomically impossible if she were a real girl. Still, the folks at Mattel didn’t deem this too important an issue to change their most popular toy.
Barbie-mattel
Apparently in the parenting world, Barbie’s figure is a bad influence to little girls and it fosters early negative body image. According to this Time article that I read, parents are choosing to buy instead dolls that promote positive body image. One candidate is the American Girl Doll which is pictured below.

Tonto and The Lone Ranger Serve Up Action and Adventure in The Lone Ranger Movie

Tuesday, July 23, 2013 , 0 Comments

There was significant buzz for The Lone Ranger as soon as the first photos of Johnny Depp as Tonto were released. Once again, we see Johnny Depp totally immersed into the role, not minding the heavy make-up that he had to put on for the film. Such was the role of Tonto, while at the same time Armie Hammer wears the mask that made The Lone Ranger famous.

2013 Book Review #34 Grimoire of the Lamb by Kevin Hearne

Tuesday, July 23, 2013 , 0 Comments

When I started to read the books in the Iron Druid Chronicles, I just fell in-love with the series. I couldn’t get enough of the adventure of Atticus and Oberon. I started with the series with five books already published and I devoured them book after book. Sometimes even reading several books in between just so I could delay catching up to the latest book before the next one came out.

In Grimoire of the Lamb, I was thrilled to finally read about Egyptian mythology. In the novel, a very important grimoire (a book of magic) was stolen from Atticus' shop and it takes him to the land of Egypt on the tail of the thief. There he encounters thousands of cats and their goddess Bast and the Egyptian deity known as Sobek. They’re illustrated below.

Start a New Journaling Habit with Day Journal

Sunday, July 21, 2013 , 0 Comments

About two weeks ago, I decided to revive an old habit of mine back. I recall the joy of journaling at the end of the day to jot down some thoughts and events that have transpired which will now become memories. The benefits of journaling are numerous as some self-help websites will tell you but for me, it helps one become more appreciative of the events in one’s life and in a way it becomes therapeutic. For this, I began a quest to hunt for a good free journaling app for my Android gadgets. I’ve chosen to give Day Journal a try.

Day Journal is a free Android app from the Google Play Store and will just take about 2.9MB of storage space. Here’s how the dashboard of the app looks like.

Learn how to Make your Own Ice Cream with Illustrated Ice Cream Recipes

Sunday, July 21, 2013 , 0 Comments

Just yesterday at the grocery, I thought to buy some Ice Cream as our dessert after dinner last night. I was delighted by the many choices for flavor available but at the same time also disappointed because there wasn’t one that I wanted. It made me wish that I could just make my own ice cream instead. Can you really just make one at home? This reminded me of a site that I discovered though the Smashing Magazine newsletter.

Here are some of the recipes that I liked.

2013 Book Review #33: 11th Hour by James Patterson & Maxine Paetro

Sunday, July 21, 2013 , 0 Comments

I got my Women’s Murder Club fix once again with the next book in the series, 11th Hour by James Patterson. For the 11th novel, I was very happy that this was much like the earlier books in the series. What makes a good book for me is if I can’t put it down or in my case, if it leaves me lingering in my car wanting to listen as much as I can to the audiobook before I need to work. 11th Hour was just that.
11th-hour-book-review
PLOT
In this book, Lindsay Boxer finally gives birth to a baby and her married life will never be the same. However, the initial joys of parenthood is replaced by trouble in Lindsay’s personal life that is the toughest one that she has had to deal with yet. Despite the stress she’s been dealing with at home, she has to be on top of two cases two. One case is about a vigilante cop on the loose and the other one is a collector of severed heads. The plot of 11th Hour was very riveting and so engaging but the authors didn’t deem that enough, the other members of the Women’s Murder Club were also experiencing drama too.

IMPRESSIONS
There’s too much going on in this novel but I mean that in a good way. It reminded me why I fell in-love with the series in the first place. The writing just makes you care so much with what happens to the characters. It got my heart racing and I’m not ashamed to admit that I got affected with what was happening in Lindsay’s life. The cases were elaborate but believable. It’s a contrasting look at two extreme facets of the evils of human nature. One that is twisted by cynical reasoning and the other had been the product of a macabre upbringing.

How to Train your Dragon 2 Trailer

Saturday, July 20, 2013 , , 0 Comments

Three years ago, when I saw How to Train your Dragon in the cinemas, I immediately loved the friendship of Hiccup and Toothless. It was after seeing that movie when I learned that it was based on the first book of a popular young readers’ book series and quite possibly, there was a sequel in the making. True enough, How to Train your Dragon 2 will delight fans of the book in 2014. Toothless and Hiccup  (voiced by Jay Baruchel) are once again in an unparalleled adventure that would sure to delight and entertain audiences of all ages.

Friday, July 19, 2013 0 Comments

My work week reached a great end when I finally got to open my 2013 July BDJ Box at home and unlike the previous BDJ Boxes, this was the biggest package yet. I got to open two boxes! Oh yes two. One was full of Dove products and the other one was filled with beauty loot. Before opening them up, I couldn’t help but notice how good the package smelled. It took all the resistance not to open the boxes at the office, I had wanted to share the moment with my sister. So for the 2013 July BDJ Box that is filled with pampering products, here’s the line-up.

2013 Book Review #32 Jumper by Steven Gould

Friday, July 19, 2013 , 0 Comments

I stumbled upon this series by chance when I remembered the movie of the same title which starred Hayden Christensen, Rachel Bilson and Samuel L. Jackson. It was timely that I was in between book genres and wanted some sci-fi adventure for a change. I rather enjoyed the movie so I got a bit curious when I read the comments section for Jumper by Steven Gould on Goodreads. Most of the book reviews I saw were above average but I noted on the negative and sometimes enraged feedback on the movie adaptation. I wondered why.
jumper-book-review
PLOT
David Rice found out at an early age that he can teleport. Probably born from the need to get away from his abusive father and the social outcast that he was at school. He ran away when he found that he’s got a chance and from then on found means to survive on his own. He funded his lifestyle with robbing banks and avoiding being caught. He found love with Millie and finally his mother. However after suffering a traffic circumstance, Davy finds himself on a path of vengeance as he tried to make people pay for his suffering. However, these activities raised red flags and soon local authorities and the NSA are on his tail.

IMPRESSIONS
After reading the book, I understood what enraged fans of the book. The movie only retained some key aspects from the original novel and embellished on a lot to make its plot more dramatic. The paladins were nowhere mentioned in the book and it wasn’t at all necessary. The novel was okay but I found that it had dragged on for a bit in some chapters. I also didn’t like that it was mostly about vengeance but it was a good insight into what Davy can do with his teleporting abilities.

Learn some Kaiju Trivia while Pacific Rim Dominates Cinemas

Thursday, July 18, 2013 , 0 Comments

I had a great start to my work week when I had watched my second serving of Pacific Rim which was delightfully more awesome to watch the second time around. Well it was also great to have such an enthusiastic geek beside me. In the first four days of its showing here in the Philippines, it had already earned Php 83.25M making it the second biggest opening on record for Warner Bros. The biggest was Man of Steel last June. Pacific Rim is one of the must-see films this year and make it a point not to miss it. Meanwhile, let me interest you with some Kaiju trivia from the film.

Trying out the New Nescafe Frappe

Thursday, July 18, 2013 0 Comments

Last week, my sister asked me to buy her some stuff to include in my grocery list. So there I was at the coffee isle and was scouring the shelves for the type of coffee that she wanted. I always find it hard to see the Nescafe Cappuccino packets with its faded brown tones among the more colourful ones from other coffee brands. I noticed that there was a new addition to the coffee product line of Nescafe on the shelves. I got curious enough to try out the Nescafe Frappe and I knew my sister loved iced coffees.

There were two kinds: Cookies ‘n Cream and Choco ‘n Mallows. Both have the same Nescafe Frappe taste but is given a subtle flavor by the cookie sprinkles and the mallows. Of the two, I’m still fonder of the plain iced coffee taste without the additional flavoring. Let me tell you why.

Terry Crews Cosplays his Role in Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2

Wednesday, July 17, 2013 , , 0 Comments

I will probably most remember Terry Crews singing along to the Michelle Branch song in White Chicks. That had been a hilarious scene but this buff actor showed that he doesn’t only look and do great in comedy roles but in action films as well. Him firing off that big machine gun in The Expendables was just too awesome to forget. Once again, Terry Crews shows extreme enthusiasm for his role in Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, where he lends his voice for the character of Earl Deveraux. He was even shown to cosplay the role.

Will you try an Escargot Facial?

If you look through to the beginning of time, you’ll trace man’s never-ending quest for eternal youth and beauty. This quest brings about the weirdest forms and practices that involve concoctions and procedures that can be seen as very untraditional and by all means out of the ordinary. When I saw this news yesterday, I couldn’t help but be fascinated and grossed out at the same time. Will women really try this out regardless of how unconventional it is?

Unleash the Fury of The Wolverine

Monday, July 15, 2013 , , 0 Comments

I’ve always perceived The Wolverine to be unpredictable and a bit too on edge. You’ll never know what will set him off and where his fury might take him. He’s one of the most iconic characters in the Marvel Universe and his adamantium skeleton and claws make him truly indestructible. Struggling with immortality and his inner demons, Logan’s ability to heal himself makes him a formidable fighter but also one that experiences true loneliness.

A century had passed and The Wolverine finds himself in modern Japan where he’s on the run with a mysterious and beautiful heiress. J.K. Rowling’s New Novel Under a Pseudonym

Monday, July 15, 2013 0 Comments

book-reviewJust last week I’ve been contemplating on re-reading some of my Harry Potter books again and then found myself wondering why I haven’t read Casual Vacancy yet. If you recall, there was significant buzz surrounding that new novel released by J.K. Rowling post-Harry Potter. However, that didn’t seem to have much of the charm as the HP books had even though J.K. Rowling has a large fan base. It’s no wonder why J.K. Rowling released a novel under the pseudonym of Robert Galbraith. The novel is titled, The Cuckoo’s Calling and was said to have been published last April and had only sold about a thousand copies.

The Cuckoo’s Calling had received a good rating of 4.1 on Goodreads even without the readers knowing who the real author was. So I guess the ploy worked. J.K. Rowling can now indeed call herself a crime/mystery novelist without worrying about the pressure brought about by her name. Three months in though and the secret is out. Is this another ploy to get the sales for the book up? Could be. The main character of the novel is Cormoran Strike, which is a very unusual name for me. The fact that there are good reviews for this book made me curious enough to look it up. How about you? WIll you read this anytime soon?

Read the synopsis for The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galbraith (J.K. Rowling) on Goodreads.

2013 Book Review #31: 10th Anniversary by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro

Saturday, July 13, 2013 , 0 Comments

20th-anniversary-james-pattersonI’ve been following the Women’s Murder Club series ever since I’ve picked up the first book. Now 10 books in and the series looked to be going strong. I find that it’s the series that I always default going back to everytime I need a crime novel fix. 10th Anniversary still follows the crime adventures of Det. Lindsay Boxer, Chief Medical Examiner Claire Washburn, journalist Cindy Thomas and Assistant to the DA, Yuki Castillano, who fondly call themselves the Women’s Murder Club.

The book follows the development of two cases that places both Lindsay and Yuki both at their wit’s end trying to solve them in time. One case was of girl found almost dead on a highway and who had just apparently given birth but with no trace of his/her child with her. The other one was of a trial for a woman who was accused of killing her husband. Like the rest of the books, stories about the lives of the women continue on as well. Lindsay is finally married!

The cases in this book were nowhere as near as engaging as the ones in the early books but if you’re a loyal fan like me, I couldn’t help but read anyway. I don’t know if it was for the nostalgia or something else but I couldn’t put it down. This was a quick read and still has most of Patterson’s flairs in writing. This brings to mind though, just how long will the book series run for?

Moisturizing as a Habit: Ahava Essential Day Moisturizer

Saturday, July 13, 2013 , 0 Comments

One of the beauty products that I got from the BDJ Box Elite is the Ahava Essential Day Moisturizer. In order to take good care of your skin, it is important for you to moisturize. Why is it important? When your skin is dry, it tends to produce more oil. Oil on your skin especially your face leads to pimples and breakouts. Your skin is also more prone to wrinkles if it’s dry. This is why next to lip gloss, it’s my most favorite beauty product.

I tried out Ahava Essential Day Moisturizer for a week just to see what it could do for my skin. Directions for its use says that it should be used directly on freshly cleansed face and before your usual skin care routine. On the first day of use, I noticed that my skin became a bit more oily than usual. I blotted this out with an oil blotter and patted it dry with a compact powder and proceeded about with my day.

A Tale of Jaegers and Kaiju: Pacific Rim Movie Review

Saturday, July 13, 2013 , 0 Comments

Last Wednesday, I got to be part of an awesome movie event. The day (or in this case night) had finally come, I would finally see one of the most highly anticipated movies of the year. I had very high expectations for Pacific Rim. I even wore my new teal pants. By now you’re probably seen all the buzz in various social media networks about this movie and if you’re wondering what the fuss is all about, then read on. Don’t just let the trend sway you, let me make a more convincing argument about why you should see it this weekend. You need not worry, I won’t be writing any spoilers here.

PLOT
A portal was opened in the Earth’s core where an alien race called the Kaiju can freely pass to pillage the Earth. It becomes evident that they were sent to invade and to exterminate the human race. The term Kaiju came from Japan which means “strange beast”. The first Kaiju to set foot on Earth was named Trespasser and destroyed the Golden Gate Bridge in 2013.
Trivia: The most famous Kaiju is Godzilla.

2013 Book Review #30: Nine’s Legacy by Pittacus Lore

Thursday, July 11, 2013 , 0 Comments

book-review-nines-legacyI’ve been following The Lorien Legacy Series by Pittacus Lore ever since I saw I am Number Four at the cinemas. My favorite members of the Garde are still Six and Nine. After reading Six’s story, I couldn’t wait to find out what the story of the other Loriens were like. I was really glad when this short story of Nine’s life was released. Nine grew up to be a strong fighter and invaluable member of the Garde even if he was raised very different from the other kids of Lorien. Nine and Sandor his cephan were living at the Penthouse of the John Hancock Center.

Nine started out as scared and weak but Sandor worked hard to train him. However, his hardwork was not enough because he lacked the discipline and the passion to do so. It was only after suffering a tragic loss that he finally found the motivation to find the reason for the battle.

July is French month at Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila, a five star luxury hotel which will feature a variety of events honoring the holidays and icons in France. At Spiral Buffet Restaurant, you can savor the dishes of French cuisine through themed menus that highlights amazing food from different regions of France. The said themed menu is in honor of Tour de France, the legendary and most historical cycling competition that is joined by hundreds of riders around the world. Each week at Spiral will be a gastronomic tour and it’s a great way to get to known traditional French food. I got to sample these wonderful dishes recently and it was a very good experience.

To start off our meal was a wine tasting by Mr. Damien Marchenay, the director of food and beverage. At the wine-tasting, I got excited by the sight of all those wine glasses and the cheese platters. We were served to sample three kinds of wine.

Trailers for both movies can already be seen in cinemas but to save you the trouble, the movie trailers for both films can be viewed in this post.

The Conjuring features the investigations of Ed and Lorraine Warren played by Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson to help a family living in a secluded farmhouse. Roger and Carolyn Perron (Ron Livingston and Lili Taylor) are the residents of the house who were plagued by a demonic entity. As is the case when the subject is very unpredictable, The Warrens soon find themselves with something that would make them fear for their very lives.

The Layers and Scents of the Selena Gomez Perfume

Wednesday, July 10, 2013 , 0 Comments

Everytime I open a BDJ Box, not only do I get excited for the variety of make-up items that I find in there but I also get giddy when there are perfume samplers inside. For the April BDJ Box, I got to try the Selena Gomez Perfume which came in this cute spritzer with a magenta nozzle. Before I get into detail about how the perfume smelled like. Let’s take a look first at the celebrity behind the perfume.

Selena Gomez is presently 21 years old and one of the most successful teen stars from Disney. She is most probably best known for her role as Alex Russo in Wizards of Waverly Place, her show on the Disney channel. She stands tall at 5’5” and was most recently in a relationship with Justin Bieber. She appears to be a host of a lot of talents because not only can she act, she has also recorded an album entitled “Kiss & Tell” which gained a Gold record award in sales. She is also reportedly about to launch her own clothin line at Kmart – “Dream out Loud”.
