Adorable Lego Brick Sketches

Friday, August 30, 2013 , 0 Comments

Give a child some Lego bricks to play with and there’s no telling what he’s bound to create but give an artist some Lego bricks and voila! That’s what I kept thinking when I saw these creations from Lego builder Chris McVeigh. He has taken Lego brick creations to a whole other level. As I was browsing his gallery of creations thus far, I can’t choose a single favorite. They’re all so good!

Browsers Envisioned as Fashion Ensembles

Taking inspiration from the logos of the top 5 internet browsers today, Viktorija Pashuta decided to take spearhead a project which takes into account the characteristics from the logos and best traits of each browser and turn them into fashion ensembles. Being a frustrated fashion designer myself, I can’t help but admire the creativity involved when designing the clothes to illustrate the concept. Check it out they came out really good!

App Review: Fetch (App Discovery)

Wednesday, August 28, 2013 , 0 Comments

One of the things I love to do from time to time is to browse the Google Play Store. I can lose a few hours looking for certain apps that serve a specific purpose or trying out apps to review that haven’t gotten much exposure yet. Since I didn’t have much luck with “app discovery” apps before, I still have yet to find an app like that with the right features I need that will make use of it worthwhile. So I’m trying out a few, first up is Fetch from BestAppsMarket.com. See if it’s up to the task.

Fetch is available for free download at the Google Play Store for a 2.5MB install. Initial launch of the app will be a bit slow since it will calculate your app activities to generate suggestions for you. Here’s how the dashboard looks like. Since I had installed it on my tablet, it defaults to landscape view.

Marvel Studios has just released the character posters for Thor: The Dark World featuring Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Tom Hiddleston as Loki. Both actors are reprising their roles from the previous Thor film. Thor: The Dark World is expected to be released in Philippine cinemas on October 30. In the movie that looks to be even better than the first film, Thor will be tasked with the impossible responsibility of protecting the whole of the Nine Realms from darkness and destruction from an ancient race known as the Malekith.

Yes, Ben Affleck is the New Batman and There will be no Bashing Here

Monday, August 26, 2013 , 0 Comments

When the announcement flared up on the internet about Ben Affleck being the new Batman, I was knee-deep in work tasks and I had thought that it was someone’s idea of a joke. It was only when I got home and saw the official press release in my inbox did I realize that it wasn’t just some crazy meme going around. Yes indeed, Ben Affleck is the new Batman.

Well of course, the die-hard Batman fans did their fair share of bashing for the past few days that I couldn’t help but think about some things.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones Movie Review

Monday, August 26, 2013 , 0 Comments

When I had started to read The Mortal Instruments book series, I was immediately swept into the world of Shadowhunters and this was what I wanted to see in the movie. I wanted to see my favorite characters, the institute and the legendary Shadowhunters come to life on the big-screen with this film adaptation that I was hoping that they would do right. I read the books until book number three and so I’m a bit acquainted at the complexity of its main plot.

The World of Shadowhunters
In The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, Clary Fray (Lily Collins) finds out that her mother, Jocelyn (Lena Headey) had been keeping a large part of her life a secret. That secret was the world of Shadowhunters and how they were caught in the middle of it. When Jace Wayland (Jamie Campbell Bower) rescues Clary after her mother was kidnapped, he took her to the Institute, headquarters for the Shadowhunters.

Glam it Up with Victoria’s Secret Vixen Perfume

Sunday, August 25, 2013 0 Comments

I found this in my sister’s perfume collection and I just couldn’t help but be attracted to it. Just looking at the perfume bottle makes me want to dress up in full-force glam. The design of the bottle is very sexy with a color palette that just exudes seductiveness.

The Victoria’s Secret Vixen Perfume has notes of apple blossom, freesia and vanilla. Like I’ve mentioned, it’s ideal if you want to glam it up for a night out and you’ll instantly add a dose of a sexy vibe and confidence to your strut. I could imagine Carrie Bradshaw going for this scent herself.

2013 Book Review #41: This Book is Full of Spiders (John Dies at the End #2)

Sunday, August 25, 2013 , 0 Comments

Don’t worry, the title is not really a spoiler. This Book is Full of Spiders is the sequel to the much-loved first book, John Dies at the End by David Wong. I discovered this wonderful bit of humor and science fiction with a bit of horror through a fellow geek and friend of mine and loved from cover to cover. The second book takes place much later from the events in the first book and its three foremost characters (John, David and Amy) have now settled pretty much in the swing of their daily lives.
this-book-is-full-of-spiders-book-review
Well, that’s how it starts anyway. It’s quiet until everything is swallowed by chaos and the fun times begin. This Book is Full of Spiders has more action, more conspiracy theories and more gory stuff than the first book which all in all makes for a very entertaining read especially if you’re having a slow week.

What are those spiders anyway?
One day, David discovers an alien-looking spider in his home. Knowing how dangerous it is, he sought the help of his best friend John in order to contain it. In true John and David style however, they only succeeded to make matters worse and pretty soon, the spider infestation has spread throughout town. The main problem is that they’re the only ones who can see them because of the soy sauce that they took.

If you’ve been taken over by spiders then you’re pretty much dead. They will latch onto your brain and make you do horrible things. If you’ve ever seen zombies, a spider infested individual is much worse.

The adventure begins
You don’t need to read the first book to enjoy this one but I tell you honestly that you’ll be missing out. It might give you a better understanding of the soy sauce and of the personalities of both John and David. The story within the novel This Book is Full of Spiders is told in the point of view of John, David and Amy.

What I’m Loving Right Now

Taking a break from the upcoming movie news, book reviews and beauty products, I’m going to list down in this post the things that I’m loving right now. These are just the small things that I’ve learned to appreciate in the past weeks and have kept me busy during idle times. Some have also kept me distracted from the worries that have been keeping me up til the wee hours of the morning.
Book
I’ve just recently finished Friendship bread by Darien Gee and I loved it. It might seem a far cry from the crime and fantasy novels that I’m so fond of reading but every now and then, I do crack open a light novel as a break from the action-packed books. This one proved to be a very good choice.

Movie Preview: The Maze Runner

Wednesday, August 21, 2013 , 0 Comments

When I got to read The Maze Runner by James Dashner back in 2011, I loved it so much that I finished it in one afternoon. There are so many unforgettable characters that I can’t wait to come alive on the big-screen with this upcoming movie of the same title from 20th Century Fox. I want to see Thomas (Dylan O’Brien), Newt (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) and Minho (Ki Hong Lee) who are among my favorite characters in the novel. Most of all, I want to see the maze and the Grievers too.

The Gladers

In the movie The Maze Runner, Thomas wakes up in a pit to a group of boys living in a place called The Glade. The Glade seems to be a safe place but at night, the inhabitants need to hide inside the wall lest they want to be killed by The Grievers. Monsters who patrol the maze at night. Thomas has no memories at all of his life beyond reaching The Glade nor his inexplicable desire to see what’s beyond the wall inside the maze.

Funko Pop! Vinyl Toys: Toy Wishlist

Wednesday, August 21, 2013 , 0 Comments

Last weekend while passing by a comic/hobby store at a mall, I noticed these cute vinyl toys on display and I couldn’t help myself, they were just too cute! I saw the My Little Pony toys first and it took all of my restraint not to buy one. When I got home, I couldn’t wait to see what other Funko Pop! Vinyl Toys there are available in the market. Here are the ones that I found to be most irresistable because they came from shows and movies that I loved. These are from the online store called BB Toy Store and each vinyl toy sells for about $9.99 each.

Vigilantes Abound: Kick-Ass 2 Movie Review

Tuesday, August 20, 2013 , 0 Comments

I was pretty excited to watch the movie Kick-Ass 2 especially since I had loved the first movie. Plus, I also wanted to see what Hit Girl and Kick-Ass had been up to since the events of the first movie. Even if the movie was named after the vigilante Kick-Ass with his alter-ego Dave, it was really Hit Girl and Big Daddy who provided the dose of superhero action in the first movie.

Start of a New Age
Kick-Ass 2 takes place after the events of the first film with Dave (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and Mindy (Chloe Grace Moretz) back in school and with Mindy under the care of Det. Marcus Williams (Morris Chestnut). Dave was secretly continuing his vigilante activities in a city that has made it legal for regular citizens to dress up in costume and patrol the streets. Dave urged Mindy to train him but after getting busted about hitting the streets as Hit Girl again, Mindy was forced to retire her costume.

What’s for Dinner? Recipes App Review

Monday, August 19, 2013 , , 0 Comments

Lately, I’ve been taking more and more part at the kitchen trying out recipes and I’ve been trying to find an app that’s good for finding recipes while at the same time makes it easy for me to generate a shopping list too. So the search is on. The first free Android app on my list that I tried was What’s for Dinner? Recipes Lite. You can download this for free from the Google Play Store or buy the Pro version (What’s for Dinner? Recipes +) for $4.99 [PHP 217.95].
How to Use the App
Using the app was pretty easy and it doesn’t take too long to figure everything out. Upon initial download and launching of the app, you are taken to the main dashboard. The first step is to search for a recipe that you want to keep.
whats-for-dinner-4
The app will display a set of recipes that will match your search description. If several recipes in the database have been found from several sources, you can choose which one to pick by the rating for each. Once you’ve chosen which one, just click on the “save recipe button” so that the recipe will be bookmarked in your database.whats-for-dinner-recipes-app-review-01

Screaming out Loud: The Conjuring Movie Review

Monday, August 19, 2013 , 0 Comments

With scared anticipation, I joined anxious but excited fellow movie buffs at the Philippine premiere of The Conjuring. We all know that we were about to watch probably the scariest movie of the year. While most of us had heard about the positive reviews from the US release as well as tweets and Facebook updates from people who have already seen the movie during the sneak previews, we still couldn’t possibly be prepared. As for me, I wanted to experience this for myself and I was curious at how scary the movie really was. At the same time, I was also dreading how scared I will be after the movie.

The ordeal involved a malevolent group of spirits intent on harming the entire family, In desperation, Carolyn Perron (Lili Taylor) sought the help of famous demonologists, Lorraine (Vera Farmiga) and Ed Warren (Patrick Wilson). After experiencing for themselves how haunted the house was, The Warrens decided to help but it turned out to be the most difficult and disturbing case of their entire career.

2013 Book Review #40 Cold Days by Jim Butcher

Thursday, August 15, 2013 , 0 Comments

My faith in Harry Dresden had been restored with this book. I had begun to falter with the disappointment of the last book, Ghost Story. It’s a good thing that Jim Butcher is back with his writing groove again and by far, Cold Days reads like the very first few novels in the series when the main story was just picking up. This was an all-out action-packed story that was interesting from the very page to the last.

The Path of the Winter Knight
Harry Dresden is now the Winter Knight despite his efforts to deceive Queen Mab with his death but despite being oriented into the title, he refuses to be Queen Mab’s pet. Still, his new “job” does require him to carry out her wishes and he had just received his first task to murder an immortal. Apart from that, there is trouble with his island. Demonreach is getting to be the source of something that would mean the destruction of Chicago and it is also his responsibility to stop it. When he does carry out the job, will Harry succumb to the evils that accompany the power of the Winter Knight? How will he do it without losing his very soul?

Feel Good and Be Inspired by the Comedy Movie, The Internship

Wednesday, August 14, 2013 , 0 Comments

To date, one of the most powerful and influential companies in the world is Google. Their presence on the internet and in people’s lives is so profound that it was deemed worthy for their company name to be merited into the English language as a verb that means to search for something on the Internet. This also explains why so many people want to work there and after watching The Internship starring Vince Vaugh and Owen Wilson, I can understand why.

Chloe Grace Moretz Reprises her Role as Hit Girl in Kick-Ass 2

Wednesday, August 14, 2013 , 0 Comments

One young talented young lady to watch out for in Hollywood is Chloe Grace Moretz who became more known for her role as the purple-haired hero Hit Girl in the 2010 film, Kick Ass. She starred alongside a not so well-known Aaron Taylor-Johnson then. However, since that movie, her roles in movies have been pouring in and the characters she’s been playing are very diverse. She was recently seen in Dark Shadows and Hugo.

Design your Own Pendant at Loquet

You only have to mouse over and click on the side categories and choose which design you like best. As you do so, just click on the “add to locket” popup when it appears on the design that you chose.

Introducing a New Kind of Grape

Monday, August 12, 2013 0 Comments

Locally, grapes are usually in season around Christmas time and these become succulent healthy snacks for everyone. In California, they’ve developed a new grape hybrid that looks very much different from the purple fruit beads that we’re used to. Witch Fingers are elongated in shape like some kinds of chili peppers and are still the same familiar grape color.

What I wanted to see in Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters from the Book

Monday, August 12, 2013 , , 0 Comments

Last week, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters (read my review) opened in theaters on August 7 and it was one anticipated movie especially for fans of the book series written by Rick Riordan. While I wished that they didn’t change the storyline that much, it was still an entertaining movie to see and made me hope for the film adaptation of the succeeding books but in the hands of a much better director and writer than this last one.

Percy gets much needed advice and tools from Hermes, Luke's father.

So just how different was the movie from the novel? They still pretty much maintained the same plot with Percy and Clarisse questing for the Golden Fleece but they changed the manner in which the quest had begun. Here are some parts from the book that I wanted to see in the movie.

2013 Book Review #39 Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Third Wheel

Sunday, August 11, 2013 , 0 Comments

I always enjoy reading the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books as an in-between book for more serious novels. They provide a good break from the fantasies and crime novels that I love so much. Also, I just can’t help but be charmed once again by the whimsical and wonderful cartoons within these books.
diary-wimpy-kid-third-wheel
In The Third Wheel, Greg recounts his very earliest childhood memories back from when he was still in his mother’s womb. It was hilarious to read about how right from the start he already knew what he wanted from his parents. He also recalls how he thought he was an only child and he meets Rodrick. Then comes the time when Manny came into the world and he began to be the big brother this time around.

While the flashbacks from his childhood past were amusing to read, The Third Wheel tells more about Greg Heffley and his journey into teenhood. Of course, what would growing up be without embarrassing moments with your mom right? Greg experiences this firsthand while he’s trying very hard to impress a girl. Then came the chaperoned date and you’ll laugh at how Greg and Rowley experiences this for themselves.

The Third Wheel maintains the charm from the first books. By far, it is the first of the series that has a linear timeline and it was nice to see a sense of direction when it comes to the reaching the book’s main plot. I’m looking forward to the next book.

Enjoy Good Rewards with the Starbucks Card

Saturday, August 10, 2013 0 Comments

As proof of listening to customer feedback, Starbucks had recently launched its card program and while I’ve seen posts and Facebook status updates from many of my blogger friends, I only got to avail of the Starbucks card this morning. It’s pretty easy to get one too. I just asked the barista at the counter if I could purchase one and she patiently explained the mechanics concerning the card to me. Technically, the Starbucks card is free but you do have to spend real money to load it with credits. The minimum amount that you can load is PHP300 with the maximum being PHP10,000. You can also choose among two designs for the card, coffee or tea. I chose the coffee design.

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters Movie Review

Friday, August 09, 2013 , 0 Comments

When the first film came out for The Lightning Thief, there had been rumors that there wouldn’t be a second film despite its success. Three years after, imagine the excitement when I learned about Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters. Being such a fan of the book series, I couldn’t wait to see the film adaptation of the second book. As far as the series goes, the second book marked the beginning of a series of events that would shape Percy’s destiny. The books got better and better after it.
