Dream Hospital Game Review

Thursday, September 21, 2017 , 0 Comments

I have been on the lookout for a hospital sim game for quite some time. Call it nostalgia but I still can remember the happy times I’ve played Theme Hospital in my childhood. When will they make one?! I think I’ve found one that’s almost like Theme Hospital, take note that it’s a close almost. The game is Dream Hospital which is free for download from the Google Play Store and I’ve been playing for at least three weeks now. The game features paid add-ons but if you have enough patience, there’s no need to shell out the extra cash. It does require an active internet connection though, that’s the only downside I can see. One thing is for sure, Dream Hospital can get quite addicting.

New Trailer for Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

Thursday, September 21, 2017 , , , 0 Comments

Jumanji, now that’s a movie I wouldn’t mind seeing over and over. I loved the first film and I was more than happy when they announced a sequel to the film. Finally! It looks like the movie’s storyline will pick up two decades after the events of the first movie. The movie will be headlined by Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, Nick Jonas and Bobby Cannavale. Just seeing those three names alone, The Rock, Jack Black and Kevin Hart, had me sold. I’m making sure that I won’t miss this movie.

Of Kingsman, Aged Drinks and The Golden Circle

Tuesday, September 19, 2017 , 0 Comments

A Kingsman: The Golden Circle Movie Review
About three years ago, a gentleman spy film movie by the name of Kingsman: The Secret Service was like a breath of fresh air to the standard norm of spy films these days. The movie was a blockbuster hit, even though the cast is headlined by someone relatively unknown, it had the right formula. It had a charming cast, it had two super stars in supporting roles and the film was actually fun and entertaining. As far as spy films go, Kingsman didn’t take itself very seriously and that’s okay. It won everyone’s approval.

Death Note on Netflix

Tuesday, September 12, 2017 , 0 Comments

My fiancé had been wanting for me to see the Death Note movies for a while now and he was so excited when he saw that it would soon be available on Netflix. Last week, it finally was and while winding down for the night, he put it on. Halfway through it, he was already snoring. Hahaha. Like most avid fans, they didn’t like the Netflix version but for me though, I liked it. In all honesty, I haven’t seen the Japanese version, nor the anime series as well so I have no basis for comparison. I liked it, I really did, well except for the girl, I hated the girl.

The New Pennywise and The Losers Gang

Monday, September 11, 2017 , 0 Comments

An IT Movie Review

I have a confession to make, the first novels I collected when I was a teenager were Stephen King novels. I pooled the money I saved from my weekly baon to buy from thrift bookstores. My books were “pre-loved”, dog-eared but I cherished them anyway. I love reading horror novels but I’m a wuss when it comes to watching horror films. I guess it’s a whole lot different when you see the visual representation of the monsters right in front of you on the big screen. I guess it makes it real. I had read the novel so long ago and I read a quick refresher before seeing the film. Of course, I remembered Pennywise but it took a bit of coaching for me to remember the rest.
IT-movie-review-001

At the IT movie premiere last week, it all came rushing back. Suddenly I was back in Derry, running away with The Losers gang, getting mad at Henry Bowers and closing my eyes as Pennywise (Bill Skarsgard) moved in for the kill. No wonder he became an icon as far as the genre was concerned.

The Innocent and the Beguiled

Monday, September 11, 2017 , 0 Comments

Last week, I got to see two awesome movies. One of which was directed by Sofia Coppola and the other was written by one of my early favorite authors. Both were remakes of old films and both were done wonderfully. The Beguiled originally was released starring Clint Eastwood back in 1971, now it was given fresh faces, a slightly toned down approach but still very powerful in its psychological connotations. The movie was set during the time of the Civil War when a Union soldier sought shelter from the war in a private women’s dorm presided by Miss Martha (Nicole Kidman).
the-beguiled-movie-review-007
Remember back in those days, women were not as free as they are now and there are certain manners and decorum to be observed by both women and men. One man and several women under one roof could only spell disaster? Well, if you thought it would then you have a good grasp of how human nature works.

Quick Japanese Food Fix at Don Bao

Monday, September 04, 2017 0 Comments

Last week, our impromptu dinner out took us to nearby Brixton St., more specifically at Don Bao. My fiance was having curry cravings because he’s been clocking in a lot of minutes in Persona 5 so there’s been a lot of Japanese food related cravings. Anyway, even though I had been nursing a bad cough that day, I gladly joined him.
His meal of choice was this Katsu Curry Don at Php 270. Fiance said the taste was okay he wished that there were more curry sauce though.

The Other Stars of American Made

Saturday, September 02, 2017 , , 0 Comments

I'm really in awe at how fast Domhnall Gleeson rose to Hollywood stardom after his role as Bill Weasley in the Harry Potter movies. He had gotten several major roles in past big movies and it looks like there's no stopping his good luck. The immensely talented actor had starred in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Revenant, Unbroken and Brooklyn. This time around he'll be starring opposite Tom Cruise in the upcoming film, American Made.

American Made (2017) american-made-domhnall-gleeson-002
American Made is based on real events where Barry Seal (Tom Cruise) was recruited by the CIA to take part in a covert operation that would soon be revealed as one of the greatest scandals in US History, much to the dismay and surprise of his wife, Lucy (Sara Wright Olsen). The TWA Pilot was tasked to transport contraband that would soon fund a war.

Stress Management in this Fast-Paced World

Wednesday, August 23, 2017 , 0 Comments

For the past two months, I’ve suffered from several health issues that had me reeling from too much stress, too hormonally imbalanced and exhausted to do anything else. This is also the reason why there have been so little updates from me on this blog. The health issues that I had to deal with had me drinking iron supplements just to keep up with blood loss. I have been diagnosed anemic and I had been lethargic and unable to partake in hobbies that I used to be so passionate about. Most of my hormonal imbalance had a lot to do with stress. I used to be so proud that I could handle a lot but with the stress factors I’ve had lately, I had seemingly reached my limit and my body succumbed to it. I was dealing with so much stress from my full-time job, my freelance projects, my personal life, my wedding preparations and some other transitional factors that I was having issues with. I honestly couldn’t take everything in a stride anymore. So with my health hanging in the balance, I had to make the conscious decision to stop and reassess what’s been going on in my life and here’s how I tamed stress little by little.

I Won a Coke in Can

Oh yes, here’s a little funny story. Every week, I have a project meeting way up north from the Metro. So I drive more than 40km to “enjoy” a 3 to 5 hour meeting, 30% of which has me under the scorching hot sun. This is why on this day, I usually wear a very strong sun block. While filling up at a gas station, I noticed a bit of commotion at the car driven by another girl who was also filling up her car. There were a lot of guys milling about and some were holding cameras while the guy closest to her was  holding a mike. I thought she won a prize or something. So while I was waiting for my change, I was surprised that the same guys also approached my car.

Snack on M&M’s Chocolates Now

Monday, August 14, 2017 , 0 Comments

It’s the start of another work week and while we often make it a point to be optimistic about it especially on Monday but we all are secretly counting down to the weekend. How do you de-stress? Me? I try to make time for my art, I also regularly attend movie premieres and I usually wind down at night with a good series on Netflix or a documentary on YouTube. While the buttered popcorn remains the staple and popular snack for “TV-watching” and movie related activities, why not try a bag of M&M’s instead? Now is a particularly good time because there’s an ongoing Screenbite Awards. This allows you not only to have a good snack while being entertained, you can also win a trip for two to Universal Studios Japan, a lot of M&M’s chocolates, movie tickets or exclusive M&M’s merchandise. Read on to find out how.

Scarlett in Rough Night

Tuesday, August 08, 2017 , , , 0 Comments

Yes, I'm talking about the one and only Scarlett Johansson as she takes on a comedic role, a nice break from all the badassery on-screen. In Rough Night, she's a bachelorette looking for a good time with her friends in a rented Beach house in Miami.

The Mystery that is Annabelle

Tuesday, August 08, 2017 , , 0 Comments

Remember the time when The Conjuring hit theaters and it marked a new standard in horror movies? The fact that it was based from real hauntings fueled the scare factor of that movie even more. What's memorable about that film was the brief story arc of Annabelle and I guess, that's what started it all. She was given a life of her own and her own film to boot.

Without Uber and Grab

Monday, August 07, 2017 0 Comments

For the past weeks, there have been hot discussions regarding the future of UBER and Grab Taxi in the Philippines. There have been questions over the legalities of their business models and franchise applications that had the drivers and the commuters unknowingly chosing sides. Even if I do have my own mode of transportation to get to and fro the Metro, I occasionally have to seek out Uber and Grab services.

To the Tune of the Heists in Baby Driver

Wednesday, August 02, 2017 , 0 Comments

When you’ve had a bad life and had been born into a life of crime, do you still have a shot at redemption? Baby Driver opens in theaters today, so if you need a respite from the bad weather, maybe it’s a good idea to pass sometime in the cinema instead. I had actually been waiting for the movie for a while and I was excited to see Ansel Elgort playing the partially hearing impaired car enthusiast who is a demon behind the wheel. I was pretty stoked to be able to attend the press screening.

Escape from Dunkirk

Tuesday, August 01, 2017 , 0 Comments

Ever since getting out of school and shelving my history books, my knowledge of WWII is kinda spotty. It helps that I have a fiancé who’s kind of a WWII buff and he helped fuel my interest in the historical event. I had been binge watching well-made documentaries on WWII every chance I got after watching Dunkirk. The movie was not light to watch, it was a bit stressful. I mean that not in a bad way but because while watching, I couldn’t help but remember that all these, no matter how theatrical, were based on real events and a long time ago, real people really lived through the fear, the exhaustion and the hopelessness. At the helm of Christopher Nolan, every second of the film felt like we were also there.

Not Cool, Photobucket…Not Cool

Thursday, July 27, 2017 , 0 Comments

I admit I haven’t been active from the blogosphere for quite a while but I’ve been a constant Twitter lurker and while browsing through my Twitter feed, I saw one enraged post about Photobucket’s new policy. Strange, I thought. I had been a long time of Photobucket too and in fact, that’s where most of the images on this site are hosted. So I quickly checked my inbox for all those unread Photobucket emails that I didn’t bother to open because I thought it’s just one those promotions for discounts on album printing. After a few minutes, I saw nothing unusual, just that they were making some changes on their policy and that I should watch out for their announcement. Well, the announcement was discreet. Too discreet in fact, as one user also commented, that I might have completely missed it. Anyway, the new policy change required an additional fee if I was using the site as an image host to a blog, which I unfortunately was. I have been a Plus account holder for years now and probably that’s why I didn’t notice the change. My active subscription allowed me to still host images on Photobucket without it being changed into the image below after the policy change.

Dunkirk, the next Nolan Epic

Wednesday, July 05, 2017 , , , 0 Comments

When a multi-awarded director releases a new film, one can’t help but set expectations high and when it’s a war film, expectations go even higher. I mean, there’s so many war films already right? If Christopher Nolan is at the helm, I have this feeling that this is going to be epic. Dunkirk will open in Philippine theaters on July 20th and was entirely filmed with IMAX film cameras. You know what else is special about this film? Christopher Nolan wrote the screenplay himself. Now that IS something.

Ansel Elgort Stars in Baby Driver

Wednesday, July 05, 2017 , , 0 Comments

Remember the guy who was melting hearts in The Fault in Our Stars movie who starred opposite Shailene Woodley back in 2014? Well, he’s finally back in a starring role and this time he’ll be alongside some of the big names in Hollywood. The movie, Baby Driver will open in cinemas next month here in the Philippines but if you’re following Ansel Elgort on Twitter (like I have), some countries have already been lucky enough to see the film and the response had been overwhelmingly positive. It looks like the movie will have an awesome soundtrack too.

He had been craving for Thai food for a time now and we think we’ve just found a good place to come back to. The little Thai gem that we found was a restaurant named, Thai Dara.

Villainy Runs in the Family in Despicable Me 3

Tuesday, June 13, 2017 , , , 0 Comments

Usually when we’ve come from a long weekend, coming to work the very next day is an effort all itself. However today, I have something to be excited about and that has something to do with the movie in this post. Gru (Steve Carell) is back and this time he’s joined by his twin brother, Dru. Oh yes, he has a twin brother and he’s the exact opposite in every way. The one thing that they have in common is that villainy runs in their blood which I’m soon excited to find out.

It’s the World of Wonder Woman

Thursday, June 08, 2017 , 0 Comments

The movie that’s currently crushing box office records and setting new ones is Wonder Woman. Gone were those days when the world had doubts about Gal Gadot portraying the iconic role and instead, she wowed and inspired everyone who had come to see the movie. There were some who had reservations, (mind you, these were only a few) saying they still had a different woman in mind but no one can deny just how our main girl, Gal really pulled off grace, beauty and fierceness in the film. Now she’s inspiring girls and woman all over. What an amazing feat!

A Fresher and Rowdier Baywatch

Tuesday, June 06, 2017 , 0 Comments

I donned my girl next door persona again last night as I attended the press screening for the new Baywatch movie which I had expected to be the perfect popcorn movie to turn off your brains for a while, pig out and just laugh until your bellies get a bit gassy (yes I dare say it). Nevermind that just before seeing the movie, my friends and I were talking how little positive reception it got from its opening weekend in the US, in my years as a movie blogger, I’ve learned to tune out such reviews and reserve my own opinion of the movie after I’ve seen the film. Just as I suspected, Baywatch was what it had claimed to be, nostalgic in a sense that it had some of the elements from the show but way funnier and more in your face. With Dwayne Johnson at the helm, I wouldn’t expect any less. Have I convinced you yet? Well, read on.

I was fortunate enough to visit Palawan during one of our company outings and I can attest that it is truly beautiful and magical. It is home to rich rainforests, diverse sea life, scenic diving sites and beautiful beaches. It is also just recently that I learned that Palawan plays host to pearl farming, an industry unique to our country. One of the key players in the pearl farming industry is Jewelmer.

Saying Hello to Distraction Free Driving

Thursday, May 18, 2017 , , 0 Comments

This morning I was anxiously waiting for my GrabCar driver to pick me up. I was watching the navigation map on the Grab app and I saw that he was just 5 minutes away. 10 minutes has passed and he still hasn't arrived. I kept checking his location and he was still in the same place. I was afraid that the app had frozen on me. Thankfully, he arrived just moments later. He told me just what I had suspected, his phone restarted and he couldn't get the Grab app and Waze back up again. He also told me that he had to resort to asking around for directions to where I was. I remember that was how we were back then, back when Waze wasn't such a big part of our everyday driving lives.

Excalibur, King Arthur and Charlie Hunnam

Sunday, May 14, 2017 , 0 Comments

What do we really know about the legend of King Arthur? We all know about him, the Knights of the Round Table and of course, the famous sword Excalibur. Well, let’s also not forget about Merlin. There’s also been so many movie made about him but a few days ago, I may have just seen the best adaptation and a great retelling of the legend as well. I’ve got to be honest that I didn’t expect much, except that the movie definitely had an epic feel to it based on the trailers alone. I wasn’t prepared to be blown away but oh man, Guy Ritchie made something amazing here and it was just incredibly impressive.

Modern Re-telling of King Arthur Coming Up

Wednesday, May 03, 2017 , , 0 Comments

We’re all familiar with the tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table right? In this new version of the tale, King Arthur is given a modern and grittier edge through the spectacular direction of Guy Ritchie and the led by Charlie Hunnam in the titular role. Instead of being a royal, King Arthur is a common ruffian who runs a gang in the alleys of Londonium and will soon be made aware of the destiny that lies before him.

Summer Thunderstorms, the CA and the Proper Decorum

Transformers: The Last Knight Sneak Peek

Friday, April 07, 2017 , , 0 Comments

We were given a special treat last night at the special IMAX theater screening for the 20-minute preview of the movie, Transformers: The Last Knight. To be honest, I really didn’t like the fourth film, Transformers: Age of Extinction because it was too tiring and the girl character there was extremely annoying. So, I tried my best to be more open-minded with this film and maybe, Michael Bay will have the chance to redeem himself. Before the preview, there was around 4-minutes where Michael showed some behind the scenes work for the movie and how it was him who made a special rig to shoot the movie wholly using IMAX cameras and in 3D. I must admit that it would be interesting to see the final cut and see all the hardwork of the technical team.

All Set for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2

Thursday, April 06, 2017 , , 0 Comments

The thing that made everybody take immediate notice when the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie came out was it’s soundtrack. It was filled with well-loved 80’s music that just tickled everyone’s nostalgic mood. When it was received very well in the cinemas, now everyone can’t wait what the second movie will bring.

In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, events in the movie will unfold to the tunes of the highly anticipated Awesome Mixtape #2. The team is now enjoying their share of the spotlight after the events in Xandar. Rightfully so, they’re now tasked in patrolling and protecting the universe.

Red Talks with Daphne

Friday, March 31, 2017 0 Comments

Last week, I was fortunate enough to be invited to the launch of Red Talks with Daphne, a new project done in partnership with AirAsia. As you all know, AirAsia is responsible for bringing the concept of affordable travel to the ever growing tourism market in Asia. The event was hosted by Gino Quillamor of Monster Radio RX 93.1 and of course Ms. Daphne Osena-Paez.
