Don Chaka: Patapon 2

By Cher Cabula-Mendoza - Sunday, May 03, 2009

Finally I've finished this game on the PSP and it's high time to make a review. Don Chaka: Patapon 2 is the sequel to the hit game Patapon. I was instantly hooked even when the first game came out. You can even find me tapping my feet to the beats as I plough my way through bosses.

Game Overview

It's a rhythm-based game based on the premise that you play a "God" leading an army of Patapons by commanding them with a series of drumbeats through to a magical place called Earthend.

These drums generate the PON, PATA, DON, CHAKA. When combined to create different beats, you can command your army to:

PATA-PATA-PATA-PON (advance, walk)

PON-PATA-PON-PATA (run away, dodge)

PATA-PON-DON-CHAKA (recover from status ailments)

drums TIP: You have to learn these beats before you can actually do them in the game, as the game progresses and as the need arises, you are presented with tutorials in learning new beats.

One of the new additions to the sequel is the Hero. You get only one hero throughout the entire game and he will lead your Patapons to victory. You can change the classes and levels of your hero depending on the mission and he can go into fever mode when you are pitted with a very difficult boss. Each class has its own fever mode for you hero. My favorite is the Dekapon fever mode because it deals the most damage.

Your hero also is the one unit you can play in the multiplayer mode. Each monster boss you defeat drops an egg. These are the eggs that you need for playing the adhoc mode with other players. The eggs represent the monsters and missions that you can level up in the multiplayer mode.

One other new thing is the evolution tree. You can now evolve your units up to level 10 or into Rarepon units. Mind you, levelling them up to being a Rarepon is really hard. I only levelled up two. The evolution tree has descriptions per unit, so it's really up to you to decide which character trait you're going to focus on.

patapon2 Like the first game, there are also mini-games within Patapolis (the main city of your Patapons), playing them can give you important ingredients that you will need in the Tree of Life for the evolution of your Patapons.

patapon3 meden_tree Unlike the first game though, you can now replay several missions fighting Karmens. You are unable to do so in the first game with the Zigotons. Playing these missions, will give you weapon and armor drops, enough to equip your patapons with high class weapons and armors.
