Snooze Fest

By Cher Cabula-Mendoza - Saturday, May 09, 2009

Everyone's got a very busy schedule and sometimes (well mostly in my case) work demands that we work very late hours. Sleep can quickly become a luxury. Sometimes it would be a miracle to get 8 hours of sleep. Here are some tips to set the mood for sleeping:

  • Listen to some chillout, instrumental or downtempo mood music before hit the sack. Studies show that music with a tempo of 60 to 80 beats per minute (this is actually close to your heart rate), makes you feel more relaxed.   chillout
  • Buy a new mattress. Sweat, bacteria and dust mites tend to collect deep between the recesses of the mattress foam, you should replace it every 5 to 10 years. mattress
  • Get an amber clock. Studies have shown blue-lit clocks hinder the production of melatonin, the hormone needed to cause drowsiness.

  • Lower the room temperature. The colder it gets, the more you signal your body that it's time to hit the sheets.thermostat
  • Get a whiff of lavender. Researchers at Wesleyan University monitored patients' sleep cycles and found that a whiff of lavender before bed helped them doze more deeply. The scent seems to increase the amount of restorative sleep during each slumber cycle. For better sack time, spritz your pillowcase with a lavender-scented spray.lavender
  • Drown out unwanted noise. You can filter these sounds by putting on nature sounds instead, like the rushing water of a waterfall or the soft murmur of a stream. Your brain will be used to the repetition and it won't keep you awake.brook
  • Give your pet a nice place to sleep. Pets can keep you awake when they become restless at night. Keep him comfortable and reward him a treat.asleep pup
    See you all in dreamland!

  1. Hi Cher! These are wonderful suggestions. I just found some lavender oil, I think I want to try this trick tonight.
Thank you for the Mother's Day greetings.
