The Women of Ocean’s 8

By Cher Cabula-Mendoza - Monday, June 11, 2018

These days, women are proving time and again that they can be just as fierce (sometimes more) and just as strong as the men are. In Ocean’s 8, it shows how women can do a heist with much flair and style. Following in the spirit of the previous three Ocean’s films, Ocean’s 8 brings its charm to the bring screen using a winning formula of a diverse heist team and a clever heist. Also, if you’ve heard the saying…Hell hath no fury…well that applies in this movie too.

Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock) just got out on parole after spending 5 years in prison for art fraud. In the entire time of her stay, she planned an ambitious heist involving the theft of a $150million worth diamond encrusted Cartier necklace. One that would be worn at the Met gala by Daphne Kluger (Anne Hathaway). The heist has been perfected through the years with her long-time partner, Lou (Cate Blanchett). Employing other women with unique skill sets gave them further advantage.

All Ocean’s films are notorious for their plot twists and unknown heist players. You’ll be glad to know that this movie is no exception. Although this is the case, it is by no means boring. The women chosen to play the key roles are so diverse and so skilled in acting that they cleverly distracted the audience about the heist.

I love that the film is obviously aimed for a female audience. I gladly pointed this out to my husband, who is a HUGE fan of the previous Ocean’s films. Ocean’s 8 features jewels, great fashion and strong women. In fact, if we had been served martinis during the premiere, it would have been perfect. There are so many celebrity cameos as well. It was really so much fun.

As with any heist film, the fun usually starts the moment the recruitment phase starts. This is where we get insider info of the heist plan and we see the specific skills sets of each team member. I think at this point, we get to choose our favorites. In Ocean’s 8, mine was Lou. Cate Blanchett was classy, cool and kickass at the same time.

The women have done it. They’ve opened a new chapter in the Ocean’s films. In fact, audiences were speculating whether there will be an Ocean’s 9 and an Ocean’s 10 in the future. I wouldn’t mind though because they’ve got this down pat and it was pretty entertaining. The key to enjoying these kind of movies is not to guess what happens next. Just watch and enjoy the ride. Ocean’s 8 opens in theaters on June 13.
